Want to know how to score higher or how to maintain speed and balance in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1+2? This video goes over the basics that have been true to THPS since THPS3.
I should clarify a couple things:
- The type of manual or grind does not effect your balance differently from one another.
- Yes, initiating a grind increases speed, but staying on a rail does not decrease speed unless it's an uphill grind. However, it's still not beneficial to stay on rails for over .5 seconds in 20 million+ combos.
- Binding special manuals/grinds/lip tricks is ok if you're going for scores under 20 million. You should bind the tricks that are comfortable for you.
-- If you're going to go for scores over 20 million, I'd strongly advise against using them because it eats away at precious grind balance meter time. The longest manuals/grinds you'd want to do are .5 seconds or under, so knowing that: you might get 1,500~ for one grind or one manual at most.
TL;DR: It is more beneficial for 20 million+ scorers to use their special manual and grind trick slots for special air tricks.

I should mention that this is not privileged information from being a THPS dev in the past. The hardcore THPS community has known about these since 2003 for THPS3 and THPS4 and above.
When going for high scores in the TH community, these are things that we collectively find and share with each other to score higher.
There are many more tips I could give, but I feel that these are the most essential for anyone wanting to learn. Some other things have changed from game to game, but these 10 have remained true since 2004.

This is my tip for balancing. Example: Your balance is starting to run out in your manual or grind and the meter is heavily in one direction when you jump out of it. The next time you go back into that grind/manual/lip push your balance to go the opposite direction hard before you start the trick and you will never insta bail soon as you try to do that trick again.

That shoulder buttons to spin has been hardest for me because I'm so used to just holding the direction of my flip trick to keep a 180-360 going. When grinding, this also gives me a wider variety of grind tricks. But I've been able to hit 1 million without that or any specials of any kind, just making good use of gaps and the short manual/grind times as mentioned here. These extra tips are looking to take me to the next level! Thanks man!

What I would love to see is basic combos that are easy to practice that eventually lead to bigger, more complicated combos. Its easy for Andy to show these combos because he has so much practice and time into the game, break it down a bit to make it easier to digest. Dude is amazing at the game but when you are capable of doing an 800k combo without trying, you are obviously God like tier to my beginner tier.

Wow.. The whole time I was playing I was relying on special grinds and manuals. I feel silly now. Thank you. Now it would be great if you could upload tip videos for each level like good lines that can go forever and stuff like that.

Great vid man, is hard for me to use l1 and r1 to spin because of muscle memory, but i'll keep trying.

I'm in the same situation. I played THPS a ton when I was younger and always used dpad to spin. Today I've just been doing some free skate sessions and brute-forcing against my muscle memory using R1/L1 to spin. Feels like I'm relearning the game all over again, but hopefully at some point my brain just switches over.

Eventually you get used to your finger pressing on L1 every time you jump, plus it adds to your multiplier. I sucks at tying to spin with R1 tho I only is L1
