Axel and Lutz are jumps named after their creators, so an axel and a lutz are the actual names of figure skating jumps. Loop is the name of a jump by itself, a toe loop being a completely different jump. There are six fundamental jumps in figure skating, 3 edge jumps and 3 toe jumps, the edge jumps being the axel, the salchow, and the loop, and the toe jumps being the toe loop, the flip, and the lutz. In this you say that Axel Nishigori and Lutz Nishigori are simply named after the creators of jumps while Loop Nishigori is named after the toe loop jump

yeah that came up a lot. I also kept thinking it would’ve made the animation much better sometimes to hold skaters’ poses (like jump landings, with a beautiful leg extension). all the animation work was done, but I guess every nanosecond was at a premium...

When you hear how much effort the staff put into this show and how much had to be cut for time it’s really no wonder season two is taking so long. Especially since they have a movie on the way.

At this point I think that'd be more likely than season 2 and the movie. Just fill in the empty spaces with the cut scenes and they're done

Just because *you* don't like it doesn't mean it's overrated. If there's anything you should take from this video, it's that Yuri on Ice deserves the praise and following it gets. It won a TON of awards. That many people can't be wrong.

I'm SO HAPPY for Yamamoto. Despite her talented portfolio she would never get the recognition she deserves. Not surprising since female directors in general are oftentimes overlooked in the anime industry. She had to work so hard to get this anime into fruition, and every step of the way faced criticism (she was even told that choosing Kubo as writer would be a bad idea). Just goes to show that sticking to your guns can pay off tremendously

That was relatively subtle considering he called triplet Axel “Alex” (and Lutz became “Lootz”, and the loop became a toe jump)... Clearly this guy isn’t a skating person but an anime person. It was good overall, but I couldn’t help notice...

Maybe he got confused by toe loop, but the loop is an edge jump. It actually was also named after a person: it’s also called the Rittberger (mostly in Europe).

Glad somebody who is a bigger youtuber and (hate to point this out but I have to) is male is seeing the good in the show and all the work they put into it as well as pointing out some animation flaws. It goes to show that just because a show is mainstream doesn't mean it should be thrown aside for the whole saying "popular=good". It shows that shows that are popular, like this one, had hard work, research and time put into it. Yes, a tragedy for the figure skating world, the nation of Kazakstan, and for YOI fans, too. Not sure what they’ll do to Otabek story-wise, but I pray they do justice to the real-world inspiration for his character. RIP, Denis Ten. :(

I was initially really upset that the movie has been postponed for so long or that they haven’t said anything about a season two given that for a fact , Yuri won’t retire since he didn’t get a gold medal, making this a cliff hanger but after hearing everything that goes into this anime, I’m no longer upset, they really take their time to perfect it and the results given in the first season are worth it so I’m expecting huge things from the movie and/or season 2

I absolutely love how we see the same routine with Yuri every episode but it changes because he changes. How he gets more confident. How victor reminds him at first to seduce him and by the end doesn’t have to. It’s all quite nice.

@@alicebeck2023 yeah!! you can really see yuri's character evolving as he gains more confidence and learns more difficult stuff. when you learn to look at the routines not only as stuff he does for the competition, but as an expression of yuri himself, you can get so much more out of those parts of the show. sometimes i'd be watching a routine where yuri decided to change something, or something in his way of presenting himself changed, and i'd start tearing up like "MY BOY'S GROWN SO MUCH"

No one knows when the movie will be released or what it’ll be about but if the fandom practically combusted from the Welcome to the Madness PREVIEW then we will 100% not be able to handle a full on movie. If you think crashing Crunchyroll was bad, just wait till the movie’s released

the thing that makes this story beautiful is the fact that the whole love thing wasn't planned and just grew on its own. its raw, relatable and realistic. bravo.

yuri's free skate was amazing each and every time I watched it, it still gaves me the feels

About fact #5: I've read many interviews about getting this show greenlit and most of them said that Sayokan had a lot of difficulties trying to find a studio that would do her series. Some of the reasons were the skating animations & the fact that the studios she pitched them to didn't understand the reasoning of the story. In one interview Sayokan mentioned that they wanted to change the premise of YOI- they wanted it to be school based-turned into a club etc. so a completely different story from what we have now. So I'm slightly confused about this fact. Amazing video btw :)

Shenna its true. I went to Animefest and Sayo Yamamoto talked about how desperate she felt because no one would pick up her show. Also Otsuka, the producer, said many studios turned it down because of the romance as well. She and Kubo really struck gold in the end!

+tbarain I've also read that she's been pitching for a skating anime since 2011-2012 and all the studios she went to didn't want to do it since according to them 'who wants to watch a skating anime'. It was only until sochi happened and Yuzuru Hanyu won was when she thought that she would have a chance to direct a skating anime. - Also, I can't remember which # fact it was Victor's skating style was inspired not only by Plushenko but Lambiel as well.

I'm so happy she sticked to her story. I would not have been the same, not as great. Do we really need yet again another school club story? This is unique, finally different. I'm really bored of the same story over and over again, taking risks and doing something different pays off!

Yes yes and yes! I love figure skating and it is the main focus of the show but Yuri on Ice really did it for me off the ice and even away from Viktor and Yuuri's romance. Nobody in this show really fits a trope that is common for anime to have. Yuuri could fit into the nervous, crybaby protag role but he's also stubborn, headstrong, and has a lot of hidden forwardness when his anxiety is put on hold. Yurio easily could've been the punky rival side character but he's got a lot of depth and some of the most amazing development I've seen in shows lately. I could get into Viktor and everybody else but that would take so much time cause everybody has their own story and background. Everybody has a dream. They purposely made everybody their own main character in their own story.

Victor is by far my favorite. Everything about him just screams beauty and perfection. He looks so pretty. Victor has brought me to tears many times. This is actually one of the only anime's that has brought me to tears with how well it was made. It's not even a sad anime, I just cry cause of the animations, and the characters, and the character developments and how they've progressed. Everything about this anime is phenomenal and bravo to the entire crew that made this show. From the animators/artists to the voice actors. To the directors and the characters. You really hit it out of the park in my book! I sure will have a hard time finding an anime to top this one.

When you’ve watched the anime so many times you can just hear the opening by just seeing pictures of it.

I know I should, but I just can't watch the last episode of YOI because I just can't have it end!

My friend stood at the very highest point on the schools playground and started singing History Maker as loudly as possible. I love my friends!

This really gives us so much insight on how much time and effort they spent to make this anime. This anime deserves all the awards it’s received, not because it’s “popular.” But because it really is a masterpiece.

Props to the animators and anyone that worked on the anime. Those skating scenes must have taken so long

Usually these type of videos share false info or info that's already widely known so I procrastinated watching it for so long, but...it's proven me wrong. So wrong. The more you know! Edit: Thank you for teaching me such beautiful things.

on the topic of the crashes from the 12th episode, IT WAS HELL. I bought a crunchy roll membership to try and watch in class but ran out of time. it took until 2:30 ish to be online which was about 3 hours off schedule. it was totally worth it though

this is the only anime i can repeat over an over again without getting tired of it

Whenever an episode was mentioned it always said season 1 Season 1... Season....1...😢
