Thrilling seeing him play live for free at the festival near my home in the city. Dude was the baddest keyboard player ever!! Imagine at 11 years old doing the organ like he did...church kids learn early. I love the Hammond B3 and C3 series to this day. Funky organ with a unique sound with the Leslie speakers. Hammond sued Leslie for making it I found out, but it made the organ sound so much richer with the rotating cone design. Poor Hammond was a clock maker before the organ idea came to be. Legendary now...mostly in Black Churches all over town I notice. Thanks for the upload...

@@matrox Well actually, the irony, even among the older generations is that, before he became an iconic singing legend, Nat "King" Cole was a prodigy himself, and a premier, award winning jazz pianist, with the King Cole Trio. His playing style helped forge the beginnings of the "Bebop" style of jazz music. Nat was a technical genius on the piano keyboard. He was also a gifted songwriter, arranger, and composer As the 1950s approached, Nat was encouraged to sing more, and eventually stand up st the microphone to croon love ballads. So, actually, there were two career phases of Mr. Cole. However, his popularity as a balladeer overshadowed his jazz musician background. Even Nat admitted that he missed being exclusive at the piano. With the arrival of new, upcoming piano virtuosos like Oscar Peterson, and Errol Garner on the scene, Nat decided to return to his roots, and record a couple piano albums himself. Despite the urban legend that Nat King Cole never sang, until a drunk club patron demanded that he sing "Sweet Lorraine" is just not true. Nat always sang with the trio, upon occasion. However, he had yet to develop into the vocal powerhouse, and icon that he would become years later. Check it Out! Ciao!!!

Wow!! What a special archived moment in history. The great Nate King Cole alongside that beast of that little organ player and singer. Which that little organ player and singer went on in life to become a world wideLegend Mr. Billy Preston which Preston had suffered kidney disease in his later years, brought on by his hypertension. He received a kidney transplant in 2002, but his health continued to deteriorate. He had voluntarily entered a drug rehabilitation clinic in Malibu, California, at the suggestion of guitarist Is'real Benton, and suffered pericarditis there, leading to respiratory failure that left him in a coma from November 21, 2005.[1] Preston died on June 6, 2006, in Scottsdale, Arizona. Salute to the late great Billy Preston I was recently introduced to his music and I found one of the best remixes Billy recreated. A song entitled Change is gonna come. He has one of the best covers of Change Gonna Come.

Had no idea BP was a child prodigy. I didn’t realize that he was so young when he met the Beatles in Hamburg either. That was in 1962, so only 5 years after this clip. He was playing with Little Richard at age 16 then. What a career, too bad he didn’t live to be at his HOF induction.

How am I just seeing this for the first time? I love coming across things like this. They were two amazing talents. If all you know is Nat King Cole's later stuff, I highly recommend checking out his earlier stuff he recorded with The Nat King Cole Trio. It's definitely some of the coolest music of the era.

I was fifteen and met Billy the next year, in 1958, when I joined the Sky Pilot choir. He taught me what rhythm really was and last year, I learned to spell it. We had Ethel Waters and Little Richard visit as guests, during the run, and when I left for the Army, in "63, Billy went to England, to join the Beatles as their pianist, when they hit the road. In "64, in Germany, I heard the Beatles, for the first time on the radio, in a bar. I asked what the hell THAT was and a girl said, "They're the Beatles!" I heard their falsetto squealing quartet and wanted to throw the radio out the window. After I was discharged I had a chance to see Ray Charles. I purchased one of his LP's on the base in Germany, in "65 and it was great, so I wanted to see him in person. To my surprise, Billy was his opening act and he started with playing some Beethoven, on the piano, morphing into a contemporary ballad. I had a chance to chit chat, with Billy, during an intermission. That was the last time I saw him. I heard he died of complications, due to high blood pressure, while I was sitting in front of the cure.

I often debate in my mind the 20th century's greatest and the typical names run thru my head, Sanatra, Elvis, MJ, even Ray Charles, but how could Nat King Cole not be the 1? Always loved Billy Preston (Will it go Round in Circles, Out-a-space You Are so Beautiful). Glad l was born in the early 60s!

Shortly after this video short film with Nat King Cole and Billy Preston was made, Billy was cast as W.C. Handy as a child in the wonderful and moving motion picture "St. Louis Blues" (1958), where Nat played the fully grown W. C. Handy. If you've never seen this movie, I strongly recommend it. The cast is simply incredible and so is just about everything else in it. You can see it for free on KZread currently, here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/laqHt6uKqbGpcrg.html.

Nat King Cole Truly Was A Real For Real Hunam Being. He Never Ever tried to hog a performance or a title or a place/spotlight! He truly was confident with his talent and Was Just Who He Was; And Comfortable With Being Himself! He had nothing to prove or exploit or take that wasn’t his to have. What a Remarkable Role Model!!
