Uh, I could never call being beaten by NZ an honour. Not sure I would ever even enjoy being beaten by any team particularly the ABs but what I did have for that man was respect. He was a fantastic athlete. Just a pity he didn't play for South Africa although I think if he did he would probably get a little chirped at for being a model. Not sure.

@@JayKay-on2gr for me, my favourite game from Dan Carter was the second test in the 2005 lions/NZ series. It was raining heavily and thus NZ's usually incredible running game was neutralized. Keep in mind, this was when Carter was still really young and only recently put in as a fly-half (I think the Crusaders still played him at 13 at the start of the season). What followed was just a masterclass of tactical and positional kicking and Carter cemented himself that day in my mind as probably the best rugby player I've ever seen.

His performance in the second test vs The British Lions in 2005 is the best individual performance ever. I thought it all that time ago watching it live, and still do now years later.

He broke us into pieces in 2015 quarter final but it was so great to witness this pure talent. A legend and unfortunately a type of player that we wont see before long

What I like most about carter , There were many different layers of excellence in his game , the highlights reel will show the flashy stuff understandably, but he could play in the trenches too and steer the team around the park when risk’s weren’t required. Most 10s excell in one or the other not both .

@Mac Cleba You've just spewed a load of names out. Barry John is just a ridiculous suggestion. Great in the amateur era but Carter would have played him off the park - standards had moved on so far by the time the latter was playing. Have a look at the appalling defending in John's day and the amout of errors made generally. Carter was better than all of the above - easily. He's the most complete back ever, and he completed the best individual performance ever in the 2nd Test against the British Lions in 2005.

...yeah exactly, there are plenty of masterful examples that leave most of these for dead, but those matches against the Lions were on another planet altogether

Nothing here to rival Barry John in New Zealand in 1971 with the British Lions. His panache almost makes Dan Carter look pedestrian and not sure if Carter even demonstrates the same skill level as Phil Bennett or Jonathan (Jiffy) Davies at his nonchalant peak.

I realised how Dan Carter was such a good kicker. It helps having such soft comfortable undies like he used when modeling that it freed up the full movement range of his legs. He had no problem using the full extent of his leg reach when kicking at the post. Some people chafe or are tight. But Dan always managed to look after himself 100% which is why he was a phenomenal kicker.

I never knew that DC played centre until I saw this clip. Obviously that was very early in his career but he was still brilliant. The best fly-half I've ever seen!

phil bennett and Bary John weren't too shabby either.

This is just highlights from RWCs unfortunately. Also of course his defensive prowess in tacklingx running down opponents and defensive organization was also amazing as was his attacking vision and setting up the attack. His tactical kicking amazing and also not shown. But yes what is shown he was also amazing at. A truly complete 10 and a GOAT of backs.

Remember him at 12 and Carlos Spencer at 10. One time Dan played 9. He’s definitely no.10 in all time world XV.

All Black Richie Mo'unga is one of the worlds best number 10 now! If not the best! And still getting better. Yes Dan Carter was a great number 10 back in the day and others too.

Players have had a year or few games where they play at his level, but he was the only one to keep it consistent. Top player there's been so far.

We are blessed to be two great rugby union nations. This year the Bokke played with absolute focus and unified self control and It is our turn to be humbled and in awe, what an incredible final. South Africa have now got back to back RWC winning titles and have always been one of two best in the world - we knew you’d be back. We wouldn’t want any other team to be on the journey with. Love NZ.
