That “Grow Your Own Smoke” ad @ 2:01 was _definitely_ manipulated, haha.

I knew they weren't growing only harmless tobacco.
I vividly remember a "Car and hot Blonde Girl"-type ad from the 1980s where the girl, leaning against the red car, wore a t-shirt that declared: "I'LL GIVE YOU MOST VALUE FOR MONEY!" (no, I'm not kidding!) 😄
My dad got my mom a coffee maker for christmas one year . She hit him in the head with it ! Last time that happened !

A rather extreme reaction. Your mom must have followed the teachings of Gloria Steinem far too literally.
I miss those ads, they're funny and lighthearted as well as real. Love them.
At the time that Gay Boy ad appeared, the word gay meant happy, not homo.

In the late 60’s we still used the word ‘gay’ to mean happy and cheerful.
@IngenerateIngenue
4 ай бұрын
It still does mean ‘happy’ ‘jolly’ but it’s also used to described someone who is attracted to the same sex. In the UK in the 90’s and 2000’s ‘gay’ was also a term used by mainly teens and meant something was ‘not fun’ or was ‘silly’. 😄

When my mother tried to explain to my elderly grandmother that my male roommate was gay. "Well of course he is!" She chortled. Um. Lack of communication. She was puzzled why I lived with two men.

Things you never hear a woman say: "You got me jewellery for my birthday? I was so hoping for a steam & dry iron."
I remember seeing these in old magazines and such. My first instinct was...."WTF?" as a very small child. My dad's response "You're being oversensitive." Preeeeeeety sure I wasn't.

The ads were appropriate for their time. Not saying they were ok but that was the culture back then. Imagine if an ad from today was shown to people back then what their reaction would be?

They were never appropriate. People are now better educated & stand up for their rights.

Definitely NOT. Equality & diversity is progressive; look at other countries and faiths & how some still suppress women and girls and view being gay as a criminal offence, punishable by death.

I found so many of these ridiculous and offensive 🤮
@IngenerateIngenue
4 ай бұрын
To be offended is subjective. I wasn’t offended by them because they are historic however, if this type of blatant sexism existed in today’s advertising the business would go broke.
These vintage ads are pretty offensive!
What men don't like about women, 2000s.
I was a girl child in the late 50s & early 60s when many of these first appeared and were NOT opposed by the culture of the time. Still crawling from the wreckage. A full time dose of this sh**t did a number on my head, not funny at all! The young men of my generation were poisoned too, which explains the rate at which we got divorced. Women finally got smart, men didn't keep up.
There's nothing wrong with any of these ad's. There's much wrong with people today at too many levels to name.
