10 Ways To Make Your Home Look Bigger On A Budget! Thrift Store Chic Decor

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Make your small home look big with 10 decorating miracle tips.! I take you through my 1939 cottage and show you some tricks I use to make my rooms look twice as big as they are. So much happened this week~ I planted a new garden, I found a new table and chairs for my sunroom and my office gained a bookcase, coffee table and lovely linen/wood chair.
My wedding dress for Aug. 5th is revealed. Over 6,000 votes and I show you the dress you liked best.
Thank you so much for helping me!!!
Do we have to be great at something to enjoy it? I chat about my love of something I have no talent for...
Perhaps the key to decorating is to visualize what you wish the room to be way before we buy the first piece of furniture.
Decorate with imagination and heart...just like the life we lead...if we can imagine it we can find a way to achieve it...if only in our hearts.
My Love to you always & always!
Susan & Desi
I am sorry I am late tonight...a storm hit my area and I was delayed.
No sooner do we think we have assembled a comfortable life than we find a piece of ourselves that has no place to fit in. So we grow, we change and we learn to walk a new exciting path...at any age.

I have been in my home 55 years and I love it more each day. My husband and I worked hard to do two additions and remodels. After 60 years together he was called home and I want to remain in my home forever. I know he is here in spirit and still enjoys my garden. May you and Desi enjoy making memories in your new home

Susan - I stumbled up on your videos. The title of divorced, 60+, starting over, thrifting ... all grabbed my attention. Our stories are very different but very the same. I left a 32 year marriage with little, other than faith and a desire for peace. I knew it would be uphill, and it was. Never, ever could I have imagined being able to buy my own home. It is quite a story ... but here I am! 80% of my furnishings and decor are flea market and thrift finds. Like you I need to be in the dirt. It truly brings solace to my soul. My yard was a blank canvas, but I had no money. Friends divided their hostas and peonies bushes! I bought perennials on clearance and nursed them back to health! I am on year 4 of my yard. It is nearly unrecognizable. I know your backyard will be the same. I have 2 cats that make my house a home. Both are rescues. The black cat in the video looks like my Binx!

You touched my heart with your story. Although I am now 70, I was 67 when I had to get Domestic Violence involved for help when my husband threatened to burn our home down if he didn’t get what he wanted in a separation. After 3 years and lots of money the divorce is finalized. I am starting over with my home with much less money. It was always a dark home, dark walls, brown everywhere. And although I love the colors of nature I need light to lift my spirit after years of abuse and sadness. I am going to @LittlePoet advice and paint the walls light. It is a struggle physically but will try to do it myself. And like you I need to be in my yard everyday to see how she is doing to. I don’t feel so alone knowing there are like minded women who if we all lived near each other would have a party everyday.

Love your videos! Your home is decorated beautifully! I would love to own my own home again, I miss that. To have a garden would be heaven and a yard for my little dog, Bebe. I live in a senior citizen apartment complex for the last 14 years. At my age, this is good for me. No maintenance and if there is, call the maintenance man. ((smiles)) I love thrift shops; I had one when I was young. Love finding those treasures!!! Thank you for your inspiration and advice! See you next week.

I saw your video last night, but I didn’t get to it until this morning. It is Sunday and I am drinking my coffee in bed with Otis🐶 as he and I are watching you and Desi❤ Otis had a best friend since he was a puppy named Cassius. He is a cat from next-door neighbor ❤ Desi is the king of the manor, the Lord of the land. I have five perennial gardens in my small little home but I’ve been there for 19 years. I was going to move after my husband died but I just love it here.. I have white and blue balloon flowers in the blooming right now and they’re absolutely gorgeous. My favorite is my lavender though; I have a lot of different kinds in my gardens. I don’t need a bigger house. I don’t need the best of everything, I am so grateful for what I have, and I’m able to stay in my house with Otis❤ I have a three floor townhouse that is my own and a lot of freedom to dig in the dirt❤ have a blessed Sunday and God bless you and Desi🙏

Susan, I lost my parents and brother in 10 months, i sold my dads house, my big house and settled in my husbands parents home after his Mom passed, only 5 months after my dad! We completely gutted and remodeled the whole house, it was a cottage type on the old farm where my husband grew up! It had 2 small bedrooms a kitchen and living room, and years ago my fil added a den in the back. It was a complete disaster, to say the least, plaster, cracks everywhere and the whole side wall completely collapsed when my husband was taking down the old stone!! I actually cried that day!!! This house is now absolutely beautiful, my husband and his cousin, who are both builders by trade, although my husband had a government job as he stopped building homes when my son was born, he still did all the work on everyone’s home in the family,, adding porches, decks, rooms etc. I was lucky that way and although we didn’t always agree about certain aspects of the remodel, I usually won because of my design, and organizing background, in other words, he generously gave in especially on my kitchen design, which is my favorite room in the house!!! It now has 4 bedrooms, 3 baths with only showers, no tubs, and a dining room which used to be the old kitchen!!! Lots of work went into this place, it’s been 7 yrs since we finished and I can honest say, I love it, but I’ll never do it again!!!!! All new hardwood, all new windows, new roof, new siding, new landscaping.

She took me thrifting as a teenager in old town Pasadena during the 70’s before the redevelopment. Such beautiful finds we bought when Colorado blvd was filled with thrift stores. I have spent the last year recovering from breast cancer, and husband who is not a gardener by any means set too and bought plants and flowers from me and did me lovely care we did not spend alot of money and this summer all plants and flowers have bloomed with a mass of colour .. Ever morning l look at the garden while eating my breakfast and during the days of fine weather I sit under my parasol and smile at my garden which h e christened Chris's Garden.. After it all came together it looks like I planned it that way. This summer I’ve been working on my yard and container gardening. Last weekend I put in lighting. I did it myself and I absolutely love it. It’s amazing how much joy our homes can bring.

I live in the house that my husband's grandparents bought in 1921. The house was 1 year old as was my father in law. It was actually too small for raising 4 children but is good for us now. Love the family history but wished we could have lived in a different town in a house we picked out together. It is better to count the blessings instead of the disappointments. Blessings to you and Desi from Midas and me.

sO CUTE how Dezzi seems to share your joy about the new home. I'm getting ready to move to my aunt's 1960 style house furnished with 1970's heavy furniture....just the opposite of my modern sleek style preference. You helped make me realize that I can make it work, no matter what. A positive attitude will get me threw the transition.

Hi lovely lady! Thank you for bringing the joy of your new home into mine!!! I've always dreamed of a h😮ome I could plant a tree and see it grow. I had many nice homes with swimming pools and was miserable, because of a bad marriage. Now I have a small apartment and love it. Everytime I come in I thank God for it, a warm cozy home, lamps with warm lighting, plants and little things that make me happy!!! Never feel alone because God is with me always. I too find unique things at the thrift store. Las Vegas has many, but stores where you live are more unique I think! Oh! forgot to tell you last time, pale green dress also looks lovely (so you!) not for the wedding though. ❤

It was adorable seeing Desi snoozing behind you on the couch and working his gentlemanly charms on your neighbor. I wish I could say my house is a home, but I've felt disconnected for years now. It's just a place to lay my head at night and keep my stuff. I didn't always feel this way; I used to be really into decorating. I had a boyfriend once pay me a very high compliment, telling me my place looked "serene." I'm not sure what's going on with me these days, but I just don't have the nesting instinct anymore.

It is so refreshing to see someone who loves decorations. I see so many videos about minimalism. I don’t understand it at all. They have bare counters, and maybe one thing on a table here and there. And maybe a small picture on the wall. There’s nothing pretty to look at. I love being surrounded by beautiful art and decorations. I think your house is beautiful. You did a fabulous job. Can you come and help me do mine? Lol. I really enjoyed this video.

Thank you for these helpful tips. I have downsized 2 times in the past year and a half. Once when my husband and I were going to retire to Tennessee, then when he passed away suddenly the age of 62, in December of 2021, I had to sell that house and move back to Maryland to be close to my family. For the past year, I rented a house and searched for a house to buy. I finally found my "forever" home at the age of 74 and settle on August 4th. I am excited to decorate it with some different things and put my own touch on it and the yard. It has been quite a difficult year, but I do see brighter times ahead. This video gave me hope.

Susan, YOU AMAZE ME!! I don't know HOW you put your new home together so fast! Where do you find your energy?? I've had visions and plans for how I want to change things in my apartment yet everything is still constantly waiting for me to get plugged in so my ambition can be energized. BTW, Desi looks so happy in his new home~! That, and your personal growth give me hope and visual fuel for thought to keep plugging away at my projects. - It's obvious that where you moved to was meant to be to your destination to settle down and call "HOME." YOU ARE JUST LIT WITH JOY AND RADIANT CONFIDENCE! Your exuberance and enthusiasm are contagious! As I am searching for a place that I too can move to where I can settle down and call home,.. Your move has also given me A "Road Map" to Hope. (I lived in Traverse City back when I was in HS many moons ago. I always remember how beautiful it was there.) I look forward to sitting down at the end of the day to watch your video as it has become my "Special Me Time Treat" to complete the week. Namaste!

Your tips are sensible and pleasant. Also, stick with a consistant decor without being too matchy, and keep clutter to a minimum. Don't push any furniture against walls. Pull things out a bit. Keep art and shelves at standing eye level. Leave some wall space rather than pack every wall with art. At least three sources of light. Reading lights, mood lights, ambient light. Ceiling lights can be harsh, casting shadows on guests faces. Conversation grouping of upholstered furniture. Try to avoid trends because they are in then out. Classic design endures. Less is more is still good design advice.

Linda Vater is a master gardener with a lot of years of experience but even with those years of experience she still buys beautiful coffee table size garden books for inspiration. She places the book she has purchased on a book stand and opens it to a specific page in her office to look at it when she is in there to enjoy.the beauty of it and to help inspire and give her ideas for her own beautiful garden. You may want to find beautiful inspiring garden books as well Susan and place it on a stand with an open page in your sun room to help give you ideas and inspire you with your own garden when you have your morning coffee and/or lunch. Linda changes the pages out when she is ready to view the beauty on another page in the book of the gardener who took pictures of their garden then displayed it to share the beauty with others in a book. You may find these same beautiful garden books on your thrifting journey to inspire you as well to view and appreciate and to give you inspiration and ideas as you transform and grow your own garden. I admire how green your grass is and the color of your plants and flowers as they grow and bloom in your backyard oasis. If you can decorate so beautifully as you do I am sure you will learn how to do it outside as well.

I used to watch videos of people minimizing and de-cluttering. Their homes look so stark and not homey. I think with so many beautiful and interesting things available why not beautify your world and make your home cozy and welcoming like your home is. I strive for that myself. The best compliments I get are from my grandchildren who say they love coming here. And I have many things to pass along to them someday to cherish so they have reminders of being here with me.

Yes, this place reflects my deepest love at this time in life for my grandchild. I must add, I wall papered and got a kitchen nook like 6 months ago. Pictures that reflect how I was feeling at the time. I can't put the figurines and things I love back out, because little one will play with them. It's ok for now.

I love your home and how to decorate it for you and your taste. My taste is the complete opposite lol My forest cottage is very tiny, very dark with dark antique furniture, dark thrifted decor items, black lace curtains, lots of green and greenery in the way of branches with faux ivy, real ivy in big green glass vases and greenery that I bring in from the forest etc I do have lamps and lots of candlelight. My cottage is utterly cosy and enchanting and I absolutely love it. It’s me in a nutshell, it reflects who I am. Everyone that visits my forest cottage is absolutely delighted and loves what they see. They say it feels like they’re in an Enchanted Wonderland. So Susan we can create whatever we desire how we desire that suits our own taste. I don’t follow any rules,I break them. I do it my way. P.S yay for the dress. I voted for it too.

I have a very large (12'W x 7'H) window in my living room. When I moved in (and for many years after) I put my sofa in front of that window. I felt I had no choice since fireplace and TV were on the opposite wall. Well, recently I made the decision to ditch the sofa and use two loveseats floating out in the room. Just like you said, I chose to "celebrate" that window. It's the nicest feature in the room and needs to be visible. It made a huge difference! Good advice!

Hi Susan. I loved your observation that if we're able to visualize something, we can then create it. Sometimes we have to work to cultivate a vision and sometimes it just pops into our heads full-blown. In a totally different context this week, I had an aha moment that being able to actively visualize something is like choosing a new mindset - it's inner work that changes everything on the outside without such mighty physical effort. I loved this video. You look so free and happy these days. I'm so glad for you. xo karen

Many things in your new home remind me of the design choices I've made for my new home in Kentucky. I've never had any blue furnishings in my life, but I decided to start with a blue sofa in this house. The first piece of furniture I purchased for here was an ivory leather chair and it was the only thing I had to sit on for a month. I just noticed you have an ivory chair with nailhead trim like mine. My old furniture was too big for this house, so it was all sold in the estate sale here I have white distressed furniture and I love it even though it is a far cry from what I've had in the past. I haven't decided on a coffee table or dining table and chairs yet, so I am just waiting until all the boxes are unpacked and I can remember what I brought with me. I am looking forward to visiting local thrift stores and have decided anything else I purchase will be thrifted. Thanks for so much inspiration.
