When using the knob to make adjustments the left and right arrows allow you to change the step 1mV , 10mV , 100mV , 1A .... as shown by the highlighted cursor in the Set display area.

Thanks for the video. I didn't think there was anyone left who knew what an IMSAI was let alone name their channel after it. I still have mine and it worked the last time I tried it.

Pretty neat power supply. I just got an older BK Precision 1651 supply with analog displays for voltage and current.

Have one too. It's a fine power supply and i like that it's programmable via ethernet using lxi tools for automated testing.

Great power supply, i'd have one in a minute except I wouldn't. That old style circular telephone type layout for the keypad puts me right off. What were they thinking?

note that the numbers go counter clockwise direction on a phone dial. Actually, that circular number pad is kind of interesting.

I believe if you buy the base model. Non "A" version you can just upgrade the licence to get higher resolution. Just trying to find out if it also can handle more amps with a mod. I like to inject 4 amps in line so my thermal cam can find high resistance components.

interesting that it was last calibrated in 2018. Usually, a company will keep that up. Maybe this was part of a pallet sale when a company went defunct. Been using an HP E3634A. My gear must have knobs and switches on the front panel. Virtual controls seem cumbersome to me. I am glad to see Rigol did not do away with physical controls. Amazing how that power supply (new) costs a couple hundred more than a Rigol 100 MHz 4 channel scope.

Have you shown off your old school scope, tucked away in the corner, on a previous video? Does not look like a Tek so was wondering what it was... it is a homebuilt? I had a fascination with building a home made scope when i was a kid (80's) mainly cause I was broke-@ss poor at the time... Cheers,

Question from a newby. ‘M thinking of buying this PSU, but Rigol makes an 831A which is similar, but has negative terminal. I understand from reading that a negative terminal might be handy for analog projects (everyone gives the example of an op-amp). However, can’t this 832A be configured to provided negative for an op-amp project? Isn’t negative just electrons flowing from ground to the “positive” terminal. I’m new. Don’t burn me down;) trying to learn. Thank you.

the DP832 has two of the supplies with a common ground so they are both positive. the third is floating so you can connect the negative to ground and have three positive supplies, or you can connect positive to ground and then use the negative side. So this is how I have mine set up to give say +/-15 and +5

Ok, I think I'm going to pull the trigger on the DP832A. Big money for me, but I'm beginning to feel the limitation of experimenting with circuit design and using a 5V adapter that came with a telephone. :) But, if there is a better solution for a beginner that someone wants to recommend then I'm very interested in making a better choice of PSU based on other people's experience.@@IMSAIGuy

@@IMSAIGuy Thank you for the link. Few years ago I bought inexpensive (~$50) 2 - 30V 5A power supply from Amazon. It had on average 100mV ripples. I added in 100uH choke and ceramic 11uF (2 x 22uF/25V in series, Murata) capacitor to the output terminal, after the modification the ripples dropped to ~5mV, Dave would say “clean as a whistle” :)

For those that have the non A version, now you can flash the A version to add the color screen, and of course it was already possible to enable all the options even before this new possibility. I love the Encoder, I use it constantly to increase/decrease voltage. For the cooler what I've done is a little overkill but I've cut the pieces of metal in the cooler hole to make sure it is a complete hole and put an 80mm to 120mm fan shroud with a corresponding silent fan.

Hope you don't have the same problem that others have with the 832. Jerrry Walker has a whole series of videos on repairs he did to his. You have the A model, maybe it's different... The lesson that Rigol's engineers took deeply to their heart is "making stuff user-friendly". They are maybe not making the best solutions on the market, and their "soft blocking policy" is a bit irritating, yet every time I compare their products to the "western" brands I can say Rigol is making products exactly the way people want to use it. Intuitive interface, the screen where you see everything in one eye-catch - the basic thing for fast and pleasant worktime.
