(1181) Challenge: Devious Crossways Pin

Scott sent this challenge lock, which contained a devious crossways pin. I finally got it picked and gutted...
In this video I take on a hand-built challenge lock designed to defeat picking attempts.
Whipped videos highlight custom made locks sent to the LockLab as a challenge. They contain innovative modifications, unique security designs, and careful craftsmanship. Challenge lock design is difficult, to say the least, but many LockSporters excel in lock design and hand craftsmanship. Because there is such innovation among LockSporters, many manufacturers pay attention to the WHIPPED videos and incorporate the security techniques into their own locks.
There is only ONE RULE: The key must work. You are free to cover up the key to prevent me from seeing it until after I successfully pick (or fail to pick) the lock. I will make THREE 10-minute attempts (down from six 10-minute attempts in April 2018). If I fail to open it in that time, it will become a WHIPPED video. If you are interested in sending a challenge lock, please use this address:

bill, your camera is trying to focus on the green mat because of all the lines, try laying a dark colored material down before disassembling the lock. as a bonus the material will keep loose pins from bouncing as much when they fall and the dark material will make everything easier to see.

The spring in #2 looks like a spring from a lighter. That flat piece in it could've been what held the flint in position.

Congratulations Bill for picking that ingenious design. That rubber "Spring" worked pretty well but I'm sure that's the weakness in the design. Awesome design Scott.. Patient It.

Buy a starter kit and a couple locks for cheap. It's very easy to get into, and very hard to master, which makes it a fun hobby. Bill has some videos recommending various products for beginners.

The man thinks like a magician. All the fancy security pins were just misdirection to keep you from figuring out the secret locking pin in the back. If it had just been the standard factory pins it would have been obvious from the start there was something alien about the lock.

Chamber 4. The pin was magnetic. The lower T pin was iron/steel. They would have tried to stay together inside of both outer/drilled drivers.

Did you try to stack the pins from chamber 2 into the core to see? If that driver is long enough it isn't necessarily going to make a second sheer line.

Luka, sorry for the delayed response but I wasn't notified of this message and just stumbled across it. If it was in the original package I probably just repackaged it and sent it to a new picker. I sincerely HOPE it was repinned with something so crazy that we discouraged a new picker....🙄

Would the addition of a metal slot on the outside of the lock inline with the keyway, say half an inch long foil picking? I see you with picks coming out the keyway at extreme angles to try to get the pins to move. A short metal slot would block this action for very little money and add extra pick protection?

I’ve made a lock id like to send you it’s got great potential it’s a 10 pin but! It’s not like ive ever seen before it’s homemade and I want to send it in as a challenge lock what are the rules for the challenge locks? It has a working key it’s pickable but not normal. I also would like it back but it would be great with some alien tech. I would pay for shipping for it to come back to me.
