11-Day Wilderness Trout Fishing Trip | Solo Camping & Canoeing

A trip that started ugly then got beautiful. Challenging travel up the West Aubinadong River past Megisan Lake. 10 nights, 38 portages (much to my surprise), and countless trout. One of the best trips of my life.
This route is typically known as the Ranger Lake loop and travels up into Algoma Headwaters Provincial Park.

I made a simple map for this trip. If you want to follow along or to consider paddling this route, the map is available here for free: www.dropbox.com/sh/ecs0amwrcmabtob/AAC7_xu0VCxdgb6Z18ztAVnEa?dl=0 It's geo-referenced and will show your position on the map in an app like Avenza Maps. This is a re-release of the 2018 Algoma Headwaters videos series. I wanted to re-release it for a few reasons: (1) looking back, I wasn't satisfied with the original edit and I liked the idea of making it a long format video, (2) this was one of the best trips of my life and I enjoy sharing it, and (3) because this is a great time to be thinking about ice-out trout trips :)

Blue Barron When I heard “I’m stuck”, & saw the street tires on his rig, the exact same thought screamed thru my little toy brain!😂. Lifted rig, stock rig, they’re all only as good as their TIRES! Like his, my rig spends more time as a Grocery Getter than off reading these days, BUT, when we fish the Great North Woods in MAY, I worry less than most. The last 4 sets of tires I’ve put on my rigs are BF Goodrich KO2’s & I won’t run with less! When I get teased about “Geeze, Jim. Those tires aggressive enough for ya’?!?” I look ‘em in the eye & say “You know those days when you get 18” of snow, & you don’t want to take your truck out?” They always say “YEP.” I say “With those tires, I don’t have those days.” Mic drop.

Hahah usually every 3-4 days. Often I feel like I just don't have time, and also want to eat my packed food to lighten my food bag. You might say "just pack less food" but with wilderness tripping that's a very risky play. I'm a pretty confident angler, but sometimes it just doesn't happen. Would hate to cut a trip short because I'm running out of food :)

We re-watched this video again tonight when there wasn't anything else of interest to watch. It turned into a beautiful trip, in spite of the wicked start with one problem after another. Thank you for pushing on. It was worth it. One thing that really stood out was the change in your methods between then and now. For instance, picking up a fish, you used dry hands. These days you make a point of wetting them. When holding the poor fish, your grip was so tight I could see your fingers sinking in and the poor fish was burping like crazy. Also, you left two to three hooks on your lures, but recently you taught Xander the benefit of removing all but one hook. Practice makes perfect. Way to go Jon. Keep it up

Hahah you rock Brian, thank you so very much. This was truly a dream trip...may never get a spring trip like it again. 10 nights, incredible fishing, and perfect weather the whole time except for one afternoon which happened to be when I opted for a rest day...that just doesn't happen.

I love your style of film making and the raw style of shooting that is so refreshing. Capturing and editing conversations is tricky but you do it well. I don’t think you need to narrate (vlogger style) as often as you do. You can let the long and slow cuts take over the story line progression.

Nice haul! I did this trip many years ago and looped back through the Nushatogaini River. Being mid summer we had low water levels and the slog through the Nush was tough, but we made it and had a great time. It was also on this trip I saw my first northern lights. Brought back good memories, although some things looked different and others the still the same. Cool trip!

Aw man that's the dream to get the lights on a trip like this. I had high hopes for my first night on Megisan, like I have on many other trips. Still never had an overhead show. Would love to go back and do the Nush someday :)

Another nice video production of some great looking back-country Jon! That run of waterfalls you found at the north end of Torrence (sp?) Lake was such a gem. I can't imagine coming upon that in real life, all alone to enjoy first hand. I am not a big angler but I really enjoyed seeing the Lake and Brook Trout you were catching, the varied colours and cool one- offs like that big dark trout. Anyway, thanks for making the effort to film this as I know it can't be easy. Keep adventuring!

That looked like a tough start to your trip... I've never had any great urge to travel to Canada like I've had for other countries in the world, however after watching and enjoying many of your canoe trip films my urges to experience your beautiful country are growing stronger. To be alone in that wilderness must be amazing, no crowds, day trippers, dumb ass tourists taking selfies, you are truly spoilt for open country in Canada, good work, keep it up. Greetings from England.

Thanks a lot Andy! If you ever make it, give yourself lots of time so you can be sure to get away from whatever sprawling metropolis you fly into...sometimes you've got to drive half a day to get away from it all (e.g. Toronto). You start to get natural an hour north of Toronto, for instance, but the real sense of wilderness takes a bit of time to reach. Once you're in the north, there are endless wilderness tripping possibilities :)
