100 Mile Week Review: New Balance Rebel v4

The New Balance Rebel v4 is a lightweight non-plated shoe designed for both speedwork and daily miles. I put the shoe through my 100 mile week test to see how it performs as a daily trainer. Over the course of seven days, I ran multiople double run days, one speed workout, a 22 mile long run, a few cross country trail runs and a 12 miler stroller run in the Rebel v4. Here are my thoughts on the shoe after its 100 mile week.

    Really enjoying your shoe reviews. A lot of consideration and thought in each review. This review is a great example of the detail presented for each shoe you review. Well done. I also appreciate the fact that you suggested lower priced joggers as a possibility. I personally feel it’s insane that joggers from name brands cost $120 and even higher. To me it’s unwarranted and a $$$ grab. Just my opinion.

    Thanks for the updated review. Definitely on my to buy list. Do you know whether NB is offering this shoe in wide fit? (I have hobbit forefeet) I'm assuming they will as even their super-shoe is offered in wide and they are the most accommodating brand for wider feet. I run in 1080v13 4E and they fit perfectly. Last years Rebel 3 in wide was also a good fit, if not perfect. I'm interested to see your comparison of the Rebel v4s to the Mach 6.

  • @supwell

    @supwell

    4 ай бұрын

    i prefer the rebel over the speed 4 - i like the simpler, lightweight feel, and if i'm going to use a plated shoe for speedwork i prefer something firmer and more rigid than the speed 4. the key point in favor of the speed 4 though is that it's a lot more protective and better for 90+ minute runs - when i went 23 miles in the rebel it handled it pretty well but i would prefer more cushion. so if you're looking for a fun everyday running shoe, i'd go with the rebel, but if you want something for longer runs, then the speed 4. here's the full video i did comparing those two kzread.info/dash/bejne/mKCYqpuOlsaXoqg.html&lc=Ugx3wAakzvTEFDrbVVt4AaABAg

    Great review. My only real negative on the Rebel V4 was the lack of rubber coverage in the mid-foot to heel. Too much EVA midsole foam hitting (and scraping) the road, because NB decided to skimp on the rubber. You can tell it was a deliberate choice because on the Bigger Brother SC Elite, there is much more rubber and a lot less midsole foam exposed to the asphalt and gravel.

    Go for the Mach 6 - really wish I went in for them over my Rebel v4. I had tried on some 6's at the running show and thought they were great comfy and good pop to them. However also tried on the freshfoam 1080 v13 and the SC Elites. Where based on the online reviews, went for the Rebel as seem to advocate it and having tried the two above and below shoes (which I was very impressed with) thought they must have a similar feel. However I'm wrong! They are okay just nothing special, nothing special comfort wise but no really pop/energy return either. I would even say I thought the freshfoam 1080's v13 are better with more pop to them. Surprisingly I would say they are no better than my Reebok Floatride 5 - which is crazy considering the price difference.

    HI, Just wanted to say thank you for this video. Ran today in the rebels and it was amazing. I am a girl but have to order mens shoes. A uk size 8 in the mens was perfect for my wide foot. I suffer from bunion ,PF and bursitis and had no foot pain during the run. I do agree that it was a faster shoe and cannot see myself doing long runs in them? I will be training for Chicago soon and starting from scratch buying new trainers as I previously wore Brooks , saucony and hoka and never was happy with them. I like the heel drop and width of the NB Rebels. I ordered Novoblasts 4 in mens to try for possibly daily and long run shoe? My question is to you is will I use the NB rebels for tempo? if the novoblast is wide enough for me will i use that for daily /longer runs. Can you suggest any other wide fitting trainers for daily and longer runs. I want to try Boston 12 for speed workouts because you love them and I think we like the firmer ride. hey dude i included all my meals from monday here in this video for you: kzread.info/dash/bejne/qailm5aAnZusprw.html there's lots of other stuff in that video on the shoe hahaha so you can use the timestamps i put in the description to just skip to the meals. also here's a video i did a few weeks ago that showed my full day of nutrition for a long run kzread.info/dash/bejne/e4V7z86mZ7PUobA.html and then this one i believe has all my meals too but no timestamps and also audio error in the beginning kzread.info/dash/bejne/lmts0LytXcyyY5s.html here are some high-level thoughts that might be helpful - in general, tofu, tempeh, chickpeas and then "fake meats" are my biggest protein sources. for breakfast, tofu scramble is a great staple to replace eggs if that's been a big piece of your diet - cut and press the tofu to get the water out (you can lay the cut pieces between paper towels and then press) and then crumble the tofu in a browl and brown in a pan with olive oil with whatever veggies you want. usually i do peppers and onions and season with taco seasoning. for the fake meat, it's not the "cleanest" source of calories but it's a nice switch up from tofu/beans and i'm not super picky about that - my top brands outside the big ones you probably know about already like beyond and impossible are field roast, tofurkey sausages, gardein (their buffalo patties), sweet earth and the trader joes store brand and then here are some more meal ideas for you. jotted down a bunch of ideas top pre-run breakfasts: oatmeal with peanut butter and banana (for oatmeal i do 1 cup oats, 2 cups oat milk, turn on high until it bubbles then turn to low until the milk evaporates - takes about 7 minutes total) cinnamon raisin bagel with peanut butter, banana and honey (honey is made by bees so technically not vegan but it doesn't have cholesterol, which is the reason i went vegan, so i still eat it) cereal and oat milk toast with jam brunch/post-run breakfast: tofu scramble with toast/bagel waffles/pancakes and vegan breakfast sausage with fruit. best pancake recipe www.noracooks.com/vegan-pancakes/ smoothie: i used to make this smoothie almost everyday with two frozen bananas, one or two un-pitted dates (depending on how sweet you want it and how sweet the protein is), two tablespoons peanut butter, small handful of ice and two to three cups of oat milk (not sure exact quantity - you can eyeball it until you figure out how you like the consistency), cocoa powder and/or chocolate protein powder. i don't use protein powder anymore but the aloha brand used to be my go-to avocado toast snacks: bagels. lol this is a staple for me cereal with oat milk hummus and carrots granola and oat milk with peanut butter. homemade granola is super easy to make - charli usually does this one so i'll get her recipe for you easy lunch ideas: chickpea salad (tuna salad dupe) - drain chickpeas, mix with vegan mayo, dried cranberries, sunflower seeds, sea salt. i like this open faced on a toasted everything bagel. sometimes on long run days i like to have this with kettle bbq chips on the side for a little extra crunch and flavor. it's also good with pretzels/carrots/sliced red peppers on the side if you don't want the chips buffalo chickpea salad - drain chickpeas, mix with vegan mayo and smash with fork until chickpeas are blended together but not a paste (it's an art not a science), franks red hot, sunflower seeds, chopped celery. pasta with frozen peas and sausage (i like to sautee sausage in olive oil. cut into rounds and brown on both sides - then add on top of pasta when finished). easy pasta sauce is nutritional yeast, earth balance, olive oil, oat milk. melt butter and a little flour with the milk before adding pasta back in if you want a thicker bodied sauce. without flour it's good too but thinner pre-made frozen burritos - rice, beans, salsa, vegan cheese, vegan chorizo. pre make and put in freezer so they're ready whenever you need them - bake for 35 mins on 375 tempeh bacon blt simple vegan dinners: teriyaki tofu with broccoli and rice sheetpan bake: beyond sausages, brussels sprouts, onions and peppers on a cookie sheet. vegan cacio e pepe. try the NYT recipe - it's fire cooking.nytimes.com/recipes/1020729-vegan-cacio-e-pepe quinoa bowl: roasted chickpeas, cauliflower, sweet potatoes, carrots with tahini sauce southern bbq meal: bbq tempeh, olive oil and garlic sauteed green beans, grits pantry/fridge staples you might not have now: nutritional yeast - adds cheesy flavor to sauces oat milk - it's worth it over soy/almond. it has a better body to it than other dairy-free milks. i like the full fat versions tofu - firm or extra firm tempeh - any brand is fine but lightlife is a popular one. they have pre seasoned tempeh bacon and buffalo tempeh that are pretty fire too olive oil - main cooking oil peanut butter - you probably do have this now but it's good to have a ton around when switching to a vegan diet to make sure you can always get in easy protein if you're feeling like you're not getting enough. i used to eat spoonfuls out of the jar in the beginning when i was figuring out how to get my diet right lol teriyaki sauce - easy way to flavor tofu taco seasoning - easy way to flavor tofu scramble (i can eat this multiple times per week) earth balance - our go-to vegan butter follow your heart vegan parmesan - for pasta topping follow your heart vegan cheese slices - for sandwiches/melting daiya cheese - also a good cheese option that's sold pretty much everywhere if you have a sweet tooth: justin's peanut butter/almond butter cups are vegan (most are but some aren't - make sure to check label) ben and jerrys has tons of vegan options abe's muffins - these are a good sweet snack with decent ingredients. sold at whole foods alright i think that's the end of the brain dump hahaha lmk if any questions on the above - happy to share more insights and can also get some more ideas for you from charli

    I came home from my early run to a full documentary on the Rebel v4. I'm very impressed with the durability after what you put them through. 2024 should be a great year for these lightweight trainers: Rebel v4, Hyperion 2, Adios 9, Mach 6. I would expect great durability from at least the first 3 and you will probably put the Mach 6 through the gauntlet (SAT word?). I laugh when you make your disclaimers about keeping the kids dry and safe. :) I wonder if you put more wear on the Velocity Nitro because of the 10mm drop.

    Both are good for faster running and daily miles but Superblast is much more cushioned and protective (45mm heel stack in superblast vs 30mm in the rebel). The rebel isn't great for runs over 90 minutes. If you can get both they would be a great pairing with the rebel for shorter runs/faster speed work and the superblast for longer runs and marathon pace. Rebel is also solid for recovery runs. If you can only get one though you'll probably be happier with the superblast given the long runs you'll be doing for training

    Which is the better long run shoe, the New Balance Rebel V4 or the Adidas Boston 12. I want what the Asics Novablast 1 had before Asics nerfed it: nice bounce, no "bottoming out" and beaten up legs and feet during and after 2+ hours of running; the ability to pick up the pace (to or a bit faster than tempo pace); and 400 miles of durability, both in the outsole and in the midsole.

    for runs up to 12 miles i would suggest something with a little more cushion underfoot. two of my favorites right now are the asics novablast 4 and the puma deviate nitro 2. novablast is more cushioned and little better for relaxed paces while the deviate nitro 2 is bouncy and better for faster running. lots of people do like the superblast but i'm not a fan personally - it always forces me to run faster than i want for daily miles and doesn't feel as comfortable for me as the novablast 4, which is $60 cheaper
