Strange sounds like a mom trying to make her shy kid be more social. "oh, look, Neil Gaimon is over there! Don't you want to play with him?"
On messaging manners: don't private message people to just say hi if you haven't been following someone a while. It's just mildly uncomfortable and feels like bot behavior. Say something funny or weird if you wanna chat. But when I get "hi"s from blogs I've never interacted with, I am immediately on guard.

@@tallymebanana8918 I mean, it's not all unprompted messages. Like, the trick is to sound like a person. Talk about a common interest or a specific post. But people trying to hit you with malware links would make bots to start conversations and send the links, and when people got suspicious of messages from Jenny who needs beta testers for her game [link here], they got the bots to just say hi first, then give the spiel to anyone who answered. So unsolicited "hi"s started feeling invasive and weird. Meanwhile shitposting in someone's inbox remains largely ok.
@ChibiChidorii

Yea if they are not mutuals you can start the conversation by saying something like "Hi, I saw you posted x" or "I see you like x" and start from there. Just "Hi" feels like a bot or a weirdo. I feel like back in the day (2010 ish) just saying hi was normal because the big social media was Facebook and there you had to send requests and accept them, so the person already acknowledged that you existed so we got used to that kind of interaction. But with Twitter and Instagram being about following people you don't know it has become kinda creepy unless you are replying to something else they posted

Exactly! You should be allowed to be anonymous and cringe and explore your identity and interests safely on the net. I have always loved tumblr because you can curate your experience so much and its been really frustrating the new users using Blaze to spread hot girl selfies when I so carefully avoid that aspect of social media. So yes, I have blocked every sexy e girl and bikini cosplay streamer that's blazed posts onto my dash and I will continue to do so.

Yeah a lot of blazed content looks like people trying to treat tumblr like instagram. I guess those blogs exist but it certainly doesn’t feel on brand 😆
Here's some more additional "dos" and "donts" of blazing that I've noticed from looking at comments on the blazed posts on my dash. Along with joke posts, photos of pets and promotion of your small business/etsy shop/art commission posts are generally accepted uses of blaze. On the other hand stuff for very specific fandoms, especially shit like erotic fanfiction should be left in the tags. You don't control who sees your blazed posts and most of the time people aren't too keen to have that pop up unprompted, most egregious of all if it's not contained in a 'read more'. Likewise you probably shouldn't be paying to put anything that might be considered triggering onto strangers dashes, not that I've seen too much of that but still it feels like it bares mentioning. Lastly if you're blazing a thirst trap selfie prepare to get dunked on hard. Tumblr isn't Instagram, it's the anonymous gay wizard site. Your mileage may vary and some people just hate the concept of blaze in general so they might be rude regardless, but just ignore them because if you want to pay like $10 show me your cat I'm all for it.

I rejoined, made a warrior cats blog, and now it’s wayyy more chill. I’m autistic and my teenage self needed this 10 years ago when I wanted to start using tumblr. I was just so overwhelmed and didn’t know any of the rules/norms
Another big thing with tagging fandom posts and stuff, is that it can be worth investigating fandom specific practices before making and tagging original posts. This can be a functional thing, such as the case of the transformers fandom not really using the "transformers" tag and instead using "maccadams" because the "transformers" tag was overrun with Bay Movie gifs, and its just a practice that's stuck around. It can also be seen as rude to improperly tag things even if they might seem related to you. An example of this being the "minecraft" tag vs the "mcyt" tag, where its considered very poor ettiquette to tag stuff only related to mcyt with the word "minecraft" because it spams the tag for people who are just interested in the game. Those are two big examples but yeah, its always good to lurk a bit before you start posting to get the general sub-culture specific vibes. Just please give yourself a profile picture.

Oh my God. I'm a longtime tumblr user and you just made me realise I had "use blog colors when viewing blogs" turned on, which defaults to a white background for posts. I can't read on white backgrounds and it was making view-mode-only posts inaccessible to me. I even complained about it lol. Checking your parameters every now and then is truly a lifesaver.

DNIs (and Carrds?) seem to be genuinely quite popular with younger tumblr users, current or recent teens, esp. if they’re deep in some weird highly specific tumblr discourse wars. Anyway, great video, very needed because tumblr culture is a bit inaccessible to new members.

Two additional tips for new tumblrinas: 1) Make a tag for your own posts and make it something distinct (i.e. not just #my posts or smth like that). If you're using tumblr the way most people do, your blog will be 99% reblogs, so having a tag for your own posts makes it infinitely easier to find them. I use "#[distinct alias] speaks" but you can use a variation of that or even just your url. 2) If you're addicted to seeing your interaction numbers go up, get help, but also jumping on popular shit as soon as physically possible (like the day of and no later) is a really good way to get a lot of notes very quickly. I have like 900ish followers, and my usual posts maybe get 5 notes on a good day. But my two biggest posts, one being about that one really popular bill wurtz video whose title i can't remember and the other being about Dracula Daily, each got me something like 20,000+ notes in like two days. I don't know if it would apply to new TV shows or movies, but I can attest that posting about really recent internet phenomena (tenfold for tumblr events like Dracula Daily, Goncharov, or the Welcome to Flavortown banner) *and tagging it appropriately* is an easy way to get notes and followers. It doesn't even have to be comedy gold. Just say something like "Jonathan Harker hate paprika but like vampire? WEIRD!" on May 4th, 2022, and you'll get so many followers and notes about the McElroys in no time.

This makes me want to give Tumblr another try. It's kinda funny but somehow a lot of these rules seem very familiar to me even though I've never actively used Tumblr. I think it's mostly because Deviantart and other tumblr-associated fandoms and sites had similar vibes going on. Like I always thought it was so bizarre when everyone started using their real names on the internet on like Instagram and KZread and stuff, it's just off somehow and I definitely feel the "not everyone needs to be an influencer" thing, I do treat most of my sites that way where I just follow and unfollow whoever if I like or dislike their content.

Here's the way I actually use likes on tumblr! I keep them locked and on private so nobody can see them and then like things I want to refer to later. When I used to read a lot of fanfiction on tumblr I would like different blog's masterposts so I could keep all of that in one place. Nowadays I typically like drawing references and writing prompts so they're easy to refer to without having to scroll through my whole blog. I know it might sound a little insane but it really helps me keep my shit organized!

I recommend you to make a second blog purely for this; reblogg everything you want to refer to later to the second blog, tag everything in categories (for example "drawing-ref") and go absolutely wild on the number of tags you're using (the more the marrier to find the references faster again), make a master post containing all your tags and use it as a summary/easy access; it's way faster to find everything again at a later point if you've tagged everything properly. no need to scroll through hundreds of likes to find whatever you're looking for - and if you still can't find what you're looking for the archive could help you, too

I used to call Tumblr unsocial media for the sheer reason that was talked about how you aren't there for people. You're there for content and no one will care about follows
26:51 For my fellow socially anxious people: I used to do something like this before, adding my compliments of the post into the reblog description rather than the tags. As far as feedback, no one ever told me to stop, or indicated that I was wrong. No one overtly took it badly (idk what they were thinking, but I didn't get any messages). I don't anymore because I find the tagging format more freeing, but it's really not serious. One thing I love about Tumblr is that no one's really harassing you for not picking up on social cues (at least, not in the fandoms I'm in). So, it's not really something to worry about. You can just look at what others do and decide what you want to do. (It *is* probably important to note that I'm only part of small fandoms, so most posts don't get many reblogs in the first place. Idk what larger fandoms are like about this.)
as a jessica who regularly reblogs anime boys, I felt like you were speaking DIRECTLY to me at 17:00 oh my lordt
This came at the perfect time. I've been wanted get on tumblr because of the twitter nonsense, but it's seemed kind of intimidating. Like you're at a new school and you're hanging out with some people that have been friends forever and you just feel kinda out of place and don't belong. Tumblr does seem to have a sort of late-00s early-10s internet culture that I've really missed.
Recently I've seen some indie vtubers advertising themselves on blaze because they were coming over from Twitter but most if not all the notes were bullying them and telling them to kys, it was heartbreaking

The Julius Cesar thing is because it’s the ides of March. So it’s less of a tumblr thing than a general Shakespeare thing. A lot of drama clubs and theater groups will have parties and/or readings of Julius Cesar on that day. Tumblr is just full of theater nerds so it’s more visible there than most places outside of theater.
Some people use likes as a stash for "reblog later" posts! Also you can hide your "following" and "likes" pages from other people and I recommend doing so. You don't owe people your private stuff. Also I tend to turn off endless scrolling and not use themes that use that because it tends to crash the browser tab after a while.

I like this advice, I wanna add using browser add ons like XKit are recommended for having good experiences. Also highly important to remember that Tumblr's main base that never left is very much aging. I see posts about the most mundane, real-life shit that have like 200k+ notes every day. I reblogged a post the other day asking about everyone's favorite kitchen appliances, and I gave my honest answer in the tags (an electric kettle for me, I genuinely love those things). That's the kinda of stuff that goes viral pretty often on Tumblr now. Thank you for this. I was inspired to sign up for Tumblr because I wanted a social media platform where anyone who says "unalived" is mercilessly mocked, and I was struggling with some of the finer points of the etiquette and culture.
Another tip: batch tagging! If you need to add tags to old posts, you can use the Mass Post Editor on desktop. A lifesaver when you are 2K posts in and realize you wish you had a cohesive tagging system (or if you want to delete certain things, but Tumblr users typically don't delete stuff in my experience)
As someone who’s used tumblr consistently for quite a while now, the concept of tagging the username of non-anon asks has never occurred to me even though I’ve definitely seen other people do it and I’m going to start doing that now bc it’s such a good idea! Now that going into the settings and blocking tags is a thing: DO IT! Don't be afraid to do it and just add what you dont want to see like triggers, ships, specific media, etc. Also good thing to note is maybe going through your following tags and updating those so you don't get recommendations from tags in stuff your not really into anymore, giving this advice I have yet to do so. Honestly I've been on this hellsite since 2014 (I got locked out of my first Tumblr blog tho sadly) and learned so much.
I think the best way to build up your dash and curate it is to go wild following people, just click the button with extremely low standards. And then over the coming week/month be super generous with the unfollow button. Then youll probably have lots of people who survived the purge and ur dash will never be boring. Also a great way to learn about niche internet drama that will never affect anyone irl
