1000 AD: How Did People Survive In Anglo-Saxon Britain? | 1000 AD | Timeline

While we are preoccupied with global warming and computer meltdown, our surprisingly sophisticated Anglo-Saxon ancestors were terrified of Viking invasion.
Britain's system of social welfare, law and order and a yearning for knowledge had made us the envy of Europe - and a country under threat from violent and oppurtunistic raiders. But what was it really like to live just before the end of the first millennium? 1000 AD recreates life circa 999 AD, showing the everyday lives, loves and passions of the Anglo-Saxon people. A soap opera-style drama runs alongside interviews with leading historians who paint a revealing picture of the political and social structure of pre-Norman Britain.

I love the little tidbits of information thrown in there, I’ve learned something that no one else talks about. Like the fact that they had combs and law in a village was basically just a neighbourhood watchman. This is a great documentary, the experts say what need to be said and then a developing scene afterwards that leads right into the next little tidbit of information. Very well done, I wish more history docs would follow this example.

Fine tooth combs were useful to remove lice, dirt, ticks, and distribute hair oil. There are a lot of graves from this time period, where people were buried with their combs. That must say something about how much they valued cleanliness and grooming.

And it shows. Back in those days there were a lot of 'immersive reenactments of the past'. They even had reality shows, where people would live like people in the middle ages or colonial times. I remember one scene where this so called pilgrim woman saw 'natives' for the first time and her son wanted to go say "hi!" and she held him back:"NO!We do not know who they are! They might be dangerous!" Really, lady? There's cameras all around you and those 'natives' are mexican actors. In one season they even got a visit from Oprah. Kathy Griffin did a bit about that in her comedy show. I miss the late nineties! Actually...those reality shows were from the early 2000s. I remember watching them when I lived abroad. I was young and beautiful then.

@@christianjust2654 Well, The Anglo-Saxons actually not just came from modern Germany and Denmark but from the Netherlands where the Frisians came from. The migration of "Anglo-Saxons" comprised in four groups: the Angles (who came from the southern part of Denmark), the Jutes (Northern Danish), Saxons (North-West part of Germany), and the Frisians (Northern part of the Netherlands). So, it actually makes somewhat sense if someone today who speaks Flemish or modern Frisian in the Netherlands could actually understand a bit of Old English due to the close relationship with each other both in history and language.

Invariably, those who know nothing about chopping wood will put a piece on a chopping block and take a mighty swing at it with the axe. If you have wood to chop, you would learn to take smaller chops at weaker points of the block. Conserving energy is a survival quality. Same thing with carrying water. Those of us who have actually had to move buckets of water have learned that carrying two smaller buckets is much easier than carrying one large bucket. Again, conserving energy.....

The wood chopping example rings true. I live in lake country and depend on firewood to supply much of the heat. At first, I used to expend a great deal of effort trying to muscle my way through uncooperative wood. After having lived in a rural setting for a few years, I get far more firewood split now on a fraction of the energy. I let the axe do most of the work, and I let the wood show me where and when it wants to split. You don't fight nature; you learn how to work with it. Another thing I learned is not to rush. Think things through carefully and you will discover the easiest and safest ways to get things done.

It was really worth watching. As for sound mixing...I used to own a Dollar General copy of Sweeney Todd that made the dialogue sound like whispers but when the music played...BOOM!!! Compared to that this was fine. This has Historical accuracy & good narrative, in my opinion. And I believe that to be most important.

Alcoholic drinks used to be diluted with water, so the alcohol content was low. People didn't want to get drunk.
