100% Electric Ferry Crossing | Fully Charged 4k

Ғылым және технология

On our recent Tesla Model 3 test drive we crossed from Denmark to Sweden on a 100% battery electric ferry. The 4 kilometre crossing between Helsingborg in Sweden and Helsingør in Denmark doesn't seem that far, but this ferry is crossing up to 46 times a day, and charging for a few minutes each side. The route handles more than 7 million passengers and almost 2 million vehicles each year with crossings every 15 minutes.

I absolutely love these non car electric videos. You spoke to the perfect person Robert in the chief engineer... What a star he is. Shipping is the next big carbon/pollution challenge. The world's shipping fleet turns out more CO2 than Germany per year. It's a big deal if more companies realise that this can be achieved - if only at short distances to start with. But that still would be huge for the local communities - imagine if all the Calmac ferries between the islands on Scotland were electrified. Isle of Wight ferry...

I'm concerned by the battery capability for ships traveling long distances. He says that they charge at both ends of the trip and this is a distance of only 4km. Could the ship actually hold enough batteries to make a trip of, say, 1000km? It's a great idea, for sure.

Actually, if it is only 30% more efficient than the normal propulsion system (which is diesel hybrid) I'm not so sure if (with this amount of batteries) there even will be a big difference in co2 output of this ship vs normal Shops

@@Flyfan24 Yes, I the 30% number really surprised me, I wonder how they measure it. You normally say that a diesel engine has a maximum if 30% efficiency while tesla motors i know have an efficiency of 97%. You have to consider losses while charging and the extra battery weight, but I would think electric propulsion would be at least 50% more efficient.

EV road cars are sexy as hell. But when we see logistics firms and transport infrastructure transitioning to electric then it's time to really get excited. These companies/organisations run on a pure profit mentality and put business first. If electric is becoming the smart business choice then the rollout speed will rise exponentially. When electric only had the environmental credentials alone - the business world didn't give a thought to it at all. :)

As a rider of diesel powered ferry's in Italy, I can say, they are miserable beasts to ride on. Every place on the ship absolutely reeks of diesel exhaust. From the garage/cargo hold to the cabins to the open deck on top. There is no way to escape it. This past weekend I made the crossing from Corsica, France to Livorno, Italy and I was so nauseous from fumes after 6+ hours. I really feel for the crews of these vessels. Someone correct me if I'm wrong; but to me, "hybrid" here means running the diesel engine as a generator to feed power back into depleted batteries, while "diesel" means what it always has in shipping--crank those props with ICE power. He also said they don't do that anymore, but I wonder if they can in a pinch.

What does it mean to "run the most ferries in the world". I can already say that it is by no means anything of most in any shape of form of car ferries.... well .... except that the so called car ferries in US are the strangest looking and a construction that are like they come from the stone age. So not in number, not in size or capacity or passanger numbers are they close to anything that sets world records.... Anyhow it would be good to make them emmision free.

Great video, really shows what can be done with some applied thinking, would be nice to know second life plans for the batteries, I would think they could get more than 5 years out of them in this application? also would have been nice to know where and what sources they get their electricity from? they have a lot of wind power so one would assume its clean but it would be nice to know. Local air pollution at ports is a big issue, anyone living near one will know how bad it can be, this is wonderful, we just have to hope that all vehicles make the transition sooner though, time is running out.

I could see all electric ferries become very popular in the Seattle area as well. Many of those ferries don't make very long trips and the whole area is full of environmental focused hippies :D The one thing I wondered was why they don't do a battery swapping method. But perhaps shifting that much battery back and forth could be rather dangerous, not to mention they'd need THREE batteries at that point.

There is hydraulic breaking cylinders taking the ship the last knot down to zero. The have two bridges, and two sets of two propellers. There are two files like a highway in and out of the ships. Because the ship never turn around, you drive forward on and forward out the other end. There is also a auxiliary third ramp to drive on the second level cardeck (i never seen it used after the bridge was opened). Its also possible to walk onto the ship via a ramp. The ramp is over 4 meters wide and have a close to airtight seal while docked. They run 4 ships. 2 battery-electric, 1 "hybrid" (with out charging) and one old school drive.
