I bought the EOS R because of its 2 unmatched features for my trip to Kruger National Park. I have the EF 100-400mm f4.5-5.6 IS USM (with adapter) attached to this camera 100% of the time of my entire time inside the park. What I love the most about this camera for handhold wildlife of shooting is that when I softly press the shutter button down halfway, the camera immediately captures the image into its memory buffer, when I press the shutter button down all the way, it finally saves the image from the buffer onto the memory card. This feature is awesome! Combining with the lens IS, this feature completely eliminates camera shake issue. Camera usually shakes when you hit the bottom of the shutter button, but Canon's engineers figured out this little trick by starting to buffer the image before the button hits the bottom is ingenious. None of my thousands of images comes out blurry due to camera shake. My second favorite feature is the ability to use my thumb to move/drag the single focusing point to the animals' eye quickly is fabulous. The number of focus points feel like infinite on this camera. Make no mistake, even with all of the great features this camera has to offer, taking picture of wildlife is a hand-full. My hands have to constantly control the zoom, move the focusing point, compose, level, and changing the exposure control within 1 sec before pressing the shutter button. If I were using my EOS 5D IV, getting photo results that I have gotten would have been almost impossible. The sharpness is unbelievable comparing to my EOS 5D IV. All of the animals eyes come out tacked sharp. I can literally count the number of eyelashes! Heck, when zoom in, I can see the reflection of my car in the animals eyeballs!

Very nice video but you left out one of the most important features of this camera. You failed to mention the adapters. In fact, your only mention of adaption of lenses was to say you couldn't use the control ring with adapted lenses. I use the control ring with every lens I use. Canon released three adapters with this camera; a basic one, one with a built-in control ring so you can map that for ISO as I do on every adapted EF lens and one with a slot for a variable ND filter or polarizer. These are some of the most important features of this camera. Please try them out.

Very well thought out review. I appreciate hearing from actual experience over time - the good and the bad. Finally a reviewer who notes how a flip out screen can get in the way! I use an L bracket and it really gets in the way of that. The approach of Fujifilm with the X-T3 and Panasonic with the S1R is much better, with two axes of rotation on the back screen. My Olympus EM1 ii is a pain with its flip out screen, but I rented a Lumix S1R for a week and really like that screen for shooting on a tripod with L bracket.

Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Would have loved to have heard a little more A/B comparisons from your Sony & Nikon experiences as well. I had the RP but wasn't impressed with the sensor overall, but loved the new FV mode and had forgotten how nice Canon's menus were... plus the touch screen functionality and implementation is outstanding. One thing you should add in an on screen note is that one of the Canon Adapters does have the new control ring. Canon's R Adapters are phenomenal, well thought out, which for all of us budget conscious types, the availability and quality of used adapted Canon glass is a big selling consideration. I also think Canon's App utility is one of the most stable and easiest for getting pics to your phone/social media, only Panasonic beats it. I'm still on the fence. I rented a Sony A7III to rule it out, and actually really enjoyed using it, just did not like the EVF, a discounted Sony A7RIII may be a consideration. My favorite out of camera colors and pics are the Z6 with their 24-70 kit lens... beauty of a lens, but post can fix everything color related now. The vari-angle back screen is also a major selling point for me. After renting the Sony, I see why so many people prefer just a flip up/down screen as it's faster and more conspicuous especially for urban/wedding environments. Most of my shooting is landscape and stills/semi stills so having the ability to view odd and hard angle compositions is more important. I also think the sensor in the Canon R is the perfect balance of resolution to file size. Thanks again!

Yah, people keep complaining about joystick, but the touch and drag for me is amazing. Only wished it would acquire focus as soon as lift your finger of screen. I am working with EF lenses on mine, with the control ring adaptar, also using it for ISO (to prevent accidental iso changing i set it to work with half shutter press). I had set my touchbar as a shortcut for focus picking as the EF lenses dont have the auto zoom set the RF can give. Also, to prevent for accidental use I locked it to the lock button. I wish for a touch and drag option to “the thirds”, adding up to half and quarter screen dizes. Also the aquire focus with finger lift in touch and drag. To pair with the RP, the bracketing focus. And, last but not least, a built in intervalometer for stills!

Canon EOS R owner here. Very comprehensive review. Thanks! A few thoughts: I do not believe that the electronic stabilization works for photos - Just video. Multi-Function Bar - People like to hate it, but I've gotten used to it. Swipe to change AF mode, left tap to turn eye detect on or off, right tap turns histogram on/off (I use that all the time!). Adjusting ISO - The touch screen is not the only other option for quickly adjusting ISO. You can use the multi-function button (Not to be confused with bar.) near the shutter button. Once selected, 5 functions can be selected by the rear wheel and then adjusted by using the front main dial. This adds a step to the dedicated control ring, but since I do not have that, has worked well as I usually leave the function on ISO so press the M fn button and scroll with the front wheel.

I really wish they would just let you use the app to set that stuff to any command on the camera... it would be so awesome to be able to sit on the couch with the iPad and do setups (that are able to be saved and shared). None of the companies allow you to totally 100% customize, which is a bit unfortunate. That being said, this is more customizable than any other hybrid out there. I have every mode set uniquely for specific photos and videos locations (I have weekly shoots in the same locations).

I have used a 6d for portrait photography for 4 years and just switched to the eos r. I would never switch back, I just like it a lot, but that's not to say it's better than sony or nikon because I haven't tried them. Eye detect is an absolute game changer for me, which wouldn't come into your decision so I'm a bit biased. Overall noise, colour depth dynamic range I think is just not really a factor for me, and I can't detect a difference between the eos r and the 6d. The 6d creates photos that are just as good, but the higher definition touch screen, the EVF and the overall build quality are all better and more exciting for me on the eos r (not so important for the final product, although let's not underestimate user experience for the tools we use for creation as a factor). Even the supposedly awful touchbar is useful for me. A dial would have been better, but I use it for manual white balance adjustments and it saves me time and precision is really not important for white balance for me in camera, I'll tweak later in raw it's just to adjust for changing colour temperature on the fly to make the images look right in camera for clients and of course myself but if I miss by 100-300k it really doesn't matter. ISO is another matter altogether. I have never pressed swiped the touchbar by accident, and I leave the left right functions unassigned because frankly the useful features I would like to map there are unavailable. 100% happy with the purchase, but from a functionality perspective it's the autofocus that makes it better for my work, everything else wouldn't necessarily be worth a $3k (canada) upgrade, but it is undeniably a fun camera to use, I look forward to shooting just to get to use it now. I'm sure that will fade but it's a nice bonus to be excited about the camera in essence. That being said it's my first brand new canon, as I've bought used for the last 3 bodies so it's a bit of a milestone thing for me. Although, fun fact, the unit they sent me was defective, every thousandth shot or so came out with strange image corruption artifacts. They are replacing it with a new unit though and it should be exchanged within a week and they were pretty fantastic about the process. Still not very confidence inspiring considering I've never had an issue with every other canon I've used over hundreds of thousands of shots and they were all used!

It seems like mirrorless cameras are there way things are going. However, the EOS R is on it's first generation and the rate these cameras come out might wait for gen 2 in the meantime I will most likely pick up a used 6d mark 2 and focus on better glass like a tilt-shift or 16-35mm and larger battery powered lighting I am looking at the EXPLR 600

Low light af is really good if you've always used a cropped sensor like me. The buttons are different but they're pretty easy to adjust to. Eye af is really fun. I think they should have started this camera out at $1500 with the adaptor and it would have sold much better in the beginning.

Nice video. I think Canon crippled the 4K because they want to protect their Cinema cameras. I think they have the technology for preventing overheating.

I would like to se a digital camera that was made just for photography, ie a camera (Leica-like type) that was just aperture, shutter and ISO and maybe a exp comp dial. Thats it, nothing else, just the simple and basic art of photography! No large menus or settings options, video and what have you. Just an amazing sensor and some amazing glass too! Thats what I would like to see, but not Leica prices! ;)

You can customize something like 10 buttons... I think you did a good job covering the features but this one you simply got wrong. I also would like to have more buttons, like one dedicated to ISO or so, but come on! ;)

I'm glad they updated the parlor trick of eye-autofocus (as physics makes it not matter beyond 8 feet or so unless you're using a super telephoto at 2.8 or something). Originally they just had it track the eye to the proper distance... that darn Sony marketing made Canon "show their work" by putting the square there. lol... Sony markets their APSC as "being able to get closer to your subject", while bashing Canon for "that crop makes 4k useless", lol... I wish Canon had Apple's marketing. They remind me of each other, but Apple is the master marketer... always behind in specs, but manage to spin the heck out of it.

As Chad Cohoon said earlier, the new Fv mode is great! This is the best groundbreaking functional feature I've seen in many years. Almost nobody talks about it, but once you understand what is going on in this new mode, you will rarely use any other mode . . . .

Kepano 808: r u trolling? I hope u r, because you’re comparing a $2350 camera with a $5500 camera (in AUD). And guess what, they don’t compare. Just like asking a car enthusiast comparing a Corolla to a BMW m3. You get what you pay for! Horses for courses.

You have not got Firmware 1.4.0 then WHat are you on 1.0.0 ? Change ISO on the touch bar The Battery is LP-E6N an updated version 30min limit EU law, a device capable of more than 30 minutes of continuous video recording classes the device as a ‘video camera’, placing it into the higher Tax bracket.

Bummer on the taxes. I don’t really care about a recording limit because you can easily get around that and get better capture quality with an external recorder. I was not on firmware 1.4 when I filmed this video. Firmware 1.4 came out a week later.

The battery life is not good relative to any of the Canon DSLRs. I get about 900 shots out of a 7DII or 6DII. You can't even get 400 from the EOS R.
