#11 Building Our Homestead Dream From Scratch: 2 Year Off-Grid Time Lapse

A 2 year Time Lapse of everything we've built and renovated on our 4 acre homestead so far, this is our journey to becoming more off-grid. This is a big one, we hope you enjoy it!
We are Grace and Ryan, we bought a multi-generational small holding in Somerset with an aim to live the old school off grid good life. Think organic home-grown veg in our no dig raised beds, too much DIY, cooking outside over the fire and most importantly, making the most of time with family and friends.
Here is a two year timelapse of our off-grid homestead journey so far, including keeping chickens, our vegetable garden, getting solar panels, renovating our abandoned shed into a log store, decorating an outbuilding, hosting a wedding on our land and having a baby.

    I am so glad to have found your channel in my feed. It is also nice to find some homesteaders in our own country. May I congratulate you on the birth of your son Arthur and so sorry you lost your first set of chickens. Foxes are a nuisance just watch the chickens as they can also attack in the day. Though I do see next to the chicken house you have a covered chicken run, I reckon that is why the previous people enclosed the run. You have a beautiful piece of land and you have done so much in two years you can be very proud of yourselves. I have never seen a bee hive like that and honey being tapped immediately from a hive. Would love in a future video what type of hive it is and how it works. I wish you, Ryan, Arthur and your parents the very best for 2024 and for all your ideas and business ideas to work out successfully. I look forward to watching your adventures. Have a lovely day.

    Nice film! Love that you planted trees on the same year you’re son was born. That will be a forever touchstone. That was a magnificent fox! Be sure to wrangle the chickens every evening! 😂

    Why don't you have a few sheep, to maintain the grass? You also get meat out of the deal as well, when the time comes.

  • @thelittleholding

    @thelittleholding

    7 ай бұрын

    You’re right it does make sense but there are a few reasons why we haven’t . First of all we have no real knowledge about having sheep so it would be a massive learning curve which currently we don’t have the time to put into to learning about (as of yet). We then have plans for the land (glamping, hosting feasts etc.) but just haven’t done it yet and the sheep could disrupt these plans.. And finally our land just isn’t set out for them currently. When we first moved here we actually let a farmer use the land for her sheep to graze on and we quickly learnt that meant that our newly planted trees were not going to survive and that our fences were in very bad condition. Saying this, it is a great idea and we do want to have more animals in the future, we just want to do it gradually and not overwhelm ourselves with too much to learn or do. If you watch our newer vlogs you’ll see we’re currently in the process of converting a horsebox into a food van. So we just have to prioritise what we juggle and how. 😊

    @@thelittleholding Fair enough. It's all about balance. Keep abreast of the goings on in the world though, especially the ominous push to restrict farming in Europe. Food security is going to be a very big deal, very soon. As I understand it, part of your reason for buying this property, was the realization of how quickly your "normal" life could be taken from you.

    You often mention " Little Holding" how little is Little./??

  • @thelittleholding

    @thelittleholding

    7 ай бұрын

    By Little Hholding we are referring to the fact that it’s not quite a small holding. We only have chickens and bees, so didn’t feel like we could quite call it a farm or small holding (plus those names were probably taken too). The land itself is 4 acres, before hand we had practically no garden so this ironically feels pretty big to us to be honest!

    It’s by Flow Hive - they have some great videos talking all about it. You still need to know all about bees and inspecting the hive but it makes harvesting super easy!
