That's one big reason we stopped shopping in the warehouse clubs. We were spending more on groceries because they had so much on sale or cheap.

Absolutely!
I very rarely shop at ShopRite anymore. There's a Lidl across the street. I still check the ad, but unless they have a super good deal on meat, I don't bother to go in. As a widow and an empty nester, I don't spend enough to get the free turkey or ham. Plus, a turkey is just too big for me. I'm not a fan of turkey. But, they'll normally have hams on sale then, so I'll buy a couple. Not only does it give me the ham to eat, but I cook up the bone and make soup. I've been leaving extra meat. Gives me enough base for 2 types of soup.
Recently, I've been working on ways to reduce my grocery spending, and as part of a self-check, I did a pantry inventory. I was absolutely floored by the number of complete meals (main, side, bread/starch) that I ALREADY had on hand - yet I'd been visiting the grocery store weekly to buy things. I'm challenging myself to see how long I can go this month without making a trip to the grocery store for anything other than stuff we actually run out of. Once I've done that, I will probably try to use the reverse shopping list method to keep things in check. Thanks for the tips! Edit: apart from some quick trips for milk and eggs, I managed to go almost a whole MONTH without having to do a "real' shop. Going forward, I'm definitely going to try to be more mindful of what we already have before running to the store on a whim.

Make it like a game - how long can I go without a grocery trip. There are sites online where you type in what you have in the pantry and it gives you recipes for them.

@@rharvey2124 Yes, Allrecipes is the one I use, but I'm sure there are others, too.
I worked in a food processing plant, and all they do for the most part is change the box or can label. The product is the same.
We have a meal called ‘Scraps Friday’ (or sometimes ‘Scraps Saturday’) when I put any unused veg and some stock into my electric soup maker (best invention ever!) and 15mins later we have a healthy and tasty soup to fill us up before we go out.
The gift card idea is a great idea. Last time, I took cash for groceries because I lost my debt card. I actually used my calculator to add up my items and not use my entire cash allowance.
Great tips. I hate shopping. So I only shop 1x month for freezer, 1x every 3 mths for tins, dried goods, household etc and 1x every 2 weeks for fridge. ...not going to the shop weekly also stops me spending. I cook all meat, especially yellow label as soon as I get home.. eg chicken, mince meat (in microwave), then freeze. When cooking, I cook larger amounts eg fried onion and freeze.. then I have lots of ingredients cooked and ready to throw together into whatever dinner we want to eat. I make a dinner list, but it often changes due to changes in things happening day to day...so I love having cooked prepped ingredients so I can throw multiple different dinners together in 15mins every day.

OMG! You are so right! I spend so much more money when my daughters or husband go to the grocery store with me!😒
my kids refused own brand foods so I got cotainers for cereal and started by mixing own brand with a named brand product making sure I got rid of the packaging over time I increased the proportion of the own brand product and the kids never realised so now it's only own brand cereal. I do the same with other things frm ketchup to baked beans.

I like to set a budget, shop with cash, but I don't roll the savings into the next month; I save it. You'd be surprised how much you've accumulated at years end. As far as store brands vs. name brand, I save the boxes, containers, etc, of the name brand and transfer the store brand. If you don't tell him, he'll never know! 😂😂😂😂

Thank you so much for these ORIGINAL money saving tips. One of your tips I've been doing for a long time cuz it just made sense to me - see what I have in the refrigerator that needs to be eaten then buy what will compliment that for a meal, sometimes even two. Waste not, want not is what my daddy always told us. Thanks Dad ❤
Dollar Tree sells all sizes of reusable bags for $1.25. What a good idea on reusing old t shirts 😊😊
You’ve got some really good ideas that I haven’t heard others mention. I particularly like the store brand gift card idea. It eliminates fumbling with cash and forces you to be mindful of stretching it to cover the whole month. Thanks for this video!

Due to a large home improvement, I received a $500. Gift card for my local grocery store. I used it only for fresh produce in season. I stretched that gift card over 4 months. It surely eliminated my splurge impulse shopping.
For people who have chickens.. I use to buy a discount item eg cereal to find the family did not like it, no problem give it to the chickens, therefore eliminating waste. 😊

Family woukd go hungry at my house...eat what I give you.
Don’t buy brands, buy vegetables, vegetables, fruits…no brands to worry about.
I've been going on the store app, putting everything in the cart that I need (amounts and all) then I go through the store and delete the item as I pick it up. Along with that I have a calculator out so I add up everything I place in the cart. That helps when you see the item you wanted to get but then you can look just in the immediate area for a better price or quality item. Then whatever you pick up, add it to the total on the calculator and back to the list.
I love the reverse shopping list. I just bought butter today and put it in the fridge with two other unopened boxes of butter…. So I’ll be baking. 😂

incredible....such simple ideas that make good sense and such an impact......thank you, I needed someone to tell me this!!! Using up out pantry items are key!! I live in Florida.....I try to eat out of freezer during storm season...when electric goes out and we have to dump our food....ouch!!!, so I truly try to remind myself while shopping...:do i realy need this or do I already have this in freezer.....for every one else north of Florida, reminder yourself the same so you dont deal with freezer burn WASTE!!!! Again, thank you!

These are great hacks! I prefer to shop alone. I usually go for the more frugal brand. I like the idea of buying a gift card for the grocery store. Paper bags are still available at no charge in my area but I like to bring my own because they are sturdier.
Thank you for the ideas…I started a couple months ago on the Walmart app for ordering groceries & then pick a 1 hour window when I’m in town (town is 30 mins from our home) & just drive to the back for pick up. It saves me both money & time & also helps me stick to my list because I’m not walking around the store isles

Yes on the reusable bags! I have also found that I only buy what I need when bag space is limited. Canvas bags are strong and durable!
"ON SALE does not mean that you're supposed to have it" 😂😂😂 I like you 😊
Another tip if you see a food product especially a name brand ( example, Hot pockets) at Dollar tree they're usually 1.25 versus 4.99 at shoprite I strictly buy bowl n basket brands except Mac and cheese then I prefer stoufers
I have 3 laundry baskets in the back of my car. When I unload my cart I put my groceries with or without bags in the baskets. 1) the groceries don't roll around in the back; 2) I can carry the basket (actually I put the basket in my wagon) into the house. 3) I have a basket for cold foods, one for cans and bottles and one for eggs, bread fruit. 4) If I am at a store that doesn't provide bags I just sort my groceries into the baskets. This is a great time saver and prevents damage to cans, etc. I put water and the like in first and the baskets on top. So, also a space saver. Love your video, and subscribed for more. Thanks

The grocery store gift card is great idea!
All great tips.I will just add that for those who don't drive at night which as you get older and with the new halogen lights becomes a thing. Know that if you shop first thing in the morning a lot of markdowns will still be there. Also stores like Dollar tree dont stay open late so you will find markdowns are completed by about 11 am or noon. So that is a good time to shop at those type of stores. Yes even the 99 store markdown items

If you shop at Hannaford’s, Nature’s Promise, and Taste of Inspiration are their two upscale store brands, and (imo) much better than the basic store brand.

Another tip I can add: only buy numerous amounts of one item if you’re going to eat all of it before it expires. For example, my best friend buys name brand cold cereal when it’s on a deep discount. But, he’ll buy ten big boxes at a time (or over several trips). The problem is, there’s only himself and his son in the house. You just know not everything will get eaten before at least a few boxes expire. Same with Arizona teas in the gallon jugs. Last count, he had 15 in the house. 🤦🏻♀️ Granted, some things, like meats, can be frozen, but not those two items.

While I do feel that the apps tend to discriminate against older and/or less tech savvy people, they are very beneficial. I’m a professional reseller and am always surprised at fabulous deals you can find at unconventional places. If totally unsure of the price of an item, I use the Walmart app to scan the bar code or look up the item. So a stores app can be used in other stores for those price comparisons.

I know I'm always helping my mother with getting or using apps, but she's always glad to get the discounts after she learns how to use them. I just showed her how to use the scan feature on the grocery store and Walmart apps too!

Good one; I didn’t know that!
You have some great cost savings ideas! We often buy store brand instead of name brand items. People don't realize how often the item is the same product! This is especially true of items that have the store name (think bread, milk). You'll learn quickly which items are just as good for much less cost. I really appreciated the reverse shopping list idea.

6:25 😂 Oh, this brings back memories for me. My late husband Tim and I would go around and around about this, *ESPECIALLY* when it came to macaroni and cheese. I grew up eating store brands, but not Tim. So nothing else but *KRAFT* macaroni and cheese in the *BLUE* box would do. Thankfully, he recognized that I was much better at handling money than him, so he put me in charge of handling our finances!

Also i buy stuff only on sale. I got the app called flipp and all the neighborhood stores will pop up there. If something is really good deal, i stock up. I save money on fuel (and groceries if needed but usually use it on gas) by getting gift cards (for the stores and food places I'm already planning on going to and have money set aside for) at a local grocery store that offers fuel perks and percentages off of future grocery purchases. The store also has eGift cards for a lot of the places now, so you can save fuel from not having to drive to the store, but still get the points to use towards either future grocery or fuel purchases.
