Yanoko Elementary School (矢ノ川小学校), located in Kumano City (熊野市), Mie Prefecture (三重県), was established in 1875, although the existing L-shaped one-storey building wasn’t completed until 1959. Most of its students were children from families doing work related to a mine nearby. The closure of the mine in 1978 meant the relocation of many of the families so that by 1988 the school also closed its doors. Although a swimming pool built in 1965 has now been backfilled with dirt, the rest of the site remains, in a clearly decaying state, as it was at the time of completion in 1959.
