Lately I've been seeing you catch more lures than fish but you got me hooked on these videos and I can watch from beginning to end. Spring is coming up fast out here in California so I'm hoping for good fishing soon.

It’s always nice to find fishing gear. I spend quite a bit of time intentionally hunting for lost fishing gear when my local lake draws down in late summer or fall. I’ve retrieved pounds of lead that I re-melt and cast into new jigs and sinkers. I find that a fair bit of the soft plastics are usable once cleaned and allowed to dry out for some time, usually a few weeks and the plastics that are not good can often be remelted after cleaning and allowed to dry over several months. Metal spoons and blades, especially brass can often be polished out. I repaint those hard baits that are too worn to use as is. I polish clear diving bills using 1K to 2K wet/dry sandpaper and plastic polish and a rotary tool. Don’t discount spinnerbaits, buzz baits and chatter baits that have hooks that are too corroded to use as is. I’ve successfully installed new hooks by cutting off part of the existing hook and using heat make a loop for adding an open eye hook to the bait. If you’re careful you won’t melt the lead. Sometimes I have to cut some of the lead off of the shank area below the head to expose good metal and I do re-temper and anneal the loops I make in the metal. This does mean that you’ll have a free moving hook instead of a fixed one (which so far actually seems beneficial and doesn’t seem to negatively effect hook up ratios) and there won’t be any retainers for soft plastic trailers, but they work fine for me. I’ve caught fish on such modified lures that otherwise would have gone to scrap for the lead. I have not been able to do this with jigs however. If the hooks are gone on those I simply wash and usually am able to re-use the skirts and melt the lead heads to make new ones. Great video. Finding free fishing gear is always a good time especially when the fishing isn’t good because of water conditions.

The fly you found is actually called a “streamer” mostly for pike in the netherlands when it is colder weather, because you can fish it very slow.

What do you do, with everything you find? I know you say “ new hooks and into the tackle box” but do you ever actually use them? Would be a fun video! Catching fish on lures you’ve found and repaired.

I do it in several areas of lakes that get lowered. Popular fishing areas with rocks are the best for me. My cousins do it on the ocean and look in the rocks at popular fishing locations at low tide.

The little o ring that attaches the hooks to the bait , rusts before the hooks . You put new o rings and hooks and voila

With the exception of stainless steel, hooks, even high quality hooks, rust rather quickly. I find many lures with the split rings still attached but the hooks are gone. To illustrate this I have retrieved lures I lost weeks to months prior and the hooks are often corroded rather severely. More than once I’ve lost a lure and gone back the following week and retrieved them and even within one week’s time the hooks have already begun to corrode.
