In terms of pure shotmaking this is probably their best match, but the drama and significance of the Wimbledon 2008 final still makes it a greater match than this one.

@@createyouremotion3831 Speaking as a Federer fan, the 2017 final was not an amazing match in terms of the shotmaking. There are only a handful of excellent points that were played, as opposed to Wimby 2008 and this match which had 20+ completely ridiculous extended rallies and winners. The 2017 final is only so great because of the extreme hype surrounding it and the significance the victory had for Federer’s career.

Stunning shot making. Still remember how out of sorts Roger looked when I watched this live. 4-2 Federer first set. That double fault was the end of this match. His nerves were jangling in this match from the first minute. After that moment he never really recovered. I love Federer to death. But dear lord. Against Nole and Nadal, the man lost grand slam matches, he really should have won. He either had all the momentum but couldn't convert. Or he threw away leads. A great match. It must have been devastating for Federer to lose 3 consecutive major finals. Not only did Nadal win on Federer's favorite surface, but on a hard-court. That dispelled any lingering illusion that Nadal was a clay-court specialist. At a time when Federer was almost universally acknowledged as the GOAT, Nadal through these 3 wins cast grave doubts about that. In fact, by this point, it became clear that Nadal was the superior player overall, although many experts still stubbornly believed that Federer deserved to be called the GOAT.

I’d argue maybe the best point ever. I have no idea why people put the 2017 rally over it. 2017 rally was good because it was long, but both players were so much slower by then and there really weren’t any crazy shots in it. The 2009 rally had probably 4-5 different crazy shots in a row (Nadal’s first forehand down the line, Federer’s GOATED forehand slice, Nadal retrieving the forehand slice, Nadal defense, then Nadal blasting a forehand down the line from a compromised position).
@eggsngaming
5 ай бұрын
Yeah the quality of shots in the 2009 final was definitely higher overall. The 2017 was more about the drama/match situation. Federer was older and hadn't won a slam in years, and winning that amazing point gave him break point on Rafa's serve which he capitalized on, and went on to win the match.@@SJ-di5zu

@@richerlouis3391 Clearly in this match Federer was struggling to penetrate the court with his backhand. Nadal was attacking his backhand the entire match. With the power from the new racquet, Nadal would be toast here. It just shows how much Federer had to adapt to play in so many different generations. From S&V to 2019 baseline grinding tennis. Nadal did well to save the break points in the third but Federer in general had to work way harder to win points due to his lower racquet power. Nadal was basically just looping to Federer's backhand the entire match and Federer constantly had to find solutions. Mental strength doesn't just mean saving break points.
It's amazing that 8 years later, Federer won the first set and it was also a 5 setter thrilller.

Yeah the quality of shots in the 2009 final was definitely higher overall. The 2017 was more about the drama/match situation. Secondly, Nadal's game had also evolved to a more aggressive style which allowed him to perform better on fast courts. He also made the Shanghai final that year on the fastest court of the season, something he wouldn't have done back in 2009. Well to put things in a clearer way, Nadal did make the Shanghai final in 2009, but note 2 important factors : -surface wasn't as fast as in 2017. -Nadal benefitted from 2 withdrawals in a row against ljiubicic and Lopez in the QF and SF. So that final was basically a fluke.
If federer hit his backhand in 2009 like he did in 2017 he would have won straight sets.
SHEEEESHHHH
Federer not winning 28 slams is a tragedy.
Unfortunately for nadal, he started beating Federrer on Grass and Hardcourts but got injured just after that which led to emergence of Djoko. Otherwise he would have won 35 slams by now.
The mono did Federer dirty during this tournament. Look how gassed out he is at the end.

Rogers backhand was little weak , thats why he lost most big match from nadal .
6:14 how could federer guess the serves's direction
I don't see any shot in federer game that is truly lethal to nadal.. he is powerless , its marked on his face...

The rally at 16:12 shows the what playing more than 3 shots to fed fh can do. The weak link for fed is his bh in this matchup ( until 2017)
Remember he struggled a lot the previous match vs Roddick and then he played such a great match against Nadal (tons of insane and humiliating winners) It looked he kept all of his energy for this match

He didn't struggle against Roddick, he beat him in straight sets. He struggled against Berdych in the fourth round where he was lead 2 sets to love, and finally beat him in 5 sets.

For me NAdal is the goat
This is some really high quality tennis from both. Same level. Rafa 1% better but soo good
final ao 2009>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>final ao 2017
that nadal was imposible to beat wen 100%
I'm sorry but even thou Djokovic has more slams I still in love with these two 😊😊😊

This AO court was so slow. Like watching clay
AO court feels so slow, they basically ruined it for fed's game and favored the likes nadal/djokovic from this point onwards.

Australian Open has always been slow. The green surface before it was even slower, rated at 3 for medium speed by the ITF, while this blue surface is rated at 4 for medium-fast. Nadal was just the better player that day.
I mean look at feds backhand when the ball doesnt bounce as high with when ir does. Nadal gets a short ball from feds backhand all to often to hit a winner Fed took too much time to counter nadals strategy
Rafa vs Fed = unfair matchup of backhands
Other galaxy
Both player were impotent against Djokovic in the last 15 years in AO speaks a volume

The unprofessional bias for Federer from the commentators was so obvious. They sounded so depressed at the end lmao.
at some point in his career ,, success gets to his head (Roger), otherwise he would have achieved 25+ slams. He could not go beyond a certain level. And that's the difference Djokovic has made . Novak always admit that he learn so much from rafaa and Roger . But Roger couldn't learn from Djokovic that time has changed u need to be more mentally skilled , and that's the biggest difference between Novak and other players

remember federer didnt have a coach for 2 years if im not wrong, that makes me think bc he felt superior and then rafa and novak started to get better and better but federer stayed the same and as you said he didnt learn anything from them prolly he was thinking hes too good for them

All three are mental giants to win as much as they did … we must appreciate all three. It was the greatest time ever in sports when we had these battles.
This was before Novak

Nadal was winning most of the rallies. Federer had no clue to cut short the rallies. Why Federer was weeping in ceromancy after thoroughly screwed by Nadal. Pete Sampras was enjoying Serve & Volley game till Lytton Hewitt & Marat Safin pushed him to base line to play rallies. Pete Sampras suddenly faced new tennis players & announced his retirement after winning US open 2002 Pete Sampras, once the greatest, and Champion till 2000 became unseeded player in 2002 after loosing 2001 4th round.

Federer most stylish player ever.
90% of rafa's shots going to the Backhand and he barely won it anyway.
