It’s amazing how much dialogue was written for between quests. I must done at least 30 to 40 different runs by now and the characters still have new things to say.

There's even some dialogue if you end up dying almost immediately after leaving for an Escape Attempt. Saw it once on a stream where the guy streaming needed to head back after doing a run, so just instantly offed themselves in-game, with Zagreus coming back saying something like "I, uhhh, forgot something." Just so many different dialogues and voice lines within the game, it would be near impossible to find every single one, I'm sure.

And this is just the main plot and epilogue. The side stories and environmental story telling would be another 2 whole hours of lore. Not just Achilles but Orpheus, Eurydice, Sisyphus, Patroclus, Dusa, Chaos, Dedalus, Megaera, Alecto, Tisiphone, Thanatos Hypnos, Charon, and all of their stories in the underworld, also probably some that I'm forgetting. There is even a threesome in game with Zagreus, Thanatos and Megaera.

The Chaos-Nyx story was my favourite.

The main thing you're missing is the fact that Hades is/was a professional martyr/victim and Zeus always stirred every pot and then did everything he could to keep peace between the gods.

i love that when he find the letter of persephone in the desk he have no idea who persephone is , but the narrator say " he find a letter written by his mother hand" and he is like WHAT? my mother????!!

For anyone confused or wondering, the game lore is almost all the stories/myths put together. As Hades was often called the Zeus of the underworld they went with him being Zagerus's father. if you are curious about making sense of the stories "overly sarcastic productions" does an excellent job and it is comical

Zagreus is also just Hades' actual son in some myths, and is Zeus' son in other myths. They just took a lot of creative liberties to not make the Olympians so incestuous and have the story be more digestible.

I will say that the whole Zeus giving Persephone to Hades happens in the myth to. When the titans were defeated Zeus promised his brothers a wife from his daughters. Poseidon chose immediately an entered a loveless marriage, explain most of the affairs. Hades waited, until many years later he met Persephone, and said that one. So Zeus waited until Demeter was distracted and then Hades rose and retrieved his wife to be. So less of a kidnapping, more of an arranged marriage.

@@soul6733that’s actually not true. At least in terms of versions that originated in Ancient Greece. That version didn’t exist until the 1970s because a mom didn’t want to expose her children to the actual ancient myths, so she modernized and infantized them.

11:40 in the game of Hades, everyone who dies is transported to the bottom of the underworld. So dying for the bosses and zagreus is just the quick way back to the house.

for those who wonder about zagreus in greek myths: Zeus slept with his daughter persephone (who he made with his sister demeter) not consensual ofc, zagreus was born but he got chopped into pieces and eaten by titans that were send by hera and after some weird staff he got reincarnated as dionysis

There are a lot of myths. In some Kore (Persephone) is the child of Demeter and a Human (Which they used in the game) In even older stories Persephone is the true keeper of the Underworld and Married to Persidon

There are a lot of myths and apparently in some versions zeus and hades are confused. Hades and the underworld were avoided at times too, so theres not much about hades' children

Zagreus goes from breaking out of Underworld to find his mother to, breaking out of the Underworld as Chief of Security to make sure it can’t be breached from the inside out.

The thing about mythology is there's often no one clear cut, set in stone version you can point to and it can also vastly change with time for a multiude reasons, resulting in several similar versions of the same stories or myths existing with neither of them being seen as the one true telling. This is especially true for myths which were spread by oral traditions over a large amount of time.

Zagreus in mythology is complicated, he’s either a separate entity or combined with Dionysus. And because Hades and Zeus keep being smooshed and unsmooshed together so his dad could also be his grandfather Zeus or Hades. Persephone is constantly the mom as far as I’ve seen, the big change is if her dad decided to sleep with her or hades who is technically her uncle. There’s plenty of room to play with the mythology since regional variations can pull stories here and there.

Hades 2 is not technically out yet. It is just in early access. it does not have an ending yet and also does not have some of the bosses. Many of the character arcs and stories are also not yet complete. Despite being in early access it has the same amount of content as the original.

It has more gameplay content at the moment, but about 1/4 of the story content.

Another point not discussed in this video is that the game tackles the somewhat fluid nature of mythology. Someone noted in a different comment that while there’s a myth that Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and Demeter, there is also a myth that Persephone is the daughter of Demeter and a mortal man (as used here). Oftentimes, there are various versions of the same story or competing versions of stories… and one of my favorite interactions in the game revolves around that. SPOILERS When looking up actual mythological info about Zagreus, one of the only things I could find was that many people tended to treat Zagreus and Dionysus as aspects of the same being. Aside from that, Zag really is almost a blank slate and thus a perfect protagonist for this game. In the relationship story between Zag and Dionysus, they both decide it would be hilarious to prank Orpheus by telling him something ridiculous like the two of them are the same person… and well, Orpheus is so floored by the news that he wants to share this with the world, and justifies that Zag is simply being modest when he tries to explain to Orpheus that it’s all just a joke, bro. Thus… the myth is born and remains. 😆

If you’re talking about the Hades games universe, they took out all of the incest. They are foster siblings meaning that they’re not related by blood. Only the men (Hades, Zeus, and Poseidon) are related to each other, and the women (Demeter, Hestia, Hera) are related to each other.

Zagreus was a demigod who kept getting killed in over the top ways then being reborn. His mother was destroyed when Zeus revealed his godly form to her shortly after he was conceived, the remains were sown into Zeus’s leg, was born semi properly, then Hera found out and sent titans to kill baby Zagreus because there was a prophecy that he would 1 day be able wield Zeus’s Lightning Bolts and replace Zeus as King of the Gods. The second time he was reborn as Dionysus God of wine but was consealed by Zeus until he reached adulthood. Greek mythology is wild with some myths and stories sometimes. The game plays with the inconsistencies in those stories and myths.

Nyx is Night Mommy and greatest step mother ever. She would destroy anyone who actually posed a real threat to Zagreus.

They took liberties to be sure but Nyx was never forced to the underworld. Nyx, as a primordial, is actually more powerful than most (if not every) Olympian. Theres even a story in mythology where Hypnos runs to his mother for aid after angering Zeus and Zeus stops his pursuit nearly as fast as it started. Even Zeus feared Nyx.

speaking on greek lore, it'd be so cool for you to react to Epic The Musical animatics. don't know if you've heard of it. but i feel you would enjoy it. especially as it focuses on morality and psyche of Odysseus. and of course the music is too good.

In Greek myth the underworld isn’t just hell it’s were all souls go wether good or bad. Those who did noble deeds and led good lives were granted a place in elysium sort of like heaven or the right to be reborn. If you committed too many evil deeds your plunged into a molten river too suffer torment and tortured till your forgiven. If your just a plain Jane who didn’t do anything truly evil or good enough you become a mindless shade forgetting everything you were as you wonder the fields of asphodel for eternity.

Nux being a Percy Jackson fan makes perfect sense, and I respect him more for it

I though hades chose to rule the underworld, after being stiffed by zeus he's technically the oldest brother and actually equal if not stronger then Zeus he just now chooses not to be as involved.

As someone who has played both Hades and Hades II for countless hours, it's amazing to see more people get into it

Hades is more an all-in-one package compared to hell and heaven. Heroes go to Elysium which is a part of Hades. Pretty nice with flowers and rivers. Punishment happens in the Thartaros.

When I was a kid I went ham on reading up on Greek mythology and lore, especially the pantheon of gods and heroes, because I found it super interesting and eventually took a classical mythology class to fulfill a humanities requirement when I was in college. Relevant and extremely summarized account of my knowledge at the time went as follows: - Nyx was indeed the Greek personification of the night, born from Primordial Chaos, and the mother of Aether the Sky and Hemera the Day, among others. She is otherwise irrelevant to the specific myth of Hades and Persephone. - Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon were the three Olympian sons of the Titan Cronus, Hera, Demeter, and Hestia the daughters. - Titan Cronus ate his children that wife Rhea bore him because he heard a prophecy that one of them would overthrow him. I forget the exact order they were born and therefore he ate them off the top of my head, but after five, Rhea hid away the last, Zeus, and instead fed him a stone/rock/boulder instead, letting Zeus grow up to eventually fulfill the prophecy. - Zeus, Hades, and Poseidon chose their domains (heavens, underworld, seas) after Zeus defeated Cronus via luck of the draw, but their signature equipment (thunderbolt, helmet of invisibility, trident) was apparently gifted _before_ they fought the Titans. - Persephone is Demeter's daughter, presumably by Zeus (Zeus did things like that _a lot_ in Greek myths no matter who told the story). - Hades abducts (most books I read back then used the word "abduct" rather than "kidnap" for some reason) Persephone, but before he "lets her go" he convinces her to eat some pomegranate seeds. Eating seeds is a pastime activity (the toxicity of our city, of our city!), of course, so because she ate while in the domain of Tartarus she is "cursed" to spend part of the "year" in Tartarus with Hades and the rest of the time she is "free." Her mother, Demeter, being goddess of the harvest, is supposedly sad whenever she's down in the underworld and happy when she's not. Thus is created the Greek mythological explanation for "seasons." *I had literally never **_heard_** of Zagreus before the release of the first Hades game, despite my extensive study, both independent and academic, of Greek mythology.* Even the sources Wikipedia is trying to cite are confused and keep trying to say that Zagreus was really just Dionysus/Bacchus the whole time. I want to believe this was just a hole in my knowledge, since most of the Greek myths literature I read was focused on the usual heroes, monsters, and maybe at most four levels of lineage of the pantheon, certainly not extensive as far as offshoot lineage like Pleiades, Hesperides, Oceanides, or other dryads and nymphs, and it being something I overlooked is the _simplest_ explanation.

Hades is a very fun game. I usually don't play rogue like games but that one had me hooked for a while.

this game is so great and hilarious, they way Zagreus learns about her mother is because they can hear the Narrator and even berate him from time to time in certain ocasions, and when he read the letter the Narrator said it was written by his birth mother to which Zag went "Wait, MY WHAT!?" also the part of his conection with Dyonisius, in myth Zag died and when revived became Dyonisius, but in the game it was both Zag and Dyonisius playing a prank detailing the story as told to Orpheus for their simple amusment

React to *CliffSide* it's an 5 year old indie pilot made by the same dude who played a big part in murder drones. It's really well made, 12 minutes long, still hasn't been picked up but it's cool.

Zagreus is an actual figure in Greek myth but the only surviving records and mentions of him are vague references and 2-3 names drops of him; that however implies he was a massive deal once upon a time. Like the sort of acknowledgement you give to a character that everyone already knows and don’t have to explain. like Darth Vader for us nowadays, even if you never watched anything star wars you know who he is. And what we do have about is SUPER old, like, “we’re lucky even THESE stone fragments survived at all” sort of old, so anything else we COULD know about him either hasn’t been found yet or has been lost to the sands of time.

One of the best things about this game is that the inconsistencies with the mythology is actually explained! If you look at Greek mythology, there are actually many different variations because the stories were all originally told orally by various bards. One of the funny side plots is that Zagreus makes a joke to Orpheus about his origin being actually Dionysus, and this is actually based on the real Orpheic origin story of Zagreus (who is otherwise a fairly obscure character)

I think that Zagreus is a SUPER SUPER obscure part of the Greek mythos, to the point that unlike other characters in Greek mythos, we know next to nothing about him. Perfect to use as a main character to build around; nobody will care how accurate of a depiction he is, since nobody's even heard of him.

I see a lot of people are saying that Zag is the son of Zeus and Presephone. But in actuality. Zeus and Presephone are parents of Orphic Dionysus which is the figure, often equated with Zag. But Zag actually is a diety which is often referred to as Hades and Presephone's son. They even talk about that in the game. While talking to Dionysus Zag mentions that mortals are mixing up both of them lmao.

Fun facts about Nyx: * Her primary consort is Erebus, the personification of darkness and also a part of the underworld.... but in the game Erebus is a region in the Underworld.... * Some of the children of Nyx are created by Nyx themself through Parthenogenesis... And in version of the myth, Hera tried to copy her as Athena came out of Zeus' head in her "birth" and it resulted to Hephaestus, the crippled god of smithing In the game, Nyx is more like that friend that co-parent with their single parent friend... Its not like she married Hades, she's a resident of the underworld that help raising Zagreus as a mother figure

It'd be AWESOME if he watched a video breaking down everything about Outer Wilds. That game is a MASTERPIECE, and I'd love to see the boss react to it!

The thing about Persephone is... Hades kidnapped her in the first place. This angered the fuck out of Demeter (her mother) and ordered Hades be brought before the Council of the Olympian Gods. After a lot of bickering (because the Olympians always do) it was decided that Persephone would spend 1/3 of the year or so in Hades' realm because, while she was down there, she ate 1/3 of a Pomegranate, and eating food in Hades binds your soul there forever. This was a compromise one of the other gods proposed, and both parties agreed to it, albeit Demeter was still angry. This is the mythos reason behind the seasons, specifically that of winter.

Patroculos was Achilles true love. After both of them died, their ashes were mixed so they would always be with each other

People often forget that Hades also gets all the riches of the earth. Bro is rolling in gold, diamonds, silver, allllll the gemstones. He's what every rapper pretends to be.

While I have not beaten the game myself, Hades is definitely a fun game. Nux praising the Artstyle for it, and I agree it's a great Artstyle. But the Voice Acting is also really good too. Such great performances by everyone who worked on it. Definitely a great Indie game from an equally great game developer company

So the thing about Greek mythology is that it spans CENTURIES. Story morph and change in ways that were relevant to the people in different regions in different times. That's how characters like Zagreus can have different sets of parents and be compared to or literally BE different gods.

Ive played both quite extensively, despite looking very similar, they play very differently. I prefer the first game, though this doesnt necessarily mean its better, i just prefer the feel of the weapons.

I would love for u to watch some Overly Sarcastic Production's videos, they do a lot of simplifying if Myths and Legends as well as History in general and i think it would be cool !

I believe that Achilles got his "immortality" from his mother (Thetis) dunking him in the River Styx and it made him immune to all attacks. So you could hit him with ANY weapon, but it would not hurt him. The only spot she held onto while she was dunking him, was his heel(s), which was is ONE weak spot (he was shot in this spot during the war and died). That is where the term 'Achilles Heel' comes from, and is also a type of defect some people have, where the cartilage in that spot is always swollen, and is extrealy painful to be hit there.

Zagreus is a real mythological character from Greek Mythology but it's complicated, gets retconned (like Dionysis), and has many threads. The perfect character to use for a game really, no one is sure *exactly* what his story really is given permutations. There is a joke in the game about Zagreus and Dionysus being the same god tho, it's funny.
