In their small London flat, Dalmatians Pongo and Perdy, and their human "pets" Roger and Anita, are overjoyed by the arrival of 15 puppies. But when the spotted-fur-loving Ms. De Vil and her clumsy cohorts, Jasper and Horace, dognap the litter -- along with every other Dalmatian pup in London -- Pongo and Perdy must rally the town's animals to the rescue. The plan hurls them towards a thrilling climax filled with uproarious moments as the puppies attempt to outwit their captors and bring on a final showdown with Cruella! Packed with one of the largest and cutest collections of puppies ever brought to film, 101 DALMATIANS also features a superb cast of talented humans, including Jeff Daniels, Joely Richardson and Joan Plowright.

    This is one of, if not the best, live-action Disney movie., Mostly thanks to Glen Close's portrayal of Cruella De Vil. She played her so perfectly, she was so intimidating and so evil. And her clothes were awesome.

    What's weird is how given modern Disney's tendency to "humanize" their villains, Glen Close's version of Cruella is arguably even more evil than her animated counterpart. I say this because the '61 version at the very least understands that the puppies have to wait a period of time before leaving their mother (she asks it while writing the check) while the live action version literally asks that they just be put in a bag so she can take them then and there. Also the '96 version makes it very clear that she's seeking out puppies specifically because their fur is less coarse than grown dogs and intends to kill them from infancy, while with the animated version she only starts demanding H&J kill them as puppies when she realizes she's lost control of the situation and clearly isn't thinking rationally. Also the '96 version has Cruella state that the other 84 puppies were actually stolen as opposed to the animated version that states the other 84 were "bought and paid for." That's not to say the live action is superior, its just weird to think that the original character comes off more sane than Close's version (not even going near the Emma Stone version lol)

    Glenn Close did such an amazing portrayal of Cruella De Vil! When you said that the ending sequence reminded you of Home Alone, I had a look and it turns out this film was produced by John Hughes who did the 1st three Home Alone films! He also worked on the National Lampoon films, The Breakfast Club and Beethoven to name a few!

    The original movie is based on a book and in that story, there were 83 other puppies and Roger and his wife had gotten a 3rd adult dalmatian, female already producing milk, to help Perdie nurse her puppies. So, it was actually 98 puppies and the 3 adult dogs. Also, Cruella had purchased all of the puppies except for the 15, so they were all legally hers. There wasn't really anyone to come pick them up. I don't remember if that was explained in the original movie, but I'm pretty sure that it wasn't in this movie.

  • @antifagoat6591

    @antifagoat6591

    I thought the 3rd dalmatian also had her puppies stolen. That was why she was producing milk. She was also "liver-spotted," meaning her pups were taken for their brown spot color. Cruella was making coats out of different dalmatian markings, which was why she wanted so many. 😱

    Ah, I adored this movie as a kid. It's STILL the movie I point to whenever someone says all live-action Disney remakes are bad. Because clearly back than, much more time and effort was put into updating the story well being true to it. That being said, one bad thing did come out of this movie. And that was people adopting Dalmatians without realizing they don't make good family dogs. They aren't good with kids. So sadly lots and lots of puppies were adopted, just to end up in shelters where no one wanted them

    22:14 they used a dummy for the stillborn untill he's brought back to life. Then it's indeed a real puppy. In the animated one I guess Roger either perfomed CPR on Lucky, to make the heart go again. Or tried to clear the lungs, making it cough and breathe (sometimes slime gets stuck). I practiced CPR via tutorials for the upcoming litter of my mother's black labrador, just in case. Stillborns are common, and it might not always work but the chance is always there.

    I honestly as an adult myself still like the Home Alone like slapstick in the later half. Kinda satisfying to see villains trying to kill innocent puppies get hit with these traps maybe even more so than when villains trying to kill a child get hit with traps like in Home Alone.Also to be fair about them taking in the extra puppies, they also did it in the cartoon version so kinda confused on why you're shocked by them doing that in this version. Also in both versions Roger and Anita get married after meeting (although one can assume there was a time jump in both cases). I think knowing the producer for this movie is the same one who did the Home Alone movies help the slapstick direction make more sense.

    I quite enjoy the back half of the film, to be honest. The physical acting from Hugh Laurie and Mark Williams kills me to this day, and watching Glen Close emerge from the molasses like some swap monster is burned into my memories thanks to the trailers for this movie. In general, I prefer the slapstick of 101 Dalmatians to Home Alone anyway. It's just a lot more fun. But I also liked that Disney at one point included slapstick in this movie. It really reminds me of their older classics like Aristocats, Robin Hood, the Jungle Book, etc etc, and it's cool to see some of the antics done in a live action setting. And it's a shame that it gets compared to Home Alone so often, and Disney never really did any more slapstick-heavy comedies.

    Or you can watch 102 I know that’s another good one along with 101 dalmatians two patch‘s London adventure plus you should definitely think about taking some of the other ones like Christopher Robin. I know that’s another good movie. Or piglets big movie and also Pooh’s Heffalump movie two + it really has been a long time since I have seen the tigger movie

    Yeah see I have to agree with you. They wanted more like of American actor who played in this movie just to make it more like cool that’s why I think that they should like redo this one but like totally different or at least do 101 dalmatians three that would totally be cool but like exactly like the classic though but like in live action so it would be like 101 dalmatians three live action of how the other movie from 1996 or whatever this one came out well was because then they’re supposed to say just was

    Yeah, but it just didn’t have like the classic. Feel like the original one a little bit. Like if they actually made more of the classic ceiling, then it would’ve been really cool. So more like where they made it like Carella smashed through the window. In the classic one though and how they were supposed to be pin ink all over the Pongo and Rogers, but like if they made it yeah if they made it more like exactly like the classic then it would’ve been like a total hit in the box office but that’s why they give it a B minus that’s not so bad though
