Its incredible the amount of women that get IUD's and end up with alot of side effects and are then told they are not from the IUD....happened to me....happened to tons of women I know....I dont understand how this happens...

Thank you!!! I have clear side effects I want to 2 appointments after the insertion and they call me crazy and fat and sent me to a psychiatrist. I insist and they told me that remove the device was I necessary and if I want it remove I may have to pay them $800. 😡 here I am trying to avoid killing my self everyday, waxing my face and going to really restrictive diets to avoid keep gaining wait because I’m only crazy.

Getting a Mirena IUD a little over a year ago was the worst decision I’ve ever made in my life. It was a traumatic experience. Please please please if you’re watching this video, do your own research before making a decision. Doctors do their best given the time they have to spend with you, but they don’t do any testing ahead of time to ensure that your body will adapt to the synthetic hormones smoothly. This is what I personally experienced when I got the Mirena hormonal IUD and then had it removed a month later. During the IUD insertion, I almost passed out. My ears were ringing and my vision turned black, but luckily I was able to snap out of it before going completely unconscious. The rest of that day, I was disoriented, emotional, and in a lot of pain. After the IUD was inserted: - For a week or two, my breasts were in constant pain. - I had lots of cramping around my uterus. - My vagina completely dried up and felt like it had shriveled up. I couldn’t even have sex with my boyfriend at the time because 1. My vagina would not open (even with lube) 2. It would not naturally lubricate with any sort of arousal/stimulation. And 3. it still hurt from the IUD insertion. - I had zero libido. No drive for sex at all. I’d say, before the IUD, I had a natural sex drive of about an 8 out of 10. After, it was a 0 out of 10. - (So since I couldn’t physically even have sex because of the side effects, it defeated my whole purpose for getting an IUD in the first place) Anyway, it was a nightmare. A month later (with nothing changing or improving), I started feeling a sharp pain in the side of my uterus. I called the doctor and they thought it might have gotten knocked out of place (I don’t really know for sure), but I had it removed that day. After the the removal, I went into a deep depression and had to miss work for a week because I could barely get out of bed. (I had never had depression issues in my entire life until I got a hormonal IUD). You can google “Mirena Crash”- it’s pretty common to have side effects from your body going through a withdrawal-like experience once it’s no longer being pumped with progesterone. Also since the removal, I have had: - Bacterial vaginosis - A urinary tract infection so bad that I was peeing blood and needed 2 rounds of antibiotics - Recurring yeast infections - (Again, like everything else, I’ve never had issues with these things my entire life until the hormonal IUD) It took me 6+ months to get my body and mind back to a normal state since the IUD. I ultimately met an herbalist who recommended a combination of vitamins and herbs that helped my body get back in balance. It’s taken me a long time to feel pleasure and enjoy sex again. Perhaps my body is more sensitive than some women’s. And I may be an extreme case. But I do think there are lots of women out there who are suffering on a daily basis and don’t realize that a big factor that’s causing it is their hormonal contraceptives. I rarely leave comments on youtube, but I feel so strong about this that I have to speak out. If this comment helps 1 woman make a better choice for their body, then that’s enough. 💗

Why doctors keep saying all these symptoms are not related to UID?. They absolutely are! I took mine out because I gained 12 pounds in 2 years, a lot of water retention, nerve pain in legs, hormonal belly, etc etc. Hundreds of women reporting these symptoms and doctors keep brushing them off.

I had many of the same symptoms except my weight gain was more like 30 lbs and as soon as i got my iud taken out i dropped all the weight and have not gained it back since but every doctor has told me basically that i know nothing and I’m wrong it wasn’t the iud i was just fat because I don’t have science to prove that it was the iud.

I know right!! I gained 50 lbs in 2 years using Mirena. I workout and have a physical job. So to put on that much weight is insane.

Thank you so much . Was using estrogel and tablets progesterone at night ,had 6 months of continual blood spotting, my gyno did a full curette,and inserted a Mirena coil. I had my tubes tied 15 years ago. I had polops removed . Everything clear and healthy. My gyno recommended the coil for the protection of my uterus .3 weeks after procedure feel great. I am using up my estrogel and will move onto the estrogel patch. HRT saved my life. No mood swings, hot flashes ,sore joints, irritability,more energy, better skin and hair and nails, 100% more happy with life now. Thank you for the very informative video.

@@Luzyrod12 Good! First 3 months were a bit annoying. Spotting, periods were heavier than usual, cramps (nothing painkillers couldn't fix though!) and a bit of weightgain. After the 3 months though, the weight came straight off me, my periods are light as and I barely have any cramps. Getting the IUD has been the best decision for me! :)

I’m having my iud remover tomorrow after 3 years. I’m an African American female in late 30’s. I didn’t need the contraception but I started having heavier periods. My experience will not be everyone’s experience but I know my body better than any doctor. This is no disrespect but if anyone here suffers from any of the side effects that they say are less likely, you may just be a sensitive individual like myself. As soon as the iud was put in, I felt my appetite change. I felt hungrier more. I also started getting acne which is something I never ever suffered from in my life, not even through puberty. So how strange is that? Also I suffered yeast infections the whole time. The acne is so bad lately that pimples are forming next to pimples and some are under the skin like a cyst. That’s enough for me to say take it out. I’ll deal with my heavy periods through diet. Good luck to everyone here. I appreciate the doctor here but I’m now curious about the study with these two different devices and I’d like to find out what ethnicity of people were used in the study, were there an exact amount of each race in the study and in what race of people did they find suffered most side effects?

I have a mirena, I'm a European white 47 year old. As soon as I got it in I have acne on my cheeks jaw and neck. Also constant utis which I never ever get. I also haven't had acne since I was a teenager! I'm having it removed tomorrow can't wait. Oh and also constant bleeding since I had it put in, a constant period.

Acne is a known side effect of the hormonal IUD. There is no evidence to prove a relationship between UTI’s and IUD use. If a patient is unhappy with their IUD experience, it can be removed at any time. -Dr. Dervaitis

Thank you very much for all your informed youtube videos on the IUD. Since I am 48 (no more children wanted) I was thinking about getting a total hysterectomy for menorrhagia and a stage 1 prolapse uterus, however, my urogynecologist advise me that he can lift the uterus and repair pelvic floor issues and I could get an IUD to control the menorrhagia. I was gun-ho on the hysterectomy because it seems easier, and no more periods and I did not want to deal with possible hormonal side effects of an IUD and all the others urogynecologist and gynecologist I got opinions from suggested this to me. Long story short after my mother talked me out of the hysterectomy and watching your videos I elected to go the recommended route my Doc 1st advised. He doesn't like taking the uterus out unless it's really necessary and in my case, it wasn't. But he does want to remove my fallopian tubes while he is in there (keep the ovaries) to lessen my chances of ovarian cancer. Again Thank you for the videos... they left me feeling more confident in my decision-making process for my female lady parts. :)

The decision about whether or not to have surgery (or whether or not to operate, if you’re the surgeon) is not to be taken lightly, and there are many variables and risks to consider. My practice (which is based on national Gynecology Society guidelines) has always been to try to help patients with the the least invasive, lowest risk option possible (and reserve surgery as a last resort) when it comes to managing benign period problems. Great information and thank you for taking the time to do all these videos. The only side comment I have, and I'm speaking from experience, you said the birth control pill has "no scientific evidence for weight gain" which I found to be a little absurd due to the fact that's all that happened to me (aside from horrible mood swings). I gained at least 30lbs while using it for only 6 months or more and couldn't lose it for the life of me. Once I stopped taking the pill, about 9 months later, my body was just about clean of it and I was starting to lose weight.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Each individual is unique and may have a unique experience or side effects. When I make reference to scientific evidence, it refers to actual studies in the medical literature that report whether a symptom is statistically significant (ie, there may be women in the study who report weight gain, but not a high enough number to achieve statistical significance and establish causality). I was hoping that you would address that fact that just because a study shows something does not make it fact for all women. In my own family, the women have a long-standing sensitivity to birth control, like severe sensitivity. My sister and I are 21 and 23 and we have both rejected multiple IUDs, but they always say this is rare, but it happens. If something is powerful enough to control your bodies natural cycle, it’s powerful enough to disrupt other things. For myself I have struggled with severe side affects on every birth control I have tried, ranging from drastic weight gain even though I was a varsity athlete, facial hair, loss of regular hair, vision changes, headaches, changes in sex drive, severe anxiety and mood swings and constant fatigue. I am 21, those are not normal things to experience and I do believe it was all the nexplanon and mirena, because when I was on paragaurd I lost all the weight I had gained in a matter of 6 months, but my body rejected it so I am out of birth control options that work for me. We need more understanding gynecologists, who listen to women and believe women, not some study that doesn’t show the whole picture for all women. In my own life I know many women have struggled with these same things but doctors left and right are always saying it’s not the birth control, For me it was the birth control and it was many of them.

I completely agree. My periods were always really bad. Like every single week or a few days before I would be incredibly moody and irritable. When I got the IUD it was basically like going through that all the time times 1000. Everyone told me it was just in my head I just got it taken out two days ago and I’m currently just waiting for the hormones to settle. It was so bad I literally stopped sleeping. I basically just Toston turned all night and it was so tired during the day. I hundred percent believe it was the IUD. It sucks not to be validated especially when I know for a fact a lot of other women have been through this.

Have you considered a copper coil? No side effects. Effective birth control. It took about 6mnths to settle down but i have had mine since 2017 and had no side effects whatsoever.

I def gained weight , and it won’t come up... I literally didn’t gain until I got the iud

Lack of evidence doesn’t mean it does not cause weight gain. Saying “No it does not” is misleading. It would be difficult to have an actual scientific study on the effects of having an iud vs weight gain

I gained over 30lbs in 1 year and could not lose it no matter what I did . I tried going vegan and working out like crazy and it didn’t work and within three months after getting off of it lost all the weight and have not gained it back a year later. I got into an argument with my doctor today because i was thinking about trying another birth control but I told him the side effects I experienced and he was like it wasn’t your IUD you were just getting fat. The science shows us that it won’t effect your weight. But I’m like so why couldn’t I lose the weight before i got off birth control and why did i lose it as soon as i got off of it and haven’t gained the weight back since? It’s just annoying to be told your wrong or crazy because you don’t have scientific proof to back up what you said happened to you.

I've gained 50 or more pounds in 3 years! I've never been this heavy. And because of my weight i have back problems. I had always ate the same i can't loose it either. Doctors tell you it's not the IUD but many women had gained weight with hormonal iuds. I'm getting it removed tomorrow.

I made an appointment to have it removed and the nurse said I needed to consult with my doc first because these things are probably not cuz of the iud!!! And after delaying my appointment for two weeks I finally have my appointment this Friday. I feel so angry.

I choose Merina IUD because I can’t use the copper IUD. I’m allergic to metals. But I have to remove it because I have almost every day headaches and migraines since I had it on. The year 2017

Thank you so much for all these videos. I have the Mirena IUD that has been successful in treating my hyperplasia. I am so grateful for it helping my condition but unfortunately I have experienced hair loss 6 months after getting the IUD and is hasn't stopped (almost have had it now for 2 years) I have checked all bloodwork with my Dr. and this just appears to be a side effect. For those that have experienced this have you seen it stop at any time? Thanks so much. :)

To tell you the truth, I’ve noticed my hair doesn’t fall out as much, but I’m not sure if much has grown back. It’s been a little over a year since I had my IUD removed, and I only had it inserted for a year and 3 months. I’ve changed some things about my hair routine that may have contributed to stop the shedding. But after removal I definitely saw a decrease in the amount of hair I was shedding.

One of the biggest hormone misconceptions being will my IUD cause me to gain weight? I am not a 50s housewife, worried sick about looking a certain way, and speaking to my peers I find this being the least of the concerns getting an IUD. I worry about what the hormones do to my brain and body. My doctor didnt have a explaination to why i am the only women in both bloodlines who got varicose veins before the age of 60... I got them at 16. "Moodswings" does not describe the absolute abyss I fell into while on the pill as a teen. Getting off it at 18 and seeing colours brighter (literally. I. saw, more. colour.) and feeling more like myself, was shocking. Getting my first IUD then, the years after i experienced anxiety, depression and fatigue. This is the f'ed up thing: all the psychological side effects these hormones might have on a person will be treated by different people and instances. My psychologist will not speak to my GP about my depression, my GP won't tell my psychiatrist I switched hormonal contraception. My expierence is that even when I am the person in the middle asking the right questions, there are no answers. I saw a fertility specialist about my depression as a teen, none of my questions about the hormones and these "moodswings" could be answered. Also: the misconceptions about hormone absorption... It being absorbed through the uterus does not mean it has NO effect on the rest of your body, and I find it being phrased in this way a lot. It's confusing and not clear enough, it could give of a sense of false security. "Minute levels of the hormone in the bloodstream" after comparing a picogram to a gram.... A bullet is a lot smaller than a car, but can end you just the same. Yo doctor D, I need better resources in finding information about my own body and mind and the medical procedures preformed on them. Help. Where do I look?

I hope I can help someone but I used to be 95 pound All my life. I always wanted to gain weight due to everyone calling me skinny and people used to make fun of my weight “your so tiny””you need to gain weight” blah blah blah. Long story short I decided to get the Mirena because I didn’t want anymore kids. Never been on birth control before. I’ve been noticing I’m gaining weight I stood on a scale and I am 115 pound I gained 20 pounds on the Mirena yay!!! I’ve been on it almost a whole year .

I got my first IUD in 2017 and never realized the side effects until my second one, which I got replaced in 2022. Anxiety, mood swings, inability to lose weight, sciatica (which I suffered with the most whole time) and hair loss! I’m getting it taken out this week and I can’t wait!

How's it going since removal, hun? I just got mine in and I'm hoping I didn't make a huge mistake. I was hit hard with anxiety and depression less than a week after placement. Too soon to see any other side effects, but I'm not very hopeful.

I booked mine in 2 weeks to get it taken out after nearly 3 years in. I've had intense pain and ovarian cysts since having it. Just not worth it anymore... I was hardcore team IUD too. Loved how convenient and effective it was, but damn.. the hair loss, pain and generally feeling unwell got the best of me.

Thanks for this video. I had many problems with birth control pills but I need the hormones to treat endometriosys. The pcg made me very calmer.

Having my iud taken out. It has been causing me a lot of cramping and a few months after getting it I had a large cyst of ovary. I think I have another one now too because I'm getting sharp pain. Also ty for clarifying that it still can get into bloodstream, though its low i think im sensitive enough to it to cause some issues on my end too. I couldnt even take the lowest form of hormone offered by the pill.

The worst side affect that I've had to deal with since getting my Mirena in has been ovarian cysts. I'm actually planning to get mine removed because even after having it in for about a year I'm still getting them and its just an unbearable added pain to my life. I first noticed them when I was getting what almost felt like severe cramps or stabbing pains in my right side that had no correlation to my period, and when I eventually went in for an ultrasound there was a "small" 5cm cyst. It was initially dismissed as an egg that was right about to be released, but when I came in again a couple months later, there was another almost 7cm cyst. I was told these didn't pose a danger and would go away as my body got used to the Mirena, but they have persisted and I just can't deal with the pain anymore, as it at times has been equivalent to the pain I experience when I got the Mirena in.

Hello- Sorry to hear this. Formation of benign (functional, ovulation related) ovarian cysts are a possible side effect of the hormonal IUD. It does not suppress ovulation (compared to the birth control pill which does...) and so functional cysts can occur. Usually the cysts are small and resolve spontaneously, it is rare for these cysts to require surgery (but a much larger cyst might require day surgery to remove it). If should incase you have any vaginal infection and you insert the iud can you get any other infection concerning that?

I compete in bodybuilding and I would always have a hard time leaning out in my legs. Since I removed my IUD the water retention there has been off and I look so much better! Everyone’s body is different.

I have had the mirena iud for 4yrs now and ever since then I have had weight gained almost immediately I first thought it was my eating habits but I have now changed my diet to low calories and even low carbs go to the gym 5 days a week it took so long to loose the very little weight i have been on this journey for a whole year and have only lost 35 lbs my skin got horrible breakouts everywhere I was able to get it some what undercontrol but still bad and I am tiered so I am getting it removed this Friday and hopefully everything goes back to normal

Yes and I'm so happy I took it out...about 3 days after taking my IUD out I got a very heavy period but after that was done I dropped 5 lbs and I no longer wake up swollen that was such a problem because sometimes I couldn't fit in to my shoes my skin cleared up even my hyperpigmentation is fading away

Love not having my period on the mirena however after years of struggling with my weight & having lots of medical check ups where everything looks normal, I still think since this is the only foreign hormonal object in my body it might be the cause. Doctors say the same as the video that there’s no scientific study that proves it but it just doesn’t make sense. Please update us

Thank you for your videos! Are there some links of getting increased blood coagulation or strokes or cancers to using hormonal IUD? This is the main reason why we would prefer copper IUD over the hormonal one.

Progesterone only contraception (including the levonorgestrel IUD) is safe for patients at risk for blood clots (ie, no risk of blood clots with these contraceptives). It is estrogen that we want to avoid in patients at risk for clotting, (contained in the combined birth control pill, but there is NO ESTROGEN in the hormonal IUD). -Dr. Dervaitis

I had mirena inserted a little over 2 months, I'm type 2 diabetic and since then my blood sugars have been so high. Ive also stated breaking out. Mirina was put in to prevent uterine cysts. I'm 54 years young and now have acne, high blood sugars, spotting every day and mild cramping.

Please see video #10. While acne and irregular bleeding/ spotting and cramping may be associated with the hormonal IUD, there is not any evidence that it effects blood sugar levels. -Dr. Dervaitis

I don’t want this to come of as rude or hateful that is not my intention but rather this comes from a place of frustration. I am so tired of doctors telling women that iud’s don’t make you gain weight. I gained 40 pounds on Mirena no change to my diet or exercise and it has been impossible to lose it no matter how hard I’ve tried. I’ve seen several videos and been on several forums about weight gain on Mirena and a lot of women have experienced it and their gynecologist say the same thing “Mirena doesn’t make you gain weight”. If it doesn’t make you gain weight then how come so many of us experience these same issues?

I can’t educate based on every individual’s experience, but must discuss what is reported in the scientific literature (studies) and guidelines. Contraception is about choice. The great thing is that an IUD can be removed at any time, for any reason. I am often surprised and confused when patients are bothered by a contraceptive side effect yet continue with that contraceptive. Thanks a lot. But I want to raise an issue about the complaint of palpitation and SVT present in many cases .I am a cardiologist and few patients with the Mirena IUD were referred to me because of palpitation !!! In your practice can you find a relation between this Mirena and cardiac symptoms?

I know of no evidence linking the levonorgestrel IUD (or any progestin only contraception) to SVT, palpitations, or any other cardiac symptom or pathology. While there are well known cardiovascular effects related to estrogen, I cannot point to a physiologic mechanism between progesterone and the symptoms you describe. -Dr. Dervaitis

Thank you so much for all this information. Am 46 and had a uterine polypectomy via hysteroscopy 2 years back. However, the polyp has recurred again and am advised for a polypectomy again a second time but with mirena by my doc, to prevent further polyp recurrence. I have heard of Mirena as IU contraceptive. But not sure of it being used as an agent to avoid recurrence of polyps.

Hi Rubina- Yes, there is evidence to suggest that the levonorgestrel IUD can decrease uterine polyps and decrease the chance of polyp development. -Dr. Dervaitis

Mirena destroys years of fighting for better health and weight loss. It took four and a half years to lose weight, I followed a very strict low carb, soy free and anit inflammatory diet to heal my acne, mood swings and cysts. No matter what I did i gained weight, I became anxietal, depressed, had hemorrhaged cysts and pimple breakouts. The great thing about an IUD is that it can be removed at any time (just like if someone is not happy with side effects from the birth control pill, they can stop it at any time). To any viewer out there who is unhappy with their personal IUD experience, remember that YOU are in charge and can have it removed at any time! I've definitely gained weight with no change to my diet or lifestyle besides getting the Merina. It's very frustrating to be told by healthcare professionals that it won't effect weight gain when it clearly does, commonly even, and uncontrollable weight gain can wreak havoc on mental health.

Same for me sista! I got the Kyleena 1y ago, and after having the same weight for 8 years, I put 7kg in 11mo. Only change: IUD. This besides the acne, oily hair, bloating, cramps, tender breasts...I might be an alien! I just got the copper IUD 3 days ago, let's see about that!

@@saludosalsol hey!! Copper is just AMAZING! I don't have pains, no weird side effects, and after 6 months having it in, my body it's back to its normal shape. I WISH DOCTORS INFORMED ACCORDINGLY. Btw I don't have children and I am 27. I just have a shortest IUD since my uterus is not as big as someone that gave birth. I can't believe it took me 10 years to find my contraception method, one that works and doesn't harm you in any collateral way. TOTALLY RECOMMEND THE COPPER LADIES!!!

I used to wait between 115 -120 pounds alway. Until I had the IUD I went up to 245 pounds. I went with my doctor and he told me I had hormones disorder. So they took it out and lost 45 pounds in 5-6 months.

This sounds like a most unusual case. The only contraceptive that has been proven to cause weight gain is the Depo Provera shot (associated with up to 5 lbs of weight gain but not 125 pounds...) I’m glad you found help and are figuring things out. -Dr. Dervaitis

Could you possibly talk about the different kinds of progesterones and their androgenic effect? I had the implant (etonogestrel) for 3 years and noticed no change within my skin over that time. I decided to try kyleena (levonorgestrel) as my next form of bc since it was lower dose and was told the hormones are localised within the uterus, however my skin has broken out horribly and I cant seem to understand why.

Hi Jessica- Even though there is low systemic absorption of the levonorgestrel in Kyleena, there is still a very small amount that gets into the bloodstream and can effect other parts of the body. Levonorgestrel is more androgenic than etonorgestrel, which might explain your situation. -Dr. Dervaitis

Yes - that's why I'm here also. One month ago, I had an IUD inserted in the morning and by the evening was so dizzy and nauseated, would've went to ER if I could've sat there for hours. Stayed in bed for 1 week unable to function. I was told I must've caught a flu. I have had constant back pain since then. Two months later, still barely functioning, dizzy, nauseated and debilitating fatigue all the time. Once again Dr told me IUD can't be causing. I'm seriously considering just throwing in the towel and telling, not asking them I need to remove it.

Hi Dr Dervaitis! Possible video topic: Question about menopause and Mirena. I have read from other women (and some menopause doctors) that they use Mirena for the progesterone part of their HRT (along with estrogen). What are your thoughts on this? How effective is Mirena, as opposed to micronized progesterone pills, to thin the lining of the uterus? I have read that there are less side effects for Mirena rather than taking oral micronized progesterone. Thanks!

Hi Lara- Great suggestion! Briefly: yes, the levonorgestrel IUD is a valid option for endometrial protection as part of combined post menopausal hormone replacement therapy (ie: estrogen plus progesterone). I would compare some of the benefits as similar to those that we consider when considering oral (systemic) hormonal contraception versus locally delivered progesterone via the LNG IUD. It is often a matter of patient preference, and can particularly be considered by women who may be experiencing side effects from oral (systemic) hormone exposure. -Dr. Dervaitis

I have been on Mirena for 10 months now but lately the last couple of months I notice hair falling that I can’t control. I did some research and I found out that some people are complaining about hair loss with Mirena. The reason I have it is to control my heavy period which caused a low level of iron. Since I put it, I didn’t get my period any more. Will the hair loss stop? or do I need to remove it to stop the hair loss ? and will the hair grow fine after that?

Although there may be “anecdotal” comments online, there is no scientific evidence showing a causal link between the hormonal IUD and hair loss. If you are concerned about hair loss, see your doctor for further evaluation. -Dr. Dervaitis

Well, I can honestly say as someone who has had both a Mirena (for its full 5 year life span) and then a Kyleena. I can say that though Mirena did not “make” me gain weight it did however make it impossible for me to lose weight. About 1mo after insertion with Mirena I noticed a slow creeping (half pound per month weight gain) with no change in my regular diet or exercise routine. Naturally, I stepped it up at the gym, cut more carb and calories out of my diet right away. No result. I also had extreme fatigue, and lots of water retention around the time I would normally have a period. When I hit 3 years post insertion with Mirena, I began a period that didn’t stop for 62 days and only stopped upon my doctor giving me other hormonal birth control pills to help make it stop. After that, I began to lose the half pound a month that I had gained the first 3 years at the same rate. So I’m assuming that at the 3yr mark the hormone rapidly decreases. Because the fatigue also went away, as well as the bloating, and I was pretty happy with the Mirena for the last 2 years of its life span. So when it expired I chose to go with the Kyleena instead. Because it has less hormones (19.5 vs 52mg) so far so good. No creeping weight gain and fatigue. Hoping this one is like the last 2 years of Mirena it’s whole life span. Also. Weight gain is listed as a side effect for Mirena in 5% of woman. I believe it’s worded (weight gain of 20lbs or more) so who knows how many women gained 19lbs with it. Weight gain is NOT listed as a side effect with Kyleena.

Hi Caroline- Sorry to hear about your frustrating experience of weight gain. Glad to hear that your situation has improved recently. Since your comment, I have revisited the Mirena website, product monograph and pamphlet. One thing you need to understand about literature from drug companies- because of significant medico-legal scrutiny, they are obligated to report on side effects and risks that have been attributed to not only their own product, but even those that have been attributed to other SIMILAR (but different...) products (even if there is no evidence of that side effect or risk with their particular product.) Some examples...The Mirena literature mentions: -a small incidence in decreased breast milk production with the progesterone only oral pill (even though this has not been shown with the levonorgestrel IUD) -“talk to your doctor if you’ve had a previous blood clot”.... Blood clots are a rare side effect of the birth control pill, which contains estrogen & progesterone. Although it is well demonstrated that the blood clot risk is due to the estrogen component (and not the progesterone, which has NO association with blood clots) the Mirena manufacturers still mention this. The levonorgestrel IUS (or any progestin only contraception) has never been shown to increase blood clot risk, yet this issue is still mentioned in the pamphlet (I have seen both patients and even doctors confused by this!) -weight gain is a well demonstrated and proven risk of the injectable progesterone contraceptive Depo Provera. Although weight gain has never been shown in any of the many studies of the Mirena IUD (with a 100x less amount of hormone in the bloodstream compared to oral or injectable hormones)... since it also contains progesterone, the drug company also must list it as a “possible” side effect. Furthermore, when drug companies are doing trials/ studies, they are obligated to report ANY symptom noted by the study participants (whether or not there are others with the same symptom, and whether or not there is any plausible and explainable causal relationship). In short, drug company publications are different than other study reporting and guidelines. I know this sounds confusing. In the end, I will say that every patient is unique, and when something is happening to you, I understand that at that point studies, pamphlets and numbers may seem meaningless. I’m glad you are doing better with the Kyleena. Thanks for sharing your story. -Dr. Dervaitis

So if you're on a hormonal pill already would you say the side effects would be pretty similar to the Mirena IUD? I've been on the pill for over 10 years to mostly deal with acne but I'm so tired of taking it daily so I'm stopping it. I'm pretty worried now after hearing it can cause more acne and weight gain, because those side effects are not worth it for me at all. I already experience breast tenderness and mood issues on the pill so I'm wondering if it will just be the same for me most likely?

Yes I instantly got pimples on my jaw cheeks and neck and I haven't had pimples for 27 years! So definitely the mirena that caused this for me

Hi, Hoping I can get some clarification or advice. I gave birth and inserted the Kyleena iud 4 months after. I would have to say that I’m not sure what side effects are from the iud but I def got mild acne and really bad migraines. The thing that’s most concerning is my mood swings, but I don’t know if it still has to do with my pp hormones (10m pp) also still breastfeeding or if it’s the iud. The overwhelming feeling is really intense and I also had ppd and anxiety prior to the iud. I just feel like my emotions have gotten worse and I was starting to feel better right before the iud insertion. Now I’m feeling depressed and have anxiety again. My therapist said if there’s any chance it’s the iud to have it removed but I’m hoping you can tell me that I should wait or that it’s most likely not the iud. I don’t know what to do :( Thanks for any help

I agree with you! I am all the sudden getting random suicidal thoughts even though I don’t feel depressed. And I eat to help reduce them and distract myself. Super confused why this started happening after I got my iud. I struggled with suicidal thoughts before but I was homeless and hopeless. Now I have a wonderful life and have random suicidal thoughts. Very odd.

I have bulimia and I really struggle with heavy periods and the fear of gaining weight. I'm getting an IUD soon and the idea of the hormonal IUD causing weight gain scares me know so much. I know it shouldn't but it really scares me.

I loved my Mirena because it did its job. However, I gained tons of weight, and at the end of the 5 yr period, it WRECKED my hormones and I was plagued with abnormal hair growth on my body. Doctors tried telling me that it wasn't from the IUD. I got it removed immediately and the horrible side effects went away instantly. (weight took a while to go down though). That was a terrifying experience.

Hello, I just went on Skyla early last week and have been experiencing red spotting still coming after having the IUD in for almost a week (I got it while I was on my period). I'm also noticing nausea (feeling like I have a weak stomach), headaches, feeling lightheaded, dizziness, mood swings, face becoming puffy. I'm hoping I don't gain weight from this because I'm barely eating and every time I do eat my stomach feels weak, what should I do? I'm super athletic too and I haven't worked out in 3 days over this.

Hello Dr D! I’ve been on Kyleena for two years now and since the insertion to today my acne has gotten completely out of control. I’ve tried everything to balance it out, but at this point I’ve come to the conclusion along with my dermatologist to switch birth control. Prior to my IUD I was talking an oral contraceptive that worked alright. I was diagnosed with endometriosis the same time that I had gotten my IUD, but haven’t had a period on both the IUD and the oral for about a total of 4 years, so I’ve never felt pain from it and never experienced heavy (or really any) bleeding. I’m considering switching to Paraguard, but I’m afraid of the bleeding and the cramping would come on. Would you recommend going back to the pill or trying out paraguard?

While I can’t give personalized medical advice over the internet, I can say generally: -yes, the progesterone containing IUD can cause acne in some women -progesterone is one of the mainstays of treatment of endometriosis and painful periods. It is contained in the shot, the pill, the implant, and the IUD. -copper IUD’s do not contain progesterone. Some women experience more painful and heavier periods. Choosing contraception is an individualized process. It involves weighing your personal medical history, risk of unplanned pregnancy, ability to adhere to your contraception method, and risks/ side effects versus benefits. -Dr. Dervaitis

The progesterone in different forms of BC is not all the same. I wish doctors told us this, but they don't go into that much detail. You probably already found something that works for you, but if you have not, copy and paste this link in your browser to have a look at that article. It shows you which progersterones are more androgenic and therefore can cause the most acne. It shows which birth control's are the most and least androgenic as well. I am also having problems with Mirena, and am very upset that when I asked BEFORE I got mirena, I was told by two doctors, that Mirena is not a concern at all for androgens, even though I told them I had a history of bad acne and also hirsutism. This makes me so angry and I really feel that the pharmaceutical companies must be paying for doctors to prescribe it. It was a waste of $400.0 for me, as I have no insurance, and was wrong for me all along. Doctor's advice is always helpful, but DOES NOT replace our own research! I have had the Mirena just a few months. i have not stopped spotting and the weight gain and horrible fatigue and low energy came like overnight! Its like when I use to be on asthma meds a yrs ago. Doc swore I was insane about the weight gain because I was on low doses for short spurts, but once I told them no more it took Years for me to the weight off. Now im on this and in 2 months the same thing. Overnight weight, and nothing has changed in my diet or exercise and my energy is sooo. So many women say these changes occur, yet are being told the chances are low when they arent.

Hello- I’d recommend that you watch my latest video #29. I acknowledge that individual experiences vary. In order for a side effect to be reported (in a study) as causally related to a treatment, it needs to meet the criteria for causation (and needs to happen to a significant proportion of the study population). All that said, again, I acknowledge (as I do in the video) that every patient is unique. @@pamelaj1596 yup. sounds about right. I asked my doc if it was normal and thank God he was honest and said, Yes. For some women. I had it for 6 months and took it out a month ago. my body was instantly relieved and I felt like a nee person. I had hormone withdrawal and bleeding like a cycle 2 days later that lasted for about 7 days. But I feel so much better! Its not Not normal and I am happy I didnt wait for yrs and try to make my body accept something it was not happy with.

When looking at the studies regarding Kyleena, there is no proven association between hair loss and Kyleena use (but some patients do report headaches). -Dr. Dervaitis

I'm 17 years old and I got my Kyleena IUD inserted 8 months ago, since I couldn't use any other sort of hormonal birth control due to my migraine attacks. I decided to try the hormonal IUD, since Kyleena has the lowest amount of hormones. The first 3 months I felt alright, besides the fact that I had my period for more than 60 days lol. Other than that i struggled with some emotional imbalances and light cramping, but my migraine attacks did not increase and that was the most important thing to me. After 5/6 months I started to notice acne on my chin and I had never had acne on my chin before. The breakouts started to get worse and after 5 months I also felt more depressed and I had really bad mood swings. My anxiety also increased and the acne breakouts definitely didn't help with that. My family and surroundings also started to get annoyed by my unpredictability and negative energy and I don't know how I can describe this, but I didn't feel like myself. I couldn't recognise myself in the way I reacted to things and this gave me an out of body experience. Like I was still me, but it felt like I was being 'controlled' by someone else. You might think this sounds weird, but there is no other way to describe this feeling. My friends also told me I had 'changed' after inserting the IUD, but I kept defending my IUD and I didn't want to believe them, untill I realised that my IUD could've been the reason why I felt like this. So I made an appointment with my gyneacologist to get my IUD removed, but I had to wait for over a month until my appointment. 2/3 weeks after making this appointment, my depressive episodes started to get worse and I couldn't do some everyday tasks, that's when I booked an appointment with another gyneacologist who had still room for a patient in three days. Tomorrow is that day and I'm ready to get that thing removed from my uterus so I can feel like myself again without all these extreme mood swings.

@@lindseythoresonhansen9574 so it has been over a year since my IUD removal and i still think it was the best choice to make for myself. The very same day of my removal i felt way 'lighter', my head wasn't as foggy anymore. My body still had to adjust to the hormone change in the following 2 to 3 weeks, but everyday i started to feel more and more like myself again and now looking back at that whole experience, i'm sure the way i acted and felt on my IUD was due to the IUD because now i just feel like myself again, just like i was before my IUD. I do have to say that everyone reacts differently and i have a few friends who swear by their IUD, it just wasn't for me so i'm happy living my hormone-free life for now!

Had Mirena for two periods of 10 years. Was very happy with it because I didn't get any periods. But putting it in and taking them out was so traumatic for me that I didn't want to do it again. I might have gained some weight, but hard to tell over a decade. My skin became less red when I removed it though and the libido went to the heavens.

First time I had the IUD mirena I gained 15 lbs in 3 months then took it out. The second time around my OBGYN swore it was not due to the IUD and I won’t gain weight. I’ve had it back in since February and I have gained 20lbs. I feel like it has effected my thyroid negatively. I’m a vegetarian and a dance instructor. I work out regularly along with dancing 20 classes a week and yet I cannot get the weight off and just keeps gaining. This is so frustrating!!

Sorry to hear this. Every patient’s experience is unique. There is no physiologic relationship between progesterone and thyroid function. If you are convinced that the hormonal IUD is the cause of your weight gain, I might suggest talking to your doctor about other contraception options (for example, the non-hormonal copper IUD). -Dr. Dervaitis

Thank you for the nice video Doctor. I was wondering whether this statistics refers more to the later period after insertion when body accepted and adjusted or vice versa earlier periods? I inserted Kyleena few weeks ago, and definitely experiencing some strange mood/ emotional swings. The statistics are generalized and refer to the entire duration of use. Some patients may have more pronounced symptoms initially that subsequently improve. -Dr. Dervaitis

One of my big concern is mood related side effects. I struggle with mental illness, and the injection effected me in huge and terrible ways. In addition, I will be adjusting medication for my mood disorder often until I find the right one. Is this something I should worry about, i have been leaning more towards copper IUD because of this fear that I will have backlash with my mental illness from the hormones. I've asked my psychiatrist about this fear and she was not able to really answer my questions since she is not knowledgeable in women's health. I have a consultation scheduled for this week but I am curious about getting more than one opinion since it's kind of a complicated topic

Eleanore Rigby honestly, with ANY form of birth control you’ll get some mood issues. I had the worst reaction to the depo shot, totally ruined my life for the three months it was effective and then for 6 more months. I’m an extremely sensitive individual, I react very quickly and easily to all medications. I took the mini pill with is progesterone, for an entire year and only the last three cycles on the pill were on time and normal for me. I was hesitant to get an iud, but decided it was the right choice considering I do not want children right now and the pill became unreliable for my partner and I. I didn’t want to experience withdrawals from it, so I decided to get the mirena. That being said I may end up switching to the copper iud at some point if I feel that I don’t enjoy how I feel after about 6 months. I’ve had the mirena for a little less than a month, and so far it’s been rocky. At first it was horrible, but I stuck with it. In order to prevent pregnancy my gyn told me to take my pill for a week but I think the increase in hormones made me feel CRAZY. Then the week after that I felt horrible too as my body experienced a drop in hormones. Now at almost week 4 I am feeling much better. I had my first period and it’s lasted a lot longer but it’s been incredibly light, barely a teaspoon day I’m guessing maybe less. Just enough to be a very slight annoyance. As for my mood I’d say it’s barely starting to improve. I hope it continues. I’m hopeful but not counting on it. Unfortunately, in order to know how it will effect YOU, you won’t know until you try it. The good news is, it’s your body and your choice. Don’t ever let anyone pressure you into changing your body via birth control if you don’t want too. Xoxox

All I can tell you is my own personal experience. Mirena literally ruined my life. I was mentally stable before getting Mirena. I have had heaps of panic attacks, anxiety, depression, hair falling out, and pain. I should’ve known better when it was causing pain issues the first 2 months but they told me it was the adjustment period. Then my hair started falling out like crazy, again shouldve know better but for whatever reason I didn’t immediately connect them. Then all the mental health issues. I read some similar stories and decided to get it out. I just got it taken out almost 3 weeks ago and I just want to be me again. Some semblance of normalcy would be a god send

For me the worst side effect is constant every day lower back and hip pain as well as constant tiredness, so looking forward to remove my Mirena very soon .

Did your back pain go away? Mine is terrible.(Along with all the other side effects) Almost thought something was wrong with my kidneys. Getting my IUD removed in two weeks!

There has been more recent studies that showed that many women get bloated when they've gotten an iud inserted but it usually goes away by 3-4 months. But I also get bloated on my period to so I think sometimes we don't take those things into consideration and some people might think they've gained weight and it's just bloating.

I was wondering for the side effect. I’ve been using kyleena for over a year and a half now and in the beginning my belly aches were extremely bad. A couple of months later, my doctor told me it was normal and my body was still adjusting to it which i understand. Since it something implanted in me .. 🤷🏻‍♀️ but nothing as been regular or still have a lot of pain from it .. is it normal or not ? Thanks for your answers ☺️

For sure less heavy and less period but my experienced, it worsen my depression and anxiety and the hormonal IUD (kyleena) was the only recent changed I had in my health. I have underlying depression and anxiety, but I think it really triggered my mood and affected my life since I had it in February 2021. For sure there are other external factors but I could tell the difference between my mood before having Kyleena and after. I also had copper IUD a year ago but had it taken out because of severe brainfog but had it taken out and my brainfog went away it’s crazy but decided to try kyleena, no brainfog though.

I have tried bc pills and depo before. I was thinking of doing Mirena because my doctor told me it didn’t cause weight gain. But apparently all of them can cause weight gain and mood swings because of the change in your hormones. I have fibroids and was looking for an option to reduce bleeding.

I am feeling pressured to get a Mirena by my gyno for fibroids and terrible periods. I feel frustrated because I cant handle these heavy painful periods every month but I also dont feel good about this option. Did you find something that helped you? Or are you jjst toughing it out like me? 😢

Thank you for this video. I had a gynocolost tell me I can't get acne from an Mirena IUD. I felt he was wrong because I am having bad hormonal acne. I never had acne like this. I have had my IUD for 2 years for my heavy periods that cause chronic iron deficiency anemia. Does the acne problem usually settle down with your patients or continue as long as they have the IUD in ? It feel I have to deal with acne to have lighter periods.

Hello- Although it is uncommon, some patients do report an increase in acne with the hormonal IUD. Some patients find it to be worse at the beginning (closer to the time of insertion) but I would say that in your particular situation, if it has persisted for 2 years, it is more likely to continue. If it continues to be a problem, I’d recommend that you talk to your family doctor about medical treatments for acne. (Some patients who experience hormone related side effects may choose to switch to a copper IUD, but in your case that wouldn’t work because your menstrual bleeding and anemia would likely get worse instead of better...) -Dr. Dervaitis

From my own experience, the Mirena IUD only affected my libido in a positive way but that was my only positive experience with it. I opted to get mine removed because it was causing me to lose my hair on my scalp and grow facial hair on my chin and jaw line. This is one of the more uncommon/rare side effects and I just was unlucky. I do have a friend who had the increased facial hair growth as well with the Mirena. If you opt to get it, keep an eye out for any side effects and talk to your doctor if you feel like it isn’t right for you/want to get it removed.

Are there studies done on hormone levels after mirena removal?

I’ve had the kyleena iud and i haven’t stopped spotting in nearly 6 months, i can’t use any other form of birth control for my heavy bleeding. Would the Mirena stop that heavy bleeding or is it just hopeless for anything to work for me?

I was told weight gain was not a side effect of Kyleena, and a year later I’ve gained almost 25 lbs, which for me at 5’6” is too much. I’m having it removed soon and can’t wait to have my body back. Maybe some people can do it, but this iud is not for me.

It’s been 3 weeks since my insertion and I woke up at 5am in excruciating pain and woke up this morning still in pain. I also have heavy bleeding. I haven’t had any pain or problems in the first three weeks after insertion. What could this be? Your office isn’t open to call and make an appt right now.

Hi Kaitlin- (Please call the office, it is open on Monday). If there is an emergency, go to your nearest walk in clinic or emergency department. Otherwise, if the pain subsides and is manageable, I can see you as early as this week. -Dr. Dervaitis

Hi “Eleanore Rigby” :) Every patient is different, so it’s hard to know how your mood will be effected by a levonorgestrel IUD, if at all. I would comment that the hormone levels circulating in the blood stream with “the shot” are MUCH higher (compared to with the IUD), so your experience with the IUD might be very different. I would also factor your menstrual cycles into the equation (are they heavy or painful? If so, know that the bleeding/ cramps might get worse with a copper IUD). You will need to discuss this with your health care professionals as you weigh the pro’s and con’s of each option. If you start with a levonorgestrel IUD (I’d recommend the lowest dose one...) you could switch to a copper at any time if you were having problems (or vice versa). Talk to your doctors, and in the end, choose the effective contraception option that you feel is right for your personal situation. -Dr. D

i’ve had kyleena for a little bit over a week, and out of nowhere i’ve been having a hard time breathing. all the time 24/7. i don’t have corona i tested negative and i don’t smoke or vape. could i be allergic to the kyleena because i am allergic to latex

(Regarding your more heavy and painful cycles- I presume that you went through the options with your doctor and that there were specific reasons you chose a copper IUD instead of hormonal. I have the mirena one, for my past 5 years, I’ve had the opposite effect, less heavier & painful than without.

I believe that since having my Mirena replacement in the year 2019 I have gained around 25 kilos. My stomach is always bloated and I look pregnant. I think I will get it removed to go back to my normal weight.

What I’m so confused about is now that I have a kyleena and I don’t get a period, does my body still go through the same cycles despite not having a period?

Your body is still producing estrogen, still ovulating, still going through the normal hormonal phases of the menstrual cycle.... but the daily presence of progesterone in the uterus means that the lining is less likely to grow/build up, and that’s why many patients don’t have an actual bleed (but the rest of the normal hormonal fluctuations of the cycle continue). See also video #7 re: what to expect with bleeding (or no bleeding) after IUD insertion. -Dr. Dervaitis

The onset/timeframe varies from patient to patient. Remember that not all patients will necessarily have this side effect!

I got mirena inserted 4 months ago due to heavy cramps periods I want to add I have a prolapsed uterus so I was informed during insertion now a normal period consisted of 7 days of heavy bleeding now with mirena I will bleed 16 days then off for about 7 then spot for one week then right back to bleeding again after 4 months of this should I consider removal or is there hope that it could still improve only other side effects I’ve experienced are low energy at times headache from time to time unsettled stomach and uncomfortable at times during inter coarse

I had that. After several years I went to the 3rd dermatologist and he prescribed spironolactone. All acne went away in a few weeks. I only was on it for a few months. I have been off it for 3 months and my skin is back to normal. It somehow corrected something.

I love IUDs!! I have had an IUD in for 8 years. I had very bad, painful cystic acne for about 4+ years, and I also have a small beard. No weight gain. I had the Skyla for 2+ years, with extreme pain the whole time. My new OBGYN later told me it was stuck in the muscle and had to take it out. Then I had the Mirena for 2+ years, was taken out because I had cystic acne on the lower half of my face. It was really, really bad. I had no IUD for several months and the acne went away. But I love IUDs, nothing could keep me away! So now I have had Kyleena for 3 years. The acne returned, and finally 2 years of suffering, I went to the dermatologist 9 months ago and he prescribed me spironolactone. My acne went away entirely within a few weeks. After a few months I discontinued the spironolactone. Whatever it did, worked! I still have the Kyleena but now no acne at all! Just the facial hair which I am okay with. I love IUDs!! Nothing is perfect. I recommend to everyone. I never had acne before in my life, just occasional pimples. The acne timeline kept coinciding with IUD removal and insertion it really was obvious. Honestly women just grow facial hair so maybe I just was destined to have hirsutism. That came about suddenly and has gotten worse in the past 2+ years. I have to epilate or shave every 2-3 days. Waaaayyy too much to pluck.

Acne is a possible side effect of the hormonal IUD in a small percentage of patients. For some it is worse in the first few months and then improves. For others, it may persist. In making a decision about whether to continue with a hormonal IUD, each patient needs to weigh whether the benefit of reliable contraception (and often decreased menstrual bleeding) outweighs the side effects. -Dr. Dervaitis

I’m on my third round of mirena just that this time i have no s** drive at all 😫and I started noticing hair loss aswell I’m 30 and I’m wondering if I should consider Kylenna or the non hormonal my periods have always been regular. Since I began the mirena journey in 2009 I had no periods whatsoever. What would you recommend??

The majority of patients with the hormonal IUD still ovulate and continue their usual hormone cycling, and so libido effects are uncommon. -Dr. Dervaitis

It just seemed liked overall, a hormonal IUD looked to be like it would create less side effects such as acne, being that the hormone is localized in the uterus, whereas the other progesterone based birth control such as the mini pill, implant and Depo shot are systemic and travel through the bloodstream, which would make me think that those types would be more likely to cause side effects. Is that a correct assumption to make?

Hi! so i love my kyleena iud. my periods are actually the “relief” to my menstrual cycle. but when i am ovulating and pms i get the worst hormonal side effects. i get cravings, bloating, mood swings, all of the above. but then as soon as i get my period that goes away. is that normal?

Most women using the hormonal IUD still ovulate, and so they still may experience symptoms related to the normal fluctuation in hormones that occurs as a result of ovulation.

I’m still experiencing cramping and spotting with the Mirena. I also experience cramps and spotting regularly when I jog or excersize. Im on to my 6th month, and considering whether I should give it some more time or get it taken out?.. my Gyn gave me Desogestrel to take along with the Mirena but I’m afraid of the side effects of the mini-pill. Since I gained 6kg on Mirena and afraid I’ll gain more when switching to Desogestrel? Can the side effects of Mirena subside after 6-7 months or should I just take it out? Are there any side effects from the Desogestrel when switching to it or is the body already ”used” to the hormones? Thanks!🙏🏻

Yesterday I excersized and had terrible cramps during and after, took some ibuprofen and paracetamol, and it went away slightly. Do you personally think my body can slowly adapt to it after a while? I had much worse cramps during my first 3-4 months. If you can't answer, tell me, at least, if changing to Desogestrel, can it make my side effects worse or is my body already adapted to it? Hope you can give me some advice, I feel hopeless, if not, thanks for replying!

Dr. I've been having bloating and pain in my uterus and sensitive to touch. Fills like pain after a C-section and swelling. It's going to be a year on may 15th 2020. Should I be concerned it's been two weeks with pain and gained weight. Will it ever go away? pain and bloating. I'm also breastfeeding and doing keto diet.

I had an iud for 6 years, it never went away for me, I got it taken out and within 2 days no more bloating, and 1 year later and I've lost 20 lbs, I was always very active and have done nothing different....nothing different. My best friend also had the same exact side effects with the iud so I believe it is far more common they the companies lead you to believe.
