There was a reason for it to be that size. We reverse engineered the dish as it got smaller over the three years of the tv show, and our film was taking place 15 years before the series, we felt it would be a sign that the technology was getting better over time.

@@camerafx24 you are correct, it is indeed an adapter, but it has glass optics within to bring focus very close to the lens (35mm nikon) it then i assume collimates the image to focus on the gate. I believe it was made for the motion picture then use subsequently for Bladerunner and all of Trumbulls films up untill Boss film took at and make some mods. it also has the mirror attachment to make those impossible shots perpendicular to the focal plane.

If you watch the film on KZread, you’ll understand why the dishes that big. The cage episode the dish was one size later in the original series. It became even smaller so we figured the technology was getting better and better and since ours took place 15 years previous we made our dish large. It was simply an artistic choice within the confines of the story.

First, thank you for the complement. Unfortunately for me, this is the question I have had to answer over and over. In the original series they made the dish a certain size. When they did the first season they changed certain things on the ship including making the dish even smaller. The Director of STAR TREK FIRST FRONTEAR had me make the dish bigger than it was in the Cage pilot so that it would appear that the technology had slowly progressed as ours was 15 years before the Kirk missions. I hope this explains it for you. 😀

Why can't the studios use real models again? Real is real. Most current ships look faker than a $3 bill. Perfect example is when Discovery crash lands on that planet after jumping forward in time. When it tries to escape the ship shots were horrid. Looked like Saturday morning cartoon animation. Holy crap, can you image the 1701-F reveal in Picard season 3 if it had been an 11 foot physical model. WOW! They would only have to build it once and reuse it over and over.
