It is the case only since 2004. It comes from the USA and the UK trying to justify the invasion of Irak to their people. Since France opposed this invasion in the UN, their heavy propaganda, mostly in the USA, ended up saying "France doesn't want to support us in Irak because they are the cowards who surrendered in WWII". It was about bringing discredit to a country that had quite possibly the largest diplomatic network in the world, and opposed a war waged for the sake of stealing oil for private corporations' interests. This is why the globalisation of the english language is one of the worst curses this world was inflicted with. Because even you ended up biting on their lies. This language is a massive vector for them to spread propaganda and rewriting History.

That's pretty much that. But truth be told, we have been invaded much more often than the other way around. From the early Middle Ages to the 1st Hundred Years War. From the Habsbourgs Empire to the 2nd Hundred Years War (both against the UK). From 1871's provocation by Bismark, to the World War in 1914, and then, to the 2nd Schlieffen plan in 1940. We always had 2 empires plotting against us, oftentimes together: the UK and the various forms of Germany. I guess that almost half of our victories are against these 2.

What basically happened is that their name changed and so did their form of government. On the other hand, the Confederates were just pro-slavery revolutionaries who successfully declared their independence from the United States, meaning that the Confederates technically weren't Americans as the Confederation was a different entity from the United States.

I really like the method you used, because it's honestly hard to quantify this kind of thing (as you say, it would be unfair to put England AND Scotland into a lump before they unified, so you had to pick England for obvious reasons) France, we love you, you are our greatest rival. Well done. And America, that's an impressive record for someone who hasn't been around long, but then you did get born into a time of heavy upheaval.

Whilst fighting the Italian invasion in second world war a French machine gun squad of three or so men caused over 3,000 casualties in a single battle. The French aren’t cowards, if anything they’re idiots for believing Erwin Rommel and surrendering thinking they had already been defeated. It’s really just a weird clusterfuck and the Nazi’s getting “lucky”. Germany is the country with some of the worst history and losses yet still look good doing it. In WW2, Germany took ridiculous risks and it somehow worked basically.

Doavkkan le Fou exactly. Scotland was one of the 2 legal predecessors to Britain, the other being England, and so their battles should be counted alongside England.

People often talk badly of Swedish military, and ten years ago, that was valid, but they often don't know about Sweden being one of the most powerful empires (in terms of battles won and how tough the opponents were, and innovating modern warfare) in history, and don't know about their modern Special Forces. That being said, France is epic.

Julius Caesar is the one that conquered the future French area of Europe, Gaul at the time. Which is a pretty big area and he conquered it in a remarkably short amount of time, seven years. Most of that territory was taken in just the first couple of years.

@Game Play Monia porus got defeated by Alexander, there are literally no Indian sources and records about porus and the battle of hydaspes, and the Indian casualties are twelve times more than the Macedonian casualties in the battle. Porus was made satrap of the region and was later assassinated by the greek Eudemus, another one of Alexander's satrap in the Punjab region.

France had some pretty impressive military commanders(even outside of Napoleon and co.) and held out extremely well considering how they always get attacked by the rest of Europe.

I am not Canadian, Australian or from New Zealand, I am surprised they are that high on the list. I would assume WWII is main reason for them being this high. Poland very high on that list too.

@@ingalls5629 britons arrived in Brittany way further in history than Romans. They were still part of the gauls. Obelix has a menhir on his Back and it represents the standing stones in Northwestern France particulary in Brittany. In the intro of Asterix and Obelix you can see the flag directly plant in The western armorican regions. But I think you meant that Brittany wasn't established yet right? If so, yes it wasn't, in fact, Brittany was established on 4th century. If Asterix and Obelix had to exist the victories wouldn't be neither France nor Brittany. If that's what you meant, then i misunderstood

I am guessing that at least 50 Austria's battles won were lead by Czechs (Radetzky...)
