Nothing today comes close. There's more heart put into the songs of the 60's, 70's music.

One of the original composers of this song and 10cc member Graham Gouldman is playing bass guitar for this fantastic performance. Thanks Graham!

What's really awesome is that this song came out in the mid 70s. These guys get to stand on a stage all these decades later with this fantastic, fabulous production, and still nail this tune.

Trabaje en una Transnacional Electrolux en Venezuela, en los 90, cuando escuchaba esta cancion en el transporte que nos llevaba a casa en la madrugada, sentia lo que tu dices, lugares magicos. I was 22 when this song came out and the fella I was seeing fit this song to a tee. Brings back special memories.

Last night I was lucky enough to listen that song live at 10cc concert. And I must say that after 45 years (when I heard that for the very first time) emotions were still high. Without any doubt it is still one of the best love songs ever. Good old style 70's rock band - youngsters can only dream that 50 years from now anybody would remember their name or songs, forget a few thousand people singing together. Unbelievable experience - THANK YOU 10CC 😍

Always loved 10CC, still play their music all the time.

This is one of the most wonderful love songs of all time. The denial. The obvious love is so compelling. It is impossible not to root for this guy and to hope that his love is reasonable and receptive to his love. Anything else is a tragedy. We never know how this plays out...We can only hope for a positive outcome to this genuine cry for help. I'm not in love, so don't forget is is just a wonderful gift to humanity. Thank you.

On repeated listens recently, I think the heartbreaking truth is that it didn't turn out well. At first, the other person is excited and talking to friends about what they think is love. By the end of the song, the singer is saying about their picture "so don't you ask me to give it back"--this could imply that it's over, which would be the most natural time to ask for something like that. The soft background "big boys don't cry" seems to fit. I'm afraid his love gave up on him because he downplayed his feelings. But that by itself is such a valuable warning, to not live in denial too long. When you love someone, embrace it! Truly a wonderful gift.

The writer (the original singer Eric Stewart) explained that it was a response to when his wife asked him why he didn't say I love you very often. His thought was that it would cheapen it if used too often. He tried to say it another way and he started to imagine a guy who was in such denial but at the same time was obviously very in love. So the premise is imagined, but if you apply it to the real life of the writer it had worked out well.

One of my favorite songs of all time and that band nailed it 😍.

As a young man i lived the lyrics of this song a time or two during what I thought was my darkest days yet there was always light at the end and i sit at 62 single again but this song reminds me that fools fall in love thank you 10 cc

Stewart spent three weeks recording Gouldman, Godley and Creme singing "ahhh" 16 times for each note of the chromatic scale, building up a "choir" of 48 voices for each note of the scale. The main problem facing the band was how to keep the vocal notes going for an infinite length of time, but Creme suggested that they could get around this issue by using tape loops. Stewart created loops of about 12 feet in length by feeding the loop at one end through the tape heads of the stereo recorder in the studio, and at the other end through a capstan roller fixed to the top of a microphone stand, and tensioned the tape. By creating long loops the 'blip' caused by the splice in each tape loop could be drowned out by the rest of the backing track, providing that the splices in each loop did not coincide with each other. Having created twelve tape loops for each of the 12 notes of the chromatic scale, Stewart played each loop through a separate channel of the mixing desk. This effectively turned the mixing desk into a musical instrument complete with all the notes of the chromatic scale, which the four members together then "played", fading up three or four channels at a time to create "chords" for the song's melody. Stewart had put tape across the bottom of each channel so that it was impossible to completely fade down the tracks for each note, resulting in the constant background hiss of vocals heard throughout the song. Composer and music theory professor Thomas MacFarlane considered the resulting "ethereal voices" with distorted synthesized effects to be a major influence on Billy Joel's hit ballad "Just the Way You Are", released two years later. A basic guide track was recorded first in order to help create the melody using the vocals, but the proper instrumentation was added after the vocals had been recorded. In keeping with Godley's idea to focus on the voices, only a few instruments were used: a Fender Rhodes electric piano played by Stewart, a Gibson 335 electric guitar played by Gouldman for the rhythm melody, and a bass drum sound played by Godley on a Moog synthesizer which Creme had recently purchased and learned how to program. The drum sound that was created was very soft and more akin to a heartbeat, in order not to overpower the rest of the track. Creme played piano during the bridge and the middle eight, where it replicated the melody of lyrics that had been discarded. The middle eight is also the only part of the song that contains a bass guitar line, played by Gouldman. A toy music box was recorded and double tracked out of phase for the middle eight and the outro. Once the musical backing had been completed Stewart recorded the lead vocal and Godley and Creme the backing vocals, but even though the song was finished Godley felt it was still lacking something. Stewart said, "Lol remembered he had said something into the grand piano mics when he was laying down the solos. He'd said 'Be quiet, big boys don't cry' - heaven knows why, but I soloed it and we all agreed that the idea sounded very interesting if we could just find the right voice to speak the words. Just at that point the door to the control room opened and our secretary Kathy Redfern looked in and whispered 'Eric, sorry to bother you. There's a telephone call for you.' Lol jumped up and said 'That's the voice, her voice is perfect!'." The group agreed that Redfern was the ideal person, but Redfern was unconvinced and had to be coaxed into recording her vocal contribution, using the same whispered voice that she had used when entering the control room. These whispered lyrics would later serve as the inspiration for the name of the 1980s band Boys Don't Cry

This song will always remind me of my oldest sister. She played this song over and over. What a beautiful song.

Oh, the childhood memories. This was always a perplexing piece to listen to. Only in the past few years did I learn all the complexities, dub, overdubs and more overdubs and time went into this song.

I can remember listening to the radio over and over again.I loved it. still do.

This song came out when I was in high school... I'd heard it over the weekend and came in Monday morning raving about it-Trying to tell everyone I could how amazing it was... my words fell on deaf ears. Funk and Soul (which I also loved) were the only sounds they were familiar with or interested in. I was mocked and humiliated. Never stopped loving this song or stopped listening to all kinds of music. Passed that part of me on to my kids... Lots of beauty in this world... Don't let ignorance cheat you out of it.

Great lead vocal from Iain Hornal. He was also amazing with Jeff Lynne's ELO live.

An absolute beautiful piece of music! Notice how it takes an orchestra and multiple vocalists to replicate songs from 10CC and the Beach Boys in a live setting when the guys used to knock it down in the studio with only 5 guys? Beautiful!

Totally agree, I saw 10CC live in the 70's and they still "have it" today. However, just need to clarify one point about this particular song. 10CC didn't simply knock this song down in a few minutes. Loved this song as a child. I see why I loved it. They did really good.

This magical performance takes this masterpiece from 1975 and places it into an altogether different realm of pure, ethereal beauty. I was 25 in 1975. This performance transports me back to a time filled with promise, hope, and enterprise. THANK YOU, 10cc.
