11 Black-bellied Whistling Duck babies - teamwork you won't believe - 4K

If you enjoy this video, please follow me on Vimeo at vimeo.com/h2otara Vimeo is my main channel and it's ad-free. I post these videos to share nature with others who care about it, and I keep receiving copyright claims on my YT videos on music that I've paid to license. It's frustrating to shoot the video, edit it, pay to license the music and then have other people try to make money on it. I may take down this channel and just post to Vimeo if the copyright claims continue.
This pair of Black-bellied Whistling Ducks arrived in our pond in early May. Since then I have watched and photographed and videoed a plethora of behaviors, but none like what I witnessed on the morning of August 10th. Temperatures in the small box in the sun must have been almost fatal on many days that the outside temperature was in the high 90’s. During the last couple of days, when instead of alternating incubation they both stayed in the box as their eggs hatched, I watched them both panting and wondered if they would be able to stick it out.
For the week and a half before the big day I went out before sunrise every morning, staying until at least 10am in case it was “the day,” and as the jumping grew imminent, I would stay until noon with two complete digiscoping systems so that I could have one camera on the box and one on the “landing zone.” The one thing I noticed over and over is how in sync and in tune they are, but what I witnessed this morning gave new meaning to the word “teamwork.”
Digiscoped using GH4’s mounted on Swarovski STX85 and STX95 scopes using Digidapters, Manfrotto 502 heads and a set of RRS TVC-33 legs with leveling base for the system shooting the dynamic video.

    Very dramatic scenes with the little gator/croc but also very smart by the male duck to lure it away from the ducklings with their mother by flapping the wings onto the water surface like a duck in distress, and finally standing victorious on the nesting box. These are really beautiful and smart ducks. Thanks for sharing this smart teamwork behaviour!

    Great video and music! Such smart ducks! We have 12 Whistler ducks nesting here in central Arkansas. Cannot wait to see their 'bumble bee' babies!! This is the 3rd year they have visited our farm! This year they are actually nesting! They respond to my voice and wait for me to feed them each day! Hope they all stay here, so they won't be killed by the hunters (*)>

    I watch the black-bellied Whistling Ducks That come through Katy, Texas in the fall and the spring. Our area is just a stop-over. One particularly tall house in the housing addition is a favorite and they line the roof ridge and the back fence of this house for about a week on their pilgrimage. It is nice to see where they are headed in the spring. Thank you for such beautiful footage of these amazing creatures.

    Your comment cracked me up!!! I was watching the same box waiting for more babies to jump when I read it - it's that time of year again!! We had another brood jump from that box last year. You can see them near the end jumping, and then the first time I saw them again at the very end when they were 24 days old - I got to watch all 9 grow up and learn to fly - so wonderful! How do the babies get back in the nesting box? I can't figure it out. Does the mother pick them up somehow?!?!?! Or do they never go back once they are hatched? I am guessing they do not go back as I can not see their mom carrying them like kittens are by their momma. Such beautiful birds!

  • @TaraTanaka

    Once they jump, they never go back in the box. The parents watch out for them and keep them hidden in the grass and safe from predators. Thanks for watching and asking!

    I live in Florida and it is mid August. It is hard to believe but a whistling duck has laid 15 eggs in a next box in my yard. Can you tell me the incubation period? Is it 25-30 days after the last egg is born or the first egg is born? Do they lay one egg per day?

  • @TaraTanaka

    @TaraTanaka

    6 жыл бұрын

    Congratulations!! We have one laying right now. Did you open the box, or do you have a camera? Both the male and female incubate, so there should be one in there all the time. I think they usually start incubating about a day or two before the last egg is laid. It's around 30 days. We've had a problem with fire ants getting in the box in the last few days - they can hear or smell the babies hatching. If you could quietly spray the post with some ant spray - just enough to go all the way around, it would be good. Only one incubates at a time, but when the babies start hatching, 1-2 days before the parents bring them out, both birds will be in the box. The male will usually spend a lot of time on the top checking for predators the day before, sometimes earlier, and especially that morning. They bring them out as early as 7am, but sometimes it can be as late as noon. We had a box that I wasn't really watching carefully, but I saw that behavior one morning and put a camera on the box and let the video run. When I checked it they had brought 20 (!) babies out, and that was about 2 weeks ago - the new pair is now laying in that box. Good luck!

    I'm in Florida also, and a pair of black-bellied whistling ducks just showed up at my backyard bird feeder in the last few days. I live on a canal with some large oak trees leaning over the water. Would that be a good place to set up a nest box? It is now May 16th. Has the nesting season in South Florida already passed?

  • @TaraTanaka

    @TaraTanaka

    4 жыл бұрын

    They may have started nesting, but they will probably nest for the next couple of months I would guess - you'll a large Wood Duck box and the opening should be about 4" w x 3 1/2" high. We put cedar shavings in the bottom. Try to put it where it won't get direct sun in the middle of the day - there's no insulation like in a tree.

  • @TaraTanaka

    @TaraTanaka

    4 жыл бұрын

    Put a predator guard on the post, and spray ant spray on the post UNDER the predator guard - fire ants will hear/smell the babies and attack the hatchlings if you don't - never put it on a tree for that reason. There is usually some sort of wire on the front wall to help the babies get to the hole, but nothing they could get caught in - check out WD box plans on-line or buy a very large WD box. Good luck!
