I was at a Crawfish boil last weekend & the DJ had the same EV speakers, they sounded great. Thanks for the demonstration.
this is the exact video i was looking for! i'm on a tight budget and was looking at these two
Either or listening to them in person and purchasing the one you like the most will be the most satisfying. I personally love Ev products but I went with some JBL SRX 835p 3 way tops. Good full range but the dsp does take away the "character" with the factory flat EQ. I am wanting to get a pair or 2 of the EVs for a smaller rig as well as buy about 6 of the 18s or get some RCF 8006s.
This a BADASS review fo these two speakers!!!! You are awesome, dude!!! The audio sample comparison you did was phenomenal and I'll be looking to buy a pair of Mackies!!! I would buy them from you just because you are awesome but I'm not near you and I cannot use either one of your links because they don't ship to my location but you da best!!!
I bought an ev zlx 12 two days ago and I've been happy with my purchase so far. It sounds great at all volumes, has adjustable eq settings and an aux input which is an added bonus. It has plenty of bass in my opinion, plus theres a club mode and you can add xtra bass/treb as well. I believe it has a 3 yr warranty, not sure if mackie has that. Youd be happy with either speaker but I would recommend the EVs or QSC for higher end!!
I think you should keep the track playing and switch between speakers. Don’t start the track from the beginning. I think it’s easier to see what speaker is performing better if you do that. Thanks for the comparison video. You’re a wealth of knowledge.

Ehh you have to hear the same sounds coming from each speaker to truly compare... Like how does that not make more sense for a apples to apples comparison. I think he is doing it the correct way.

Trying to determine.what direction I should go .listening to you talk about various types of speakers I have a good idea of which way to go . Thanks to your advice. Thanks again
Thank you ! Do you think that the same comparison in both 15 " Would be the same results ?
Hi, sorry to be a little late here but just found your channel and your reviews are really pretty good. Right now I'm going back and forth between the Mackie Thump 12 inch and the Alto TS312. I thought you did a comparison review of these two speakers but can't find it, can you help me out and point me in the right direction for this review? Thanks!
I'm using electro voice zlx12p for live on piano Yamaha sx900 on vocal for live whoah so very beautiful sound on electro voice thanks Ev❤️🔊

First, thanks for your speaker comparing test. The test was worth a like from me. Second, I know you're testing sounds through KZread and a viewer cannot expect to hear the exact difference between the two. But viewers, if you put on the headphones you can hear the difference. @Expert island, I have recent purchase two Mackie DRM312 and they sound similar to the Mackie Thump12A your tested. I know my new speakers are costumed to djing (and I am a dj) but when I did this recent event, I was expecting a more delicate sound like the EVs. What I got is heavy bass (sometimes, out of control bass) and that is a crazy comment coming from a dude like me who like a lot of bass. (I mean Reggae hitting hard bass, like I give you a heart attack bass) and I have those type of speakers. I came to your vlog because I was expecting the Thump to sound a like bit elegant but it didn't. Thanks again for your test because it helped me think about my next additional speaker set.

Now this comment I can really lean on for best needed clarity... By any chance, have you tested the EV 18" subwoofer, I really would love to know if it delivers a warm enough bass sound? (I'm very inexperienced with these speakers overall, so I am depending on the comments and vlog reviews)
Really nice video. Think the EV sounds a bit more musical, clearer. For the price I say it's worth it. Getting ready to buy the EV. Thanks
I agree with most of the other comments, the EV's I think is cleaner (in default mode) I use 5 of the ZLX 12P's for monitors with my band and the ETX35P's on top with ETX 18P's for subs for our mains. The sound is incredible.
Between these two I prefer the EV by a large margin. A much smoother and more musical speaker. Throw in the Mackie SRM 450 and now I swing slightly in favor of the SRM. Not nearly as large a difference but noticeable. The SRM 450 is also a lot more $$ @ $549
I got 6 zlx 15 and the ekx 12 18sp woofer I love them ev it's the best
The zlx with a sub is perfect
Hello, please tell us what is best for DJ, live vocals and conducting events, weddings, banquets for up to 130 people. MAckie Thump 15A + SAB Alto ts 312s or Alto Ts 315+ SAB ts 312s ? Not only the volume is important, but also the quality. Thanks
EV sounded better. Clearer than the thump. I just ordered my EV zlx 12p. Thanks for the review
I bought a 15bst by Mackie for a family party of 60 to 70 people next week, anyone any advice on where to keep the sound settings so not to over drive it. Really would appreciate it
Hi . Can i use Alto Ts-308 as home theater center speaker ! Thanks.
I have the previous version of Thump 15, 1000 Watts. Their sound quality is not close to EV, but for DJing on weddings and events up to 100 people, they are the best choice. Especially if you use only 2 PAs without subs.

Thump 15 250w maximum
I have a pair of the ZLX 12p's and love the smooth top end clarity but as others have noted they limit easily with bass heavy material. It seems to be running about 250 watts RMS since that is the rating of the passive version.. I'm guessing the Mackie is around 300WRMS since it can outrun the EV.
Would have liked to hear vocals for clarity of that, since that is primarily what I would be using this for in solo performance
I have the Mackies- totally regret not spending a little more for the EVs. Sound is muffled and just doesn't cut through a crowd well. I am a mobile DJ and when it comes to talking on the mic the mackies are muddy, and while they sound pretty good on sound bass heavy music (hip-hop, rap, EDM) when I am playing lighter genres like soul, R&B, soft rock, classical etc.. they are sorely lacking in crispness and definition. Going to buy the EVs and have the Mackies as my "emergency" backups

Power does not always equal quality. Today people have a jones for power and are hung up on wattage. I prefer a speaker that is much more efficient with a hight SPL output.
Hello are these two roughly the same in sizes?
I just wanted to know if the EV is a BI AMP speaker?
Wow, I got the mackies and they are great. But these ev's sound at least ten times better.
I have 2 EV Zlx15P almost 2 years now it really sounded great Crystal clear crisp and no problem at all pushing to the hi volume until LIMIT is displayed on the DSP you have to slide down your mixer so it wont diaplay the Limit again and thats it. Awesome speakers.

i went today to a Guitar Ctr and demo’d the MACKIE 15” against the EV 15” (which i use weekly at a club, for over a year now and do love the way they sound;) BUT .... i bought the MACKIES, in person they sound as good as the EV’s (but DO have more midrange - which can be dialed back on the DJ/mixer) and for the $100+ less (each) totally worth it, i’ve had a mackie mixing board since the 90’s that’s amazing so i am a fan of this brand anyway ..... this video TOTALLY doesn’t do the MACKIES justice!

It’s hard for me to agree with this. I have 3 sets of PA DJ Speakers, two QSC K12.2s, two recent Mackie Thumps, and lastly the EV ZLX 12BTs. The QSC K12.2s are cleaner overall, and have more head room. They can go well without a sub, but sound a little harsh without a treble cut, and the bass is too pronounced, so a slight cut is needed there too. The EVs sounded nicely balanced, also, on nights where I don’t strictly DJ, I do karaoke events and DJ in between. The EV sounds nice by default, but has a slight fuzz from the Class D amplifier. Lowering the limiter to -2 cleaned most of that up. Now I run them with the 18” EV EKX 18” sub with the cutoff set to 100 or 120. Either of these sounds beautiful. As mentioned, the headroom is much lower, but for a room of 150 or lower, that setup is perfect. The Mackie Thumps have more fuzz when someone is singing and there are silent moments in a song. Lowering the limiter doesn’t remove this at all. Also, the bass is more pronounced, and it’s not clean either. Lowering it still results in muddier highs. The only thing I use them for is as a floor monitor. I love to properly EQ mixes, and the Mackie doesn’t ever actually sound nice. Also, the build quality is lower. The EV and the Mackie aren’t even close to 1000 watts. The RMS of both are closer to 250 watts. Compared to the QSC, both limit more quickly playing the same songs. The difference is that the EVs sound clean and I can use them for live sound, plus, the DSP is excellent. I use the QSCs for wedding gigs, and bring the EVs out as back ups.
I have owned and used both models. I prefer the EV over the Mackie. It is a much flatter sound than the Mackie. The Mackie is too bassy for me. When I need to get loud and fill a large room, I add the EV EKX18sp (1300 watts). I set the cross over at 100 htz in each unit. I also own the ELX12p (wood cabinet) EVs. They sound better than the the ZLX12P, but not as loud. Not sure which is louder between the Mackie and the EV. I didn't like the Mackie tone as much. So I returned them without really pushing them. EV advertises the speaker at 1000 watts. When I had one of them serviced recently, I was told by the technician that the RMS output is only about 600 watts.
...ok I understand your problem when you recording. You are not sending a mono signal. That’s why sometime there is so much differences between both speakers. All in all the EV ZLX 12 seems clearer but a little bit less bass.
Good day Wilbert I'm a professional reggae DJ...I have ev all the way...you can play them loud for hours & don't have to worry about over hearing or clipping..& sound quality is excellent..

I have personally listened to both of these speakers side by side and the Mackie definitely sounds muffled compared to the EV. The EV is $100 more but well worth the money. The Mackie sounded ok by itself but then when you turn on the EV there was no comparison. EV sounded a lot clearer, much better sound quality.
@calebrabion

It's all on how you set your EQ. Any muffled sound is easily cleared up.
I use ev products and mainly zlx. Zlx is definitely a much cleaner sound. There is only one thing that isn't cool with them and that is they tend to lower themselves in volume after running 4 to 5 hours at loud volume. But the trick to use at Loud volume when it's truly time. A wedding is average 7 hours. So for 2 to 2.5 I run them at 40 percent then once ready to pump the party up I crank to 70 percent. Typically I use subs but some events don't require it. The DSP in my opinion does make a difference. The new 1300 watt mackie seems to have good low end but I feel the sound overall wasn't crisp. Sounded more flat toned in the vocals. The highs seemed to work higher when you did the test after you mentioned that the zlx has dsp. But obviously not being side by side I'd say both speakers will work for most type of gigs. For Live Sound though I'd go Ev. My two cents on this. Happy choosing fellow Djs and Entertainers. Ps...your videos are very informative and I have definitely learned alot. Thank you.
I can clearly hear the EVs are clearer/cleaner sounding and produce more bass therefore, worth the extra few bucks. Icing on the cake is that the ELXs 12Ps sound even better. IMO.
I feel that the room affects how the speaker on the left sounds comparing to the right speaker, its very similar to your other comparison video, where the left speaker from my point of view sounds better then the speaker on the right side..
I can say the EVs are an great speaker and they sound better than the Mackie in a side by side comp
Please show Presonus AIR series vs EV ZLX, their price is really close and division seems similar.
Buena comparación Electrovoice 👌🏾

It would help if the marketing sticker that is on the Mackie is removed so it is not partially blocking the tweeter...
The Mackies sound brighter in most of the demos...but they also have a hollow sound.

Thanks, Robin, Another excellent vid. Really appreciate these product comparisons, so informative. EVs win this one IMO. I have a pair of EV Zlx 15ps and they sound great, I use them for DJ and they fill a regular size function room with 100 people with ease. However, they clip v easy in club mode if you push them. you can get more volume in music mode before they clip. They also get hot as hell on a long night. You can smell them getting hot. I've considered buying two small fans to run behind them to keep them cool on a big night. Would love a video on Subs for the zlx 15ps. Can't afford to buy x2 EV Subs at the moment, so I'm wondering how budget subs would sound? Or would I be wasting my money, and better off saving up for the EV 18s? I don't play as many Big parties anymore, but I sometimes worry about my EVs clipping. I have some older 12" EV lxP that still do good, but they are heavier than my 15" ZLXPs!
I'm hearing better highs and clarity out of the EV

Go with the EVs, I’ve been using the ZLX 12ps since 2016, and recently switched them to the ZLX 12BT, which is the same speaker, but with Bluetooth. There was nothing wrong with the ZLX 12ps, I was just hoping that I could control them with my phone the way the way one of my EV ELX 18 subs can be controlled. You can save money by getting the regular model. You’re not missing anything with the Bluetooth one. Also, while the QSC K12.2s I have sound better, they also cost much more. If you get the EVs, get a sub and set the sub cutoff to 100 or 120hz, it’ll sound beautiful, and doing so will actually give you more headroom. That’s the best advice I can give you. They sound clean and I’ve DJing weddings with both my QSCs and my EVs. For crowds above 150, or larger halls, the EVs limit too soon, and you’d need either another one for reinforcement, or a set of speakers with more headroom. I have the Mackie Thumps as well, they aren’t reliable, nor do they sound clean. I wouldn’t trust them for a wedding gig. They don’t sound crisp even with careful EQ settings. They always sound muddy in the high range, and too pronounced in the lower range. There’s a class D amp in all of them, despite the price differences. The Mackie has the lowest quality one. The EVs need a hard limit of -1 or -2 on the DSP to remove some of the hiss, it never really goes alway on the Thumps, hence the price. On the QSCs, it’s almost not even there. The thing is, headroom aside, the EVs sound clean, and they’re reliable. Just get a sub and the padded covers, they dent very easily.
What was all the rum rumming? I didn't get any information out of that. Also, please announce which speaker you are testing when you test it as they look very similar. It will improve your videos.
Unfortunately you're not hearing the actual speaker. You're hearing the microphone reproducing the sound . A different microphone would give different results. Only the guy in this video is experiencing the true sound of both those speakers.

No hotter them any other speaker and if you play in side the limit of the speaker you should be good.
That is the only model I don't like because it has only 250w rms. I love the others EV. Between those 2 speakers Ev has more full sound. Mackie looks better for live music (guitar and vocals not band) and Ev for Dj's. In that range of price and quality my choice is Jbl 612.
EV has always been better, everybody knows that, the only reason I have the Thump 15" BST it's because EV did not have the Bluetooth available until September 2018 and I got the Mackie Thump on May 2018,🙄 bad luck, so I will probably put the ones I have for sale🤣🤣

The EV's sound much better in this video but watch out, it is a deceptive comparison. I tried both the EV's and Mackies in store and though the EV's sounded cleaner and clearer for rock and pop, their bass end couldn't handle hardcore EDM or dubstep, etc. It got very muddy very fast with the EV's. The Mackies can also get louder without clipping. So for a live band or rock/pop DJ, the EV's will win, but for EDM DJ's you want the mackies because the EV's just can't handle heavy bass. They sound horrible in the bass range. I suggest you listen to both in store before deciding.

I`ve had ZLX-12s for four years, and while they haven`t fried yet, I could probably cook an omelet on them when they heat up. Poor design, horrible ventilation, and their output compared to what they advertise is abysmal.

I don't know what it is, but Mackie always sound like they got a blanket over the speakers muffin the highs. I'll probably get me a set of EV'S someday
