@morla5558 I don't know much about Dreaming Spanish, but I think EasyFrench is a great option. I've watched some of their videos, and you can learn a lot from them. They speak at a reasonable pace, and it has subtitles. Personally, as I'm somewhere between B1 and B2 and I'm a native speaker of another romance language (Portuguese), I prefer podcasts intended for native speakers.

Keep up the great work man...really impressed with what you've accomplished so far and I'm excited to see what the future has in store for you with this language. Based on your speaking and comprehension I would say that you're in the perfect space to start speaking with a tutor or language exchange partner for conversation practice. You're definitely moving in the right direction. I have a bit more than a couple years of Spanish under my belt and it;s gotten to the point where it's pretty easy therefor now I;m working on Portuguese as a beginner and watching your content is super exciting because I know I'll be having these experiences and revelations again soon. Keep it up! EDIT: I stand corrected, I just saw your iTalki lesson that you posted. Keep it up, homie.

From someone of whom spent my first 2K hours with almost solely CI, I strongly regret not spending enough time in native material from way earlier on. CI is fantastic and it's a mescal between study and immersion but it's a bit artificial. At the beginning and intermediate levels CI is more important but native content and series are closer to real speech than anything else except immersing in a Spanish speaking country. There's a huge gulf between the most advanced CI materials and native real speaking. I have probably 4K hours contact with Spanish since 2020 and I'm having to play catch up with listening to native shows. The most advanced CI materials I can listen even distracted and have near 100% comprehension. But shows are still a frustrating up hill battle. So really keep up with native content even if it's frustrating and hard. It's a different domain of listening comprehension than CI where the whole idea of a nice systematic transition to the next stage goes out the window.

Thanks for the comment. I have really been trying to immerse myself in as much native content as possible, I think this is definitely the stage I am at now. I now have a bunch of spanish speaking youtubers I enjoy watching in my spare time.

It's really interesting to hear how a language is acquired with CI.

Keep it up! Funny you mention that about podcasts; I've been listening to Spanish Podcasts while walking the dog for years (Jordi Wild Project is my go to) and often I just tune out. Then I remember I did the same in English podcasts. Its just really hard to focus on them period, so you're probably getting half the value out of them, but I think its important to always have your ear in Spanish whenever you can.

I would do Spanish vlogs maybe! Like connect with a few friends that will incentivize you speak Spanish together or in public. This will keep the style of videos similar but add more variety into the content. Like maybe a POV of meeting a friend for coffee and speaking only spanish. Great content so far! Good to hear your progress

I was just watching a video on TikTok about comprehensible input 😂

So I know the whole idea of comprehensible input is not having to study grammar stuff but I think even having your Italki person correct some of your grammar mistakes would help you a lot. Conjugations are like the most important thing in Spanish so It’s important to know the basics at least. You can just start with learning the present, present progressive, and past. You’ll find that there are even patterns to the irregular verbs and in no time you’ll be able to conjugate brand new verbs in all tenses without even thinking. Like I said you can have your teacher correct you or just look up conjugation charts and you can go from there. Obviously you’ve seen and heard the conjugated forms of the verbs it’s just a matter of using them. In terms of understanding native content, it will come with time. I never used dreaming Spanish, but if I had to guess everyone speaks clearly and maybe even at a reduced unnatural speed. No one talks like that in the real world, so it will take a while for your brain to get used to the speed and not having everything perfectly enunciated with crystal clear audio. When I first started watching native content after learning Spanish for 8 years in school, I barely understood anything despite knowing 90% of the words once I looked at the subtitles. But after lots of hours it finally just clicked and my brain was processing the Spanish with no issue. All this is a long way of saying you’re doing great and I hope you stick with it. It will be worth it.

Also once you do start going to native content, pick a country and have the majority of the content you watch be from the country. It’ll make things easier in the future.

Thanks for all this advice. I really apprecaite the effort put into the comment. As of now I am only watching native content since I feel like I can understand enough. We will see where this takes me in the next few months. I am also open to learning some grammar down the track, maybe after I have given native content a go for 6 months or so (since I’m not in a rush to become fluent). Let me know what you think of this.

@@Lukelearnsspanish So I think continuing to watch native content is perfectly fine, but I don’t think you should wait 6 months to look into grammar. As you continue with the native content the grammar concepts may come naturally, but right now you need to clean up the basic stuff and learn some rules to follow so you can communicate effectively. If you do Italki lessons frequently or have a partner that speaks Spanish, you should be able continue without too much dedicated time on grammar, as long you get feedback Think about how as kids we never memorized all the grammar rules in English but we know them because we were corrected when we made mistakes. This is what you need most right now. It seems like you have great listening comprehension and you have the vocabulary to express yourself, you just need someone to make sure you’re putting it all in the right order and conjugating verbs properly. If you won’t continue to have access to someone giving you feedback, the next best thing would be KZread teachers. You can find lessons completely in Spanish on all the grammatical concepts from basic to advanced. So while you wouldn’t get feedback, you’d get lots of examples, comprehensible input, and a guide for correcting your own Spanish. Of course that’s not as interesting as talking to a person but it’s much better than nothing. You’re at 1000+ hours so I know you’ve heard people conjugate plenty of verbs and create sentences it’s just a matter of doing it properly yourself now!

You can just say mejor. I was on a date with a Latina last night and said “mucha mas mejor” and she looked at me crazy and corrected it. We gotta get that active output in too.

Nice Luke. How do you feel about the accent? Are you aiming to sound native ? I was talking to a bilingual friend who learned Spanish late in life that he feels like he is like an “actor” and can mirror the Spanish accent but has to allow himself to “play the part” of a Spanish speaker and it flows easily / sounds very natural but had to get used to faking it

Thanks for the comment Chris. In regards to accent, I am really not too sure what I would like to do with it. I think for now my aim is to just keep getting better at understanding and speaking and getting this to a high level before taking on an accent. Ideally I would like to travel to somewhere in South America one day for an extended period of time, maybe this could be where I am able to pick up an accent potentially. However on the whole I am not too fussed on sounding like a native, I just want to be able to express myself fluently.

14:39 yes, that's totally true. I've studied english for 8 years and I feel like a total beginner when I listen to rap music because I can't understand a single word they say y lo mismo se pasa con el español, nunca entiendo lo que dicen en canciones porque el español tampoco es mi lengua materna. I guess I'll never understand music in other languages lol

Yeah music can be really tough for language learners

Its funny that you mention that you couldn't remember the English word for Onion right away because even though I'm only upto 360hr CI (In less than 3 months though of starting CL with Dreaming Spanish) Right after one of my 5 hours sessions of watching Dreaming Spanish videos I turned on my TV and the first sentence the person spoke on whatever show it was I couldn't understand a word. That wouldn't be too weird but the show was in English 😆 Sometimes my mind is so tuned into listening to Spanish that there can be a slight lag of a few seconds before my mind switches back to my native English. My levels right now it where I can understand most intermediate video's well but sometimes I can hear the same set of words and understand them right away then another time I come across the words and forget what they mean. Im guessing thats just a consequence of the context words are used in and the fact that my brain is still getting used to the language and is slowly moving some Spanish words to the same part of the brain my English words are stored but others are still in the learning part or the brain, if that makes sense? I can kind of experience that because some newer words sometimes get translated to English before I understand them in context and others my mind just knows. Anyway, thanks for making these videos. They are very informative and help those of us who are not at your level yet to give us an idea of what to expect which also helps keep us motivated 👍

Thanks for the comment Paul, your support is much appreciated. In regards to not being able to understand certain words at times and then at other times be able to understand them fine, this will likely go away once you have put more hours in. It sounds like you are doing very well for someone on 360 hours of input, but it is good to remember that you are not even half way to getting a really good grasp on the lanaguge. In the mean time I would recommend to just continue to take the language in as you are already doing and enjoy the process.

@@SeanRandal Thanks for the comment. I really don't know much about grammar at all, accoridng to Pablo this should all come together at some point during the CI journey. Also in regards to my previous comment that was written in Spanish, please note I get google translate to help me out with these, writing is something I have never really done in spanish and is not my main priority right now (speaking and understanding is), so I look for some assistance with this aha. Just want to be as transparent as possible with everyone on my level of spanish.

Keep it up. What Spanish accent are you learning? The accent, in many ways, dictates some of the intricacies of your learning materials. For example, if you are learning a Caribbean accent, then it would be more beneficial to invest time in understanding reggaeton than if you are learning the Spaniard accent because you'll need to know to understand how we cut our words.

@12:00 I've been learning spainsh for 3 months and that happened to me ... I forgot how to spell salad so I had to type the spainsh word and translate it lol. Once in a while I start typing in spanish by accident too.

Congrats on 1000 hours! While learning Spanish, have you struggled with your brain translating the comprehensible input to English while listening to Spanish? It's something that happens to me, and even if I understand the spoken Spanish I miss a lot of what's being said afterwards due to the translation happening. I'm wondering how long until that stops happening 😂

In terms of translations, I find that when I speak I may need to translate in my head (I pressume this will go away once I get better at speaking) however for listening I very rarely need to translate now, it comes pretty naturally.

Hey my guy, great progress. I think you could use some pronoucation practice. Check out the technique called shadowing. You can do it with any audio. I shadowed a lot of Rafa Nadals speeches to sound more native.

Reggaeton is a minefield mate, they speak broken Spanish. If you want clear understandable lyrics, Mexican hip hop is the best option imo. Look up kinto sol, akwid, tren lokote.

It’s more like poetry and street Spanish It’s grammatically correct and good for advanced learners I have around 1700 hours and it’s just becoming useful for learning now for me

los 1000 son una estimación ya que dejé de contar alrededor de las 400 horas. Pero estoy muy seguro de que habría trabajado al menos 1000 horas.

1,000 is a lot, but the website does say 1,500 for near native, so the website says you still need almost half the time you've already put into it, so you're doing great!

Trust me 1500 hours aren’t enough to reach near native level, you’ll probably be able to speak at a B2 level approximately, it also depends a lot what your native language is obviously.

@@morla5558 I'm just stating what the website says. My girlfriend is from Mexico and took an English test and passed as B2. I can talk to her and tell her jokes; she almost always understands. True, it may not be near native, but it's still cool. I'm at only 32 hours, so I can't imagine being able to just understand another language. It's going to feel like a huge accomplishment for me.

Yeah I know you are stating what the website says I just don't want you to get your hopes up too much because your level of a language depends on many things. From my experience I can understand english pretty well since I started consuming english content 3 years ago, and in the meantime I also watched I would say close to a 1000 hours of spanish content. I'm Italian so to me spanish is way easier to learn compared to an english native speaker. I've been living in spain for 2 months now and a lot of people are suprised when I tell them I've been acquiring spanish for just over a year. But still speaking english is pretty difficult for me and my spanish is obvioulsy far from perfect. I've just started acquiring japanese also.

I think the best way to start would be through Dreaming Spanish Superbeginner videos, there are plenty of these available for free on there youtube channel. Also might be a good idea to research how the method works. Good luck and keep us updated how you go.

There’s only 38 hours worth of SuperBeginner?? Definitely watch beginner, you can filter by “easy”. Some people say only to learn via DS but I don’t agree at all. Gain vocabulary outside of it too.

I just switched to the beginner videos when I ran out of superbeginner. You can sort by difficulty (some of Pablo's are more difficult - Andrea and Augustina are easiest for me), or if those are even too hard you can rewatch some of the superbeginner ones

I would either just re watch super beginner videos or just move onto the beginner videos and stick by the method. As time progresses you will start to understand the concept of the videos. Even though this may feel a bit strange you do have to just trust the progress.

Have you tried sorting beginner videos by easy? Do that and if it’s still too hard just rewatch superbeginner videos for like 10 hours

where do we find 1000 hours of comprehensible input? I am approximately at the A2 level. I would LOVE to do the 1000 hours of comprehensible input challenge however I am having trouble finding comprehensible material that is interesting. I have thought about another way to do this. But I'd like to hear others thoughts on this idea. My idea is to simply ignore the "level" (although ignoring the level kind of goes against comprehensible input theory but whatever), and simply find a film that I've seen a lot because I really like it.....then view it once again to freshen my experience with it, then find the spanish dubbed version and watch is over and over and over. Maybe first just watching it, then with subtitles and continue watching it repeatedly. Like to the tune of 100 times. My thoughts are that now the vocabulary within the film will become my vocabulary and the same with the grammar and structures contained within the sentences in the film....listening comprehension, etc etc etc. Does anyone have thoughts on that?

I like the idea and I am sure it would work with some extent. However I think going through easier content (which can usually be quite boring) is part of the process. For me some days of the beginner and intermidate videos simple felt like work but not fun, however now I get the reward of watching native content that I enjoy. Regardless good luck with everything and keep us updated if you go through with the technique above.

I am going to watch Coco en español as my film I watch repeatedly but also during the same timeframe, I would like to find A2 level comprehensible input and use that as well. It is easy to purchase A2 graded readers for a kindle but I've noticed that reading/writing are (for me at least) completely different than listening comprehension and speaking. (in fact, listening comprehension and the ability to spontaneously verbally speak might also be two separate things) Do you have any suggestions on where to find specific levels (such as A2, B1, B2 etc) comprehensible input? Does Spanish Dreaming offer comprehensible input categorized into various levels?

@@chandie5298 I've heard a lot of learners say reading is good input, but the words you learn from text then have to be heard a few times to basically be "activated" for listening comprehension. For this reason, I know some learners will read a book as text and then listen to the audiobook version after - or sometimes read and listen at the same time. Something to think about anyway. Oh and as a user of Dreaming Spanish, yeah they have it broken up in to levels, but they're not A1, A2, etc. It goes Superbeginner, Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced.
