by Uroš Matić
Motherhood is traditionally associated with care which principally involves protection when necessary. Protection can involve a rection to violence, either through retreat or confrontation. Nevertheless, acts of violence are culturally framed. Cross-culturally some acts of violence are tolerated to some, but not to others. Ancient Egyptian textual and iconographic sources present us with an ideology in which violent acts committed by women were against social norms. However, in some cases these acts were legitimized, e.g., queens depicted acting violently against foreign women. The paper analyses one more until now neglected case of legitimate female violence in ancient Egypt-violent mothers.
