11-year-old handcuffed at Texas middle school

An 11-year-old girl was handcuffed and taken into custody after a false fire alarm call at a Texas middle school. Her parents say their daughter is innocent and that law enforcement went too far. Authorities say, because the girl is older than 10, they followed policy by arresting and handcuffing her.

Look, when someone pulls a fire alarm, it dispatches fire trucks filled with firemen whose job it is to put out fires. Police are also dispatched to help with evacuation and safety. It takes at least 2 hrs. minimum to clear a false call along with disrupting the school, classes, teachers, and the students' learning period. It is not a simple matter. Now, if a true fire call has come through while this "false alarm" is taken care of, the nearrest fire station is busy with a false alarm, then they must dispatch fire station personal from the next nearest fire station that may be 5-10 further away. This is when minutes count the most!! Lives are put in jeopardy all because an 11 year old girl who should have known better than to pull a fire alarm in the first place. Talking with her, it's obvious she doesn't think she did anything wrong and, eye 🙄rolling, sarcastic, "Oh, dear!! Her poor parents didn't know where she was!" obviously parroting what she heard her parents must have repeatedly said! The judge should order her to visit a burn unit in the nearest hospital and talk with burn patients on how important it was to have the fire department get to where they were trapped and saved their lives. This isn't a simple matter. All the kids should be taught fire safety along with the consequences of their actions and how it her actions affects others!!❤❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤❤😇

It's very easy to state your concern, yet we truly do not know what was happening at the time they put the hand cuffs on her. What did she say and/or do that made the cops feel it was necessary? As a former dispatcher, I believe that the parents should have been notified, but fully agree with her being charged. The effort that goes into a fire alarm at a school is pretty extensive. Often we would receive assistance from out of town agencies, and if they weren’t available we would have to replace that equipment. If police didn’t automatically respond, and the FD arrived to find a false alarm with a suspect, they requested police for an arrest. This did deplete our resources, and often we had to have other departments take true emergency calls due to a child’s prank. The parents were often charged the fee for our response, which could be from $500-1,000. If she wasn’t aware that pulling a fake fire alarm was wrong, let alone a crime by 11, then there is something else wrong. I know everyone is going to come back at me saying I’m heartless, or what about the congressman. However, we all know that there’s a different set of rules for those in politics, and I’m not saying that it’s right. I have sat on the other side, sending the help, and scrambling for units for a real emergency. You don’t want yourself, or loved ones to be in that window of uncertainty when a child old enough to know better decides to play a very dangerous game. Do I think that she learned her lesson? I’m not completely convinced…

Her parents should be billed for their daughter's immaturity and recklessness. I believe that sending out a firetruck costs thousands. What if someone else were trapped in a burning car after an accident, or were in some other dire emergency, and this firetruck and crew were unavailable for the real emergency, owing to-this false alarm? And I'm sure that the police called the parents as soon as their daughter was processed at the police station. I feel sure that this non-notification business is over-blown. She should be convicted of making a false statement to emergency workers, and sentenced to community service.

I firmly believe that children should be punished and educated after doing something like this due to the diversion of resources that could cost someone their life but at the same time this is a bit much. I’m not a firefighter but I’m an EMT and 80% of things we respond to are bs and I regularly see critical calls go out while the truck covering that area is tending to a bs call for toe pain and it somewhat regularly causes that person their life since the next closest available unit may be 15-20 minutes away. Think twice before calling 911 for bs because you may be utilizing resources that may be needed by a critically sick or injured person or in this case FD resources.

It should be the police you are mad at right? As for the comment about fire fighters sitting around doing nothing...maybe the might at certain times but that is besides the point, as a call distracting their attention to something as vital as a school on fire in school time, but there could have been a fire somewhere else that people died in because of lack of man power. Wow…must have been pretty inconvenient. Almost like how you inconvenienced dozens of emergency personnel, the drivers who had to get out of the way for the emergency vehicles with lights and sirens on, the taxpayers who burdened the cost for that, and all the people who actually needed help that had to wait for the emergency personnel to respond to your call before heading to an actual emergency. Could have cost people their life, both with delayed emergency services, and the risk of collisions due to emergency vehicles speeding to the school through intersections and red lights and causing all other drivers on the road to get out of the way for them thinking there was a real emergency. How inconvenient….
