1000 Miles on one S&B Tank of Fuel - Tow Rig Tech

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Now don't get me wrong I really like my 2013 Ford F250 Super Duty with the 6.7 Powerstroke Diesel engine but the one thing I absolutely hate about it is the tiny fuel tank. 26 gallons is not enough fuel when you are hauling as you average about 200 miles between fill ups. Well S&B tanks has the solution. A 56 gallon replacement S&B tank that goes in the stock location thus over doubling your fuel mileage without sacrificing bed space. Winning! So this time on Tow Rig Tech we are going to install this mega tank and show you how to reprogram your computer to adjust for it! I won't get into the whole S&B tanks vs Titan fuel tanks as they both seem to be quality products with good reviews. The 6.7 powerstroke fuel tank removal step is the hardest part as the vent and feed line on the sending unit can be a pain but after that is was smooth sailing for us. After installing this F250 replacement fuel tank I can tell you that S&B obviously knows what they are doing. I didn't get my truck all the way full but after some driving is said 873 miles to empty and stayed there for a long time so it is possible we can see as much as 1000 Miles to Empty on one tank! Let us know what we should do next in our pursuit for the ultimate tow rig build.
Here is the link to the tank as installed- amzn.to/3bSRXyH

Fuel capacity has never been a liming factor for me as far as stops when traveling are concerned. My wife's bladder is the limiting factor. So if I had a thousand gallon tank, I would still be stopping every two or so hours.

Nice! I installed the transfer flow 50 gallon in my 2012 6.7 years ago. Did in my driveway with basic tools and an atv jack to lower the old and raise the new tank. Had to lift up the rear end of the truck a little bit with my floor jack but it was all pretty straight forward and I saved a ton of money not having to pay someone else to do it. I used to have a 4.2 jaguar with twin tanks, one on each side, standard from the factory (3.2 and 3.6 models had a single) and it was wonderful for long trips. And back in the short lived fuel crisis 10-15 years ago I used it as a temporary tank for my 2 smaller cars. Just roll the jag between 2 fuel islands at the garage after waiting ages to get in, fill up both sides at once while dozens of people glared at me, then get home and empty it into the smaller (and much more fuel efficient!) cars while fuel was pricey Worth it just for the dirty looks I got 👌 sitting on the trunk with 2 gas handles into the back of it is a great feeling lol

Smart thing to have done is mark on the bed where the fuel pump is located. Cut out a section large enough for the fuel pump to be pulled out. Add a rim along the panel you cut out with a thin gasket glued to the rim and then screw the panel back into place. Then if the fuel pump fails in the future, which they inevitable do somewhere in the middle of no-place, you can easily replace the fuel pump with the tank full and in place.

The best I did was go from Rochester NY to Kearney NE before stopping. I was putting a 25 foot tongue trailer with around twelve thousand pounds. Went out with a fifth wheel RV last year. my dad's last truck was a 1998 f350 4x4 crew cab long bed with a 7.5l gas v8, 5-speed manual and factory high-capacity tow package, basically it was a dually without the dual rear wheels. but the ridiculous thing was the fuel tanks, it had 2-20 gallon tanks due to the rear suspension and no room to install bigger tanks so it had a 350 mile range. so we put a 120 gallon tank in the bed with a fill-rite pump system since that was much easier than trying to tap into ford's fuel system, modified the canopy on the truck with a sliding door on the driver's side so when the main tanks ran low you'd pull over and fill them back up in a few minutes. simple and sweet, and easily removable if the big tank wasn't needed for a long trip.

We just did one in my dads mega cab 16 ram 2500. The SB tank didn’t fit like it was supposed to . Apparently they didn’t R&D with the diesel. The 6” driveline (compared to 4” gas) oil the diesel interfered with the tank. They wanted to build a new one based on the fitment issue in his truck. They wanted us to give them measurements then wait for them to redesign and build a new one. Basically we would do the RD for them then pay full price for the tank after waiting weeks.........he returned it and bought a titan tank.

My '02 Powerstroke has the 39 gallon tank stock which I feel is plenty big. It's one of the things I love most about the truck. It gets 20 mpg when empty so in theory almost 800 miles range although I never drive it empty, I have a car for that. It lets me buy the cheapest fuel using the Gas Buddy app and it really does save a lot of money. I can cross a whole state that has expensive fuel and buy it in a cheaper state instead. My wife's bladder is also the limiting factor for range but we usually have the camper on the truck when she's in it so that means just stopping anywhere.

If you buy a truck bed fuel tank or like a Northern Tool fuel and tool calculate how much it weighs when it’s full and presumably sitting in the front of the bed, especially in a half ton or compact truck. 4 years ago I had 1000 pounds of sand bags in the very front of the bed of my Ranger Supercab and the frame bent a little bit on the left side between the cab and bed. The owners manual says to evenly distribute weight in the truck bed.
