Grey in videos: rigorous research and explanations Grey in Cortex: haha funni mic setup goes brrr
Grey's consistent torturing of Myke about his audio setup is truly inspiring.
When last Cortex was out, I wasn't even subscriber of Grey, let alone podcasts, but I glad I finally watched him

Myke's bafflement at Grey's attempt to be an audio guy is hilarious. Sends me back to my studio classes in college

Regarding Tags vs Folders, Grey is kind of right. Tags are unions of properties and Folders are intersections of properties. Taging a file is describing it with the union of base elements, where if file A has property 1 and property 2, then it has the property 1&2, denoting it's both. A Folder system says if a file should be in File A and File B, then it belongs in the lowest down parent file of the both, denoting that it isn't quite either of those things. Folders allow you to delete superfluous information and customize structure on each level, while Tags require you to build up the structure to describe the object, which makes searching for a file much easier.

Folders tell you what something isn't the deeper it is in the file system, because you're declaring it mutually exclusive from any other folder not on that path. Tags let you know what something is with the more tags it has, but often something that is missing a tag doesn't necessarily mean that it doesn't have that propery, just that it's not relevant towards searching for it.

This is a really nice way of describing it, thanks!
For the algorithm. Also cable messes are the mark of productivity.
4:30 it's like having a more sensitive tool that captures the same range of information. A blown out image will be blown out, regardless of colour depth. The same goes for sound.

I think what grey meant here was more that if it's too quiet, you're more likely to be able to salvage it, but got it backwards. I agree that if it's clipping, there's no saving it, just like there's no information in purely white pixels. But if an image is too dark, better color depth gives more nuances in these regions allowing it to be brightened with less noticable loss of quality. Same goes for audio.

@@mchammer5026 yes, you are correct, but the analogy is slightly different higher bitrates allow the measured soundwaves to be stored more accurately. Making a recording louder usually also makes the inaccuracies louder, there will be less of those. the image analogy would be that enlarging an image with more pixels per inch will look better, but still worse than just capturing an image of the desired size directly.
@mchammer5026

@@qwertyman1511 that pixel analogy doesn't sound right. more pixels is the equivalent of a higher sampling rate, which never even came up. the higher bitrate means more bits per sample, which exactly equals more color depth in an image. a sound recording is like a 1d greyscale image, where the pixels are the samples. clipped audio is just all ones in the encoded loudness, exactly like white is all ones in the greyscale value. a higher bitrate then reduces the quantization error, making it possible to recover the material. what still deteriorates the quality when making a recording/image louder/brighter is the amount of noise, yes. but relating that to pixels is not right.
I’m so glad that there is a new Cortex!

Really glad that a new Cortex is out. Didn't listen to it yet, so I will listen to it and will then edit this in with my opinion!

The worst part of the UK lockdowns I've heard of is the limitation on the right to peacefully protest, which has also been removed in some US states. It's bordering on Orwellian

@@archdukefranzferdinand567 but the fact that the government can deem rights like protesting null and void means that people in the UK dont actually have freedoms. All they have is government permission to do things.
