Robert Conrad was a great person in real life also. I spoke with him twice, he treated me great, like he treated everyone. He did more different things in show business, then anyone else has. And he did them all with near perfection. What a great person he was.

Ross Martin's real name was Martin Rossenblat whose family moved to America from Poland when he was just a baby. Spoke seven languages; four of which he learned before the age of five. Graduated from law school and was a multitalented musician playing the violin, piano, drums, guitar and even the flute to which four of them you can see him playing in the series. AND he was a painter. Just needed to add a twelfth to your list. xoxo

COVID IS A CONFIRMED SCAM I agree. They didn’t get the point of the show. Much the same as the Avengers film (not the Marvel franchise) with Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman. They did not understand the quirky sixties take on the spy thriller genre. A bit sardonic and a bit comedic. So both were great in their own rights but the remakes couldn’t “remake” the quirky sixties atmosphere that made these two series’ a success. The remakes were far too heavy handed and lacking in ... a sixties somethin’ which is hard to define.

@@dougs3196 ......they made the movie too corny, horny, and casting Will Smith was a horrible choice.....Smith should have starred in The Matrix instead as he was originally considered. Mark Wahlberg would have been a better choice for Wild, Wild West. Robert Conrad would have had a cameo in the film probably.

@@dougs3196 That type of casting is shameful, it's like a hand me down to black actors, given them already established characters instead creating a new character around the actor's popularity, like they were talking about Idris Alba being James Bond? really? and Will Smith can take some of the blame too, jumping on the well known title instead of taking a chance on an unknown title (at the time) the Matrix

Conrad’s outfits on the show were perfect .

The fight sequences on this show in every episode,were spectacular. As good as anything in the James Bond movies,at the time.

Even though he was a Secret Service agent, Jim West is still the best cowboy of all time

One of the best TV shows ever! I was knee-high to a married grasshopper and my older brother and I were enthralled! Also: Ross Martin, so fully talented, would sketch what he thought the character he'd pretend in make up should look like, give it to the make up chief/crew, and they made that the look for Gordon's "impersonation." Miguelito Loveless was one of the greatest villains ever! So ruthless and yet so cultured and he genuinely adored and respected children. (A very interesting and complex character.) An amazing program! I'm proud to have the complete series on DVD!

I can't imagine being a kid without this show. thank you for these interesting backstories.

It was ridiculous that the network bowed to the public perception, that it was too violent...it's BEYOND CLEAR that its pretend violence.

My favorite part was the Story Boarding when the show went to a commercial - don't know why, but I thought that was the neatest thing.

Conrad played himself, essentially, as he played his public persona, in a 1969 Mannix episode, "The Playground." That his actual reputation among the studio stuntmen, gaffes, grips, and prop men was beyond reproach made the episode truly remarkable. Conrad trained under the boxing legend Willie Pep which is why his fight scenes outclassed all others on 1960's TV shows.

If this is true it explains the uncanny moves Conrad made--even though they were stunts, there was something otherworldly about many of them--those strange ducks which seemed to sometimes catch even the stuntmen off guard.

Here's another factoid worth mentioning. Conrad's real life father, Leonard Falk, played the part of a mute asylum orderly in one of the best written episodes of the series, "The Night of the the Murderous Spring" with the irreplaceable Michael Dunn reprising his role as Doctor Loveless.

Man from Uncle, Wild Wild West and the Monkees. Quite the TV lineup when I was 12 or 14.

I always, ALWAYS loved the show. Although Robert Conrad was incredibly handsome, my heart always belonged to the amazing Ross Martin.

This was one of my favorite shows.

I always thought Conrad exemplified a man's man.

My family never missed an episode of this show. It was so well done.

Those blue eyes are captivating.

One of my favorite shows. I have to admit Ross Martin as Artemis Gordon was my favorite character. All those disgues were great. However, it was the way he would invent new devices that got me hooked.

Among other amazing shows of the era, I was born in 1965 and the wild wild West was already on television. I watched it until I was four years old and then it went into reruns. It was always one of my favorite shows and Robert Conrad has always been one of my favorite actors. It’s a shame that Ross Martin passed away so early in life. But I loved both of their performances in episodes of Columbo.

1965 was a Great tv season. Not only did The Wild Wild West premiere this year but also the following tv shows: Hogan's Heroes, Green Acres, I dream of Jeannie, Get Smart, Lost in Space and Atom Ant !!

I remember watching the wild wild west show in the late 60's & into the 70's. It was my favorite show back then, I could hardly wait to get home from school and watch the Wild Wild

Ross Martin was considered at that time the most intelligent actor , he had been an atty., for the DA in California before he decided to be an actor, also spoke 6 languages ( Like Kirk Douglas ), follow by Jack Lord of " Hawaii 5-0 " , who had a degree in civil engineering. I had the honor and pleasure of knowing " Uncle " Bob , as those close to him called Robert Conrad and his fans. He got me into the Hollywood stuntmen association in the late 70's straight out of the Marines , besides me , he helped many other aspiring actors and actresses , " Uncle " Bob , may you rest in peace.

Ross Martin's character Artemis Gordon has aged very well while Robert Conrad's James West seems very wooden now, Ross's acting ability is highlighted by the different characters he played while in disguise, which carried those episodes, he seemed really good playing a chef of any ethnicity, Ross Martin had a great guest starring role on an episode of Bonanza, his intellect and range always shines through his characters

the wild west was one of my favrouite shows

As a baby boomer this was my favorite show. Always enjoyed the fight scenes, the beautiful women and Ross Martin’s disguises. With his fighting skill I would have liked to see Conrad in Enter The Dragon, no offense to John Saxon.

Yes that would have been great to see Bob Conrad in Enter the Dragon instead of John Saxon RIP to both of them but I hated what happened to Our late great Elder Jim Kelly in that movie though!

Conrad was one of the most perfect looking men I have ever seen, bar none. He was absolutely drop dead elegant.

Two additional facts, 1. Legend has it since William Shatner was also considered short, wikipedia lists him as 5ft. 10, they also only cast short actresses to pay against him on the show so we see a lot of the same actresses on both shows. 2. Only my opinion but I often thought that The Wild Wild West was the inspiration for Steam Punk, since many pf the "Mad Scientist" devices on the show often mixed 19th Century designs with modern techbology.

I started watching in 1965. i haven't stopped watching. It's that good.

This vintage tv spy show never grows old.

I never watched this show very often but I remember hearing about it. I think either my parents had watched it or my grandparents. I never really got into Westerns until I was in my 30’s. But I do appreciate all the different shows that you cover on your channel. Thank you! 👍

During the early 80's, this show was second only to Star Trek in syndication. It was on every weekday afternoon at 6pm in my area. I watched it constantly instead of news. They could, and should make TV shows this good once again, but maybe nobody has the talent any longer.

"The Night of the Burning Diamond" one of my favorite. A perfect mix of a western meets James Bond, meets science fiction.

Really liked this program!

I loved the show and still do. Especially the Gothic spooky episodes. I loved it when he would have to fight some giant guy “Richard Kiel” or some robotic Superman. I always said that Robert Conrad was the coolest guy even when he got his butt kicked. Other than Bruce Lee he performed basic Karate flawlessly in the series. He was a true inspiration for getting into good physical shape.

The theme song was stuck in my head today, and I probably haven't heard it in 30 years. Weird how the brain works...

Great video, I grew up in the '60s, "The Wild Wild West" was one of my favorite shows, and ya "Man From Uncle", "Mission Impossible", and "Get Smart" was too. I also loved Westerns, like "High Chaparral" and "F-Troop". I like your content and I am now a subscriber.

Red West, who played Sgt. Micklin on Black sheep, was a stuntman for this show also.

This show was a classic ... did Conrad have it written into his contract that he not only would do his own stunts, he would appear shirtless within the first 11 minutes of every episode? And be kissing a beautiful actress at some time during each episode as well. Well done, Robert. One of the all time great theme songs too.

You might want to include that they changed the opening credits - from tipping his hat and brushing off the showgirl that tries to stab him as he goes in for a kiss, in the first season, to knocking the girl down with a right cross in all subsequent seasons.

Born in 1953 this was one of my favorite westerns and enjoyed how they travelled by train to most venues. It was unique as is noted was they were agents working directly for President Grant during a time just after the Civil War. Actually having the name Loveless at times I would be asked if I was any relation to Dr. Loveless.

I loved this show as a child in the 60's. Everyone boy I knew wanted to be James West. He beat up everybody and got all the women. We were just too immature to appreciate the talents of Artemus Gordon.

Since you stated one fact TWICE (The TV moving in 79 and 80) here's another: according to Conrad the same stuntmen were used in scenes where West was battling a crowd. They just changed their wardrobe.

Gotta respect how the runners of the show were never willing to recast the actors when they had to take time away, and wouldn't continue the movies with one of the stars dead. You don't see that kind of loyalty to the actors today, in the remake/reboot/recast happy environment Hollywood is in.

Loved this show in my teen years.

I've become a big fan of the WW. I was born in 79, so i missed the show in its original run. I ended up gettting the full series on DvD. The Dr. Loveless episodes are my favorite.

Conrad not only had Batteries on his shoulder but a chip..( he was famous for TV Commercials for a Battery Company on his shoulder).. He was always wanting to prove he was better than the next man or that is what the public was lead to believe!!!!!!!

When I started just recently watching the show again then I was trying to remember how long it might have been since I had seen it. I'm enjoying watching it every week on Metv just like they are all new episodes.

It just goes to show you that the movie remake was not done right

I was glad to learn Robert Conrad didn't like the Will Smith movie version on the show. Because, neither did I. Some classics you just don't mess with.

I love this show!!! It was a brilliant action and fun fantasy show!

Us too! What episode appealed to you the most?

You forgot to mention a few items. 1) Conrad wore lifts to make him 5'10". 2) Ross Martin's native language was not English. Martin, who immigrated to America from Poland when a child, spoke Polish, Yiddish and some Russian before learning English and later added French, Spanish and Italian to his repertoire. 3) The train steam engine was numbered "8" to make it easier to use reverse shots as stock footage in future episodes of the series- a trick that has been used more than once as "movie magic". The train was also shot with special filters on the camera lenses to simulate night for various scenes to be used in later episodes. 4) The train moving was shot on Sante Fe's San Jacinto branch near Menifee, California. Filming took place between June and August of 1965. Then they used the many train shots over the years...but again, the shots of the train moving were all done the summer of 1965. 5) After Conrad hurt his head CBS requested that Conrad stop doing his own stunts. Conrad said "No, not as long as I'm James West." 6) You state the show was canceled due to "violence"...not true...the show was canceled due to rising production costs, including Conrad wanting more money per episode. Paying Conrad more coupled with the increased production costs killed the show.

I never heard that it was taken off the air because of violence. I remember that one advocacy group against violence in TV programs in the 1970s considered Hawaii 5-0 one of most violent shows counting the number of violent incidents on each show and CBS never took it off the air.

Both Wild Wild West and Baa Baa Black Sheep were taken off the air for violence, due to pressure from the same group.

Ross Martin wasn't the only actor on the show with hidden talents, Michael Dunn who played Dr Loveless numerous times could read before many children of that age knew there alphabet and scored in the 99th percentile on a college entrance test though he left after just two years as a sophmore. Quite popular during that period a friend held had a student fundraiser so they could buy him a used car outfitted with hand controls so he could get around on his own. He would often write letters or visit children with his condition to tell them that the only limitation were ones they not others gave them and would often let their parents know that they weren't doing them favors like protecting to much since kids should be kids. Indeed he acted almost until the very day he died and was in Britain doing a film when he passed away at a hotel and lived up to his motto jump with both feet first into what you're doing in his far to brief a life. Ross Martin's absense was explained by having Artemus Gordon on an assignment elsewhere and in a wax recording sent to West heard on how it was going in Washington DC and as it ended a giggling female companion was offering him more champagne. I thought Michael Dunn was amazing. I love watching reruns of him and Phoebe Dorin singing together - their harmonies were beautiful

Dunn also fell from the second story and hurt himself. He continued with filming. This is why he is in a wheelchair and wagon in the episode that also had Robert Conrad's real father in it. Dunn and Dorin had a singing act prior to Wild Wild West. They incorporated the act into the show.

had to watch this every friday night, before i went out with my girl friend..the way he walked was too cool...

Any t v show could possibly be made in a good or great film , unfortunately, it reality happens, the fugitive was an exception, but to have will Smith to replace bob conrad was such( nothing against Smith personally)a terrible idea even if he was doing well at the time. The character of west that Robert created was truly special. And there is only one ross Martin.
