10 Things Marvel Wants You To Forget About Deadpool

    Deadpool's been suicidal for a long time, including a coming where he tries to kill himself in a bunch of different ways. IIRC: In the early days he not only had super healing and super cancer, but was in a constant state of sheer agony which is a major contributing factor into how he went so crazy that he started hallucinating, could shirk off injuries, could push himself past normal human physical limits with a complete disregard for normal self-preserving inhibitors, and relied on his sense of humor to keep some semblance of sanity. He's also fully aware that the readers and Marvel Comics are literally what's keeping him alive whether he likes it or not. Deadpool's combat abilities are less about inconsistency in writing and more about how much attention he's paying. He regularly doesn't take things seriously, and as a result he'll drop his guard a lot or even slip up. When he gets serious is when shit gets real because he's fully focused and not playing games any more, putting a nightmarish tactical mind to use. Deadpool's daughter is a regular recurring part of main continuity and is a welcome addition to his place in the Marvel world, immediately thinking that Deadpool being her dad was one of the coolest things ever. Anybody who screws with that girl is in for a very bad time. Actually, nobody shies away from him being a Deathstroke ripoff. They've even mentioned it in the Deadpool comics. Most of his comics are 0-seriousness and, yeah, can be skipped. A lot of them are fun but silly and stupid, but some include some incredible scenes like Ghost Rider trying to use the Penitent Stare on Deadpool and it backfiring. The silliness is what sells the most comics, but Deadpool has had a lot of really good serious comic runs that remind readers of his darker depressing side, which I think are helped by how silly the majority of his comics are since it puts them and everything he does into perspective of his psyche. Even at his best he's still a broken man, but that won't stop him from breaking everybody else. Extra Fun bit: Deadpool has so far been the only person to kill the Marvel Universe who didn't need help. Punisher was constantly bailed out of incarceration and Wolverine was teleported out when things got too bad, but Deadpool was by himself and murdered everybody with brutal flair and ingenuity.

    I agree with you the stupid video game obviously made people think that he was a misogynistic perverted family Guy type of superhero who is obsessed with Mexican food, when he's more like a Rick and Morty type of superhero, he's a tragedy behind the comedy character and I wish that public perception wasn't actually the famous one (Memepool).

If I said "well some people didn't like the movie because they don't like Deadpool, or because they had a problem with how this was done, or think this should have been done like that instead, etc., etc." it wouldn't be very amusing, now, would it? And I'm certainly not a "Deadpool fan boy;" I don't care one way or another about Deadpool.

    Deadpool isn't a mutant and did you really just say Deadpool isn't supposed to be dark? I have a trade of one of his early runs and despite some comedy it's pretty serious with Deadpool wanting to be a good guy but feeling like he's only meant for killing, meeting the scientist who fucked him up in the first place and showing just how traumatized he actually is, kidnapping a blind old lady and abusing her to the point where even while acting like his friend, she's still scared for her life and finally a Daredevil villain. Typhoid Mary fucking with him both mentally and quite literally when she rapes him. Deadpool can and has pulled off dark stories, while a comedic element needs to stay, I much prefer a serious Deadpool story to "Memepool" where he's solely joking around.

    Those who see that Marvel gets a lot of credit as “much better then DC”, like myself, do care. Marvel goes a childish way with a lot of their characters: They take a character from DC then change their looks, their name, slightly, then throws a bunch of extra powers to offset the weaknesses of said DC characters. Some of Marvel characters are original, I grant you. Also, it would be foolish not to admit that DC has ripped off a few DC characters, however Marvel’s rip-offs of DC are far more common. It is ridiculous.

    Great video, but there is one thing that is wrong: Deadpool is not a mutant. Or at least none of his powers come from an X gene. He got the healing factor from weapon X so he is a "mutate" like Spiderman, ie his powers come from a mutation caused by an outside source later in life. I believe at one point it is hinted/ joked that his cancer was actually his mutant power, but this has never been confirmed.

    I actually think that the uncertain origin adds to the understanding of DP's extreme of the wall personality and behaviors. In the beginning of the comics he was confident and sure of himself but as he got destroyed by T-Ray and told that he stole his identity it made him more uncertain and somewhat maniacal. And then we learn about how everybody constantly messes with his head with mind control, brain washing, conflicting stories and a lot of mental abuse and drugging. His psyche is very obviously battered and I like to think that he understands just as much as we all do, which really isn't anything. To comprehend would detract from his appeal, at least that's what I believe.

    It did have some of that darkness, especially when Wade was stuck in the Weapon X program. I liked that they went there in the movie. But I mostly mean Deadpool himself- in the comics (namely Joe Kelly's run), he's always walking the line between a psychotic comedian and a completely homicidal sociopath.

  • @shiravalen

    @shiravalen

    I think his madness tends to inherently suggest massive psychological trauma, including the effect of one's body being basically a visceral affront to nature to the core, with no part healthy and proper to escape to or find solace in. And the fact that his existence is perpetual even if he wanted to off himself. No escape, save madness. Feeds right into it. It's a kind of apt tragedy all in all. And gives some depth alongside the silly side, as far as I'm concerned. I personally relate to the pathos of 'madness' in a certain way, and I'm sure some other people do too. I think madness is inherently dark, when you think about it, in terms of the human experience. To me it implies your mind basically broke and violently imploded on itself irreparably due to not being able to handle the reality of circumstances. A willful escape into manic delusion against the true structure of reality, reason, and humanity. Honestly it can be a tempting road, even though it's fruitless and false. Anyway what I can say is, it'd be best if the trauma of his backstory did justice to the depth of his madness. Anything less feels cheap, forced. But yeah I think I can appreciate the combination of silliness with that undertone of tragedy. Actually now I kind of want to see a really sophisticated take on Deadpool exploring the dark nature of his madness, with the usual antics twisting the pathos all the more. But I guess that's not how everyone enjoys him. His murderous sociopathy is usually conveniently treated with tailored circumstance as to not be as disturbing as it truly is. To give him an illusion of humanity, but I don't think that's truly consistent with his psyche. If he really had any true scruples, principles to hold onto, he wouldn't really be mad, would he, just an eccentric human in a costume. But that would make people very uncomfortable to think about.

  • @ravenfrancis1476

    I don't think a story with Deadpool really needs to have that darkness as its main theme though. Sure, having it is nice, but if its constantly shoved in our faces just has "hey look how serious and dark this otherwise fun and goofy character is guys we can be serious please take us serious" written all over. The best Deadpool stories are the ones where the darkness and self-esteem issues are in the background, and more subtle than Wade just flat out being like "Well, I hate myself. I want to die".

  • @bisexualmajima
    @bisexualmajima7 жыл бұрын

    But...him being a 'villain' (do agenda-less mercenaries really count as 'villains'?) before is one of the things that makes him more compelling... that really isn't something they're trying to cover up at all. In his most renowned arcs/series like Joe Kelly's run in the 90s and Cable and Deadpool arguably the best things about the character is the redemptive shit; him trying to move on from his past, trying to be someone better than just a moral-less hired gun and trying to be a hero despite being a fuck up and despite the bucketloads of shit he gets for all his efforts and despite the fact that almost all the other heroes around hate him save for Cable, Siryn and a handful of others who are trying to get him to be someone better and believe in himself. Hell, even in the most recent issue of Spiderman/Deadpool (sorry if any of this is incorrect; I don't really read it that much as I don't particularly enjoy it) currently he's trying to wane Peter away from the idea of killing Itsy Bitsy because of how much he idolises Spiderman's ethics and morals and he doesn't want to think that was all for nothing and he doesn't want to think that his hero is a moral-less killer...like he was, like the person he doesn't want to be. So, uh, yeah, that last point seems pretty off the mark to me.

    "I'm the best deadpool fan.. I only saw the movie." You did not even know him before the movie and now you're the best fan? Maybe a movie fan... But not a true fan. I'm not saying you have to read every comic since the character was created, but atleast do some research before considering yourself as a fan. Yes, some people didn't know about the character and now they're big fans, but they took the time to read some comics to know more about the character. That's okay. But saying you're a fan of a 40 years old character just because you saw a movie is a bit stupid. Sorry for bad english.

    Wow didnt know this. Yeah i found out that SOOOOOOO many characters are rip offs, DC and marvel seem to love ripping each other off lol. And were there evenany lawsuits and legal battles from this? Its weird.

    Weird. I totally just recognized your background music from one of my all time favorite videos, about how Oreos are Unmade. Is that the generic music supplied by some video editing program?

    I've never read a deadpool comic so far that I didn't like, so from personal experience I disagree that the comics are crap, just don't take them too seriously. So far I've read deadpool kills marvel, killustrated, kills deadpool, back in black, dead presidents, vs carnage, and spiderman, and the good the bad and the ugly. Are any of these thought to be crap or have I just chosen some of the few good ones?

    I'd suggest the Classic series from Joe Kelly (don't read the Priest ones, those are crap).

    Technically, he can do that because of a belt, but I haven't read the comics, so I don't know if that's an official thing, or something only from the videogame

    yeah the teleporting is a gadget he has, not a power. much like his many, many weapons and a technological 'bag of holding', if memory serves

    I think you hate it comics because you only hear people say how great the movie was. So you presume every trait in the comic that is different from the movie is trash.

    A way to kind of kill dead pool: keep him under a super heavy object, or undergound and he'd be trapped, but keep healing in constant pain

    I would argue about not wanting "darkness" in Deadpool's character, his fantastic solo run had a lot of that in the 90's, and a lot of heart too.

    isnt deadpool the only comic char that knows he is a comic char? so he does not need a background or any set of standards or rules ... at least thats what i was thinking. And everybody forgets about Lobo tho ...

    The Super strength through the healing factor sort of makes sense. Strength is gained through the body repairing damage done to itself through exertion (exercise) since his is so fast he could gain strength that same way extremely quickly.
