    True. Only dancers and prostitutes would have worn a dress showing the knees. Also, let's take a look at the face: It went wild at the time as it had only recently been allowed and became trendy. She should have more blush, her eyebrows should be much darker and longer down to the sides. The pear necklace was common but the hairstyle? Also, she could have had a hat on top - especially the girl before her representing the 1910s. They had ridiculously extravagant hats, huge and decorated with feathers or even an entire dead exotic bird.

    The 1920s gown was too short...it “crept up to the knee”, meaning the absolute shortest they got (unless you were a dancer or a prostitute) was just below the knee-and that was definitely not the norm, only for the famous flapper movement, but it wasn’t widespread.The model’s dress was above her knees.

  • @takocos

    @takocos

    6 жыл бұрын

    There's actually an economic reason for this. Most people wear tights/pantyhose under their skirts if they're short, knee highs if they're long, and socks if they're really long. Skirts are fairly long-wearing, that is, they can withstand many wearings and washings without becoming so torn and worn out that they need to be replaced. But the undergarments are thinner and tend to wear out quickly. If you wear a long skirt, you can hide the parts of the hosiery that tend to wear out the most and replace them less. Holes tend to form in the joints, like the knee, and along the seam that joins the crotch. You'll notice that oftentimes when skirts get longer, so does footwear- this is also to save on the hosiery! There's actually a whole thing about this and how when the economy and political climate get bad, skirts get longer and clothes less form-fitting, and there are lots of suggestions for why that may be. It is cheaper to dress like that, but it might not all be financial. Some of it may be about fashion changing to reflect fear. When people are afraid of things, they tend to wear clothes that are loose and cover more of their body- perhaps for the same reason that when people are scared they tend to hide under blankets. There's a psychological component to it.

    They wouldn't wear that much makeup in the 1910s, if not any. Also, the skirts of the 1920s were way longer than right below the knee. Most were still mid-calf or longer. Skirts didn't start rising up a lot until the late 50s and early 60s. You guys really need to do more research.

    Don’t know if anyone commented this but the 1910s dress was not the first time a dress showed a woman’s ankle. Working class women back all throughout the 1700s had to make the hemline up to 1 3/4” above the ankle to avoid the petticoats ans dresses dragging in the mud and getting dirty.
