10 things I'm not buying in 2024 | saving money & financial minimalism

SO excited to share this year's video & list of 10 things i'm not buying in 2024! this list of things i stopped buying as a minimalist was so fun to make (and i'm actually SO excited to share my video on things i'm investing in this year - the list is gooood and i'm so excited about it). these things i dont buy anymore are all things that certainly hold value, but for me, they don't hold enough value to make sense.
in particular, things i stopped buying to save money are items like 1, 3, and 4 - all things i'm truly not being benefitted by owning. i'm really excited to keep exploring minimalism and money and financial minimalism this year, as well as ways to save money & sharing more of my minimalist journey!

hey gang!! thanks so much for being here & watching 🤍 wanted to add a quick note just because i want to be super mindful of finance videos as i know it can be kind of a tricky topic. in no way is this video intended to shame certain purchases/categories, or project my goals/things i'm working towards if they don't resonate with you. intentional living is such a personal thing based on your values, and this is just my way of trying to share ideas/resources and things i'm doing to hopefully be more intentional with my spending this year! ok that's all love ya

In a prosperous society where there is material abundance, people tend to confuse their wants with needs. Learn the difference between the two and you will be far better off spiritually and financially.

As far as non physical gifts, I feel like gift cards are so underrated. I bought my sister an air bnb gift card. It was a perfect gift of “experience” and it will help fund a vacation instead of adding clutter to her home :)

One thing I've learned this year is that while I don't think I'm a huge impulse buyer, when there is something I want I have trouble being patient. When birthdays or holidays come around, I have nothing on my wishlist and family just buys me random things. I want to be more patient. When gift-giving occasions come around, I want to just be honest with people about what I want. (and if I don't get it, I have to save up or wait until next year!).

Tips only work when taken into personal perspective, what works for you may not apply for the next person. 1. Practice "selective spending" I don't think " no spend" works out much. 2. Scale of preferences on goals and even bills. 3. Save, no matter how little the percentage a nd lastly invest; that's the only way to grow it without putting in the hours. Hope this works for you 😉

Accepting that my "now" home will not be my "forever" home has drastically changed what I spend my money on for decorating our home. Also, me thinking that my house has to look like it's in a magazine when realistically it needs to have function, be free of clutter and peaceful for my husband and I. Abandoning the 1000% aesthetic all the time mindset has saved me thousands.

You are so wise to recognize that people your age want their dream life NOW. It means so much more when you work up to it. Also, I raised my kids in a home with things that wouldn’t upset me if they got messed up. It was as stress free as new parenthood COULD be.

Non physical gifts like inviting someone for breakfast/lunch/dinner, a massage, a therapy session, an experience outdoors like hiking and bringing snacks or a gym class is also a great option. Over cluttering really messes up with my head too, up to a point where if something is not in its place or there's a bunch of things on top of the counter, I just need to clean up for my mental health. Some people may not understand, like my mom, but honestly, it helps me with my peace of mind.

I love what you said about not having your forever furniture/dream home at 24. When we were first married at 22 we were so mismatched in our house. We had a hand me down couch, no kitchen table and chairs for awhile, a bed, a bookcase and kitchen supplies from wedding gifts. We’re now 15 years in and we’re just now having some things that should stick with us for the long haul. It has saved us a LOT of money and saved us lots of frustration bc, yes kids can be pretty artsy on many different types of canvasses, let alone normal wear and tear 😅

Adventures List (specific itinerary of a great day with all the names, places, reservations. Along with a disposable camera 9. A favor (close friends & family): I'll take their car to the shop/washed, babysit, clean their house 10. I love the gift conversation! I personally hate giving and receiving gifts, I would so much rather just have a fun experience together. It’s good that you told people in advance that you prefer to not receive physical gifts. It’s just so tricky because I have some family members whose “love language” is gift giving (and receiving) and I don’t want to offend. 🙈 Around the holidays, food gifts are great minimalist gift ideas. My mom gifts people all year round goodies from her garden!

You are going on the right direction for a young women. When i was in my younger year I spent so much money on luxury purses, quality furniture, and clothing. Now that I am 55 finally realized that I waisted so much money on unnecessary stuff. I'm in the process of going minimalism, it feels great not to have so much stuff around the house. Decluttering is so easy for me!

Yess! Two years ago I was scrambling to buy my parents a gift. I was just grabbing junk. Once I had the “as seen on tv” item in my hand I said enough is enough! I only buy a physical gift if I know it’s something they 100% want or need. No guessing! I generally prefer to gift time spent. Dinner, activities, vacations together.

A few years ago I noticed I had many mugs… the way they look like clutter or when I see one I want to use and can’t reach or find one I haven’t used in a while… well… I decided to purge them and also to group them by season to be able to rotate them. I store them in small boxes and now it takes me like 5 minutes to get “new” cups for the season. To me, choosing a DIFFERENT mug every day is a part of my morning routine and I enjoy it.

The product multiples thing is such a problem!!! I used to do this so much, and this was back when I was changing my preferences often, so I would find a new favorite foundation, for example, and then I didn't know what to do with the three duplicates of the old foundstion i had! So wasteful and tough to store! I've since stopped it all, which has been a relief! 😅

I'm the same way with diving head first into hobbies! Something I've been doing to minimize spending on a new hobby that I'm not quite sure of yet is checking to see if my local library offers any of the tools/ machines / supplies for the hobby and trying a free class or a session with the machine there. I tried that recently by using their sewing machine (I love hand sewing little things and mending clothes but was considering getting into making clothes) and I'm so so glad that I did because it helped me decide that I want to keep dropping in for the weekly sessions they offer instead of jumping into getting a sewing machine for my home. It's also a more social option that makes me feel like I'm part of a 3rd space in my community :)

The house stuff is so real, my husband and I have always thrifted furniture//household goods/daily clothes and never buy it new. When we moved across the country we literally each had a box of essential/investment clothes + our outdoor hobby gear and didnt have a moving truck. When we set up our new place we slowly bought thrifted furniture/household goods/clothes that we love but always know in the back of our minds is completely dispensable (donate-able!) Also, the quality of the older items we thrifted were so much better than brand new things we could ever afford. Investing in furniture that costs $1000's + paying $100's-1000 for a moving truck just doesn't make sense when you don't own a house (or ever, for me!)

Love your essence. The items you listed had been in the back of my mind especially lately in today's economy haha.. Monthly hair appointments are just not realistic and having a collection of items today feels pointless and then the alcohol... I've never been a fan but me and my hubby stopped one weekend and now 100 dollars aren't going down the drain for the heck of it and we realize we don't even need it to have a good time. Your video was the confirmation I needed but truly could wholeheartedly agree with each and every one. However, as much as I try to be frugal and mindful with what I buy, I also couldn't help but jump on the bandwagon of the Stanley lol. But just like you, I talked about it so much until my boyfriend got sick of it and got me one for Christmas... I swear it makes water taste better. Loved your video hun new subscriber here

On furniture and making every home your dream home: I bought my wonderful sofa when I was pregnant with my daughter who is now 5. It was on deep discount and I’d searched for months to find one made in the US out of wood, and making sure it was something that could be reupholstered. My mom bought her sofa when I was 12, and had it recovered when I was about 30. Now I’m 34 and it’s still going strong! That’s my plan for mine! Having said that, I did keep a blanket on it since it’s cream colored and my kids sometimes eat on it. I usually don’t let them eat anything messy on it though, so it’s not been bad! I think pieces are worth investing in, especially if you truly have the money now and can hang on to them to re-do when your kids are older. I’m sure you’ll be able to keep the kids from literally scribbling on them, tho 🤣🤪 But also 42 year old you probably isn’t going to have the exact taste you do at 24 😁

But I was older than you when I bought my sofa, and has been married a few years! And we were still renting. I always thought we’d own before we had children which was not the case 🤣 And at the same time as I had my dream sofa, my husband had a recliner that was literally off the curb and ripped down the back. The movers asked if we wanted it put in the trash instead of the house when we DID buy one lol.

Thank you for this video. One of my goals this year is to get into financial stability by cutting out unecessary spending. I do like your gift goal, my family started doing something similar last year and this year, and not only did everyone get what they wanted, there was no stress! We just keep an updated Amazon wish list and when it comes near holidays or birthdays, we just buy one thing from the list. On personal care, I do agree with doing nails and eyebrows and shaving yourself, but for me hair appointment are non-negotiable. I attempted to color my own hair for a time, and it ended up costing more money to have a hair stylist fix it. What I did change was my color- I went from getting blonde balayage to red all-over color. Saved me at LEAST $100, and I was able to get salon-quality shampoo and conditioner for upkeep. And the “investment pieces!” It’s okay not to have a curated home right away. And it ends up looking more natural and cozy (in my opinion) when investment pieces are added over time.

Amazon wish list is GENIUS - so so smart!! I totally get the hair thing - I'm very grateful that I was able to find a way to do it, but I also know how tricky it is so super fair.

I'm 51 and hated having "the right things or dream things" because it really wasn't me anyway...it was masked me. I've never felt attatchment to items and I'm so glad I don't. 😊 It was so cathartic to get rid of those things as I sold my home and downsized into mid life!

I have two daughters that love to draw (all over everything) Luckily for them, I was an Art Major in college and know how to remove just about every stain and paint from just about everything. Hard surfaces (that typically get written on) are easily cleaned by common rubbing alcohol (who could have guessed that’s was what it was for? 😂) because most common ink pens are either water or alcohol based, easily erased by alcohol.

So much of what you say resonates with me! I have been married for 11 years, and we still have some hand me down items! Our kids are 6 and 4, and the scribbles and messes are non stop hahaha but I think what you are saying is that overall we all feel entitled to what we see our parents with, without recognizing the work and effort and time it took for our parents to own those things and to create that environment. I think that we have taken specialty things and turned them into everyday items, like that special trip to a coffee shop or to get fast food or a manicure, we make it an everyday necessity which has taken away the specialness of that moment or trip or experience. I hope what I have said makes sense, and honestly I am not judging anyone for doing it, I am judging myself and trying to change those habits so that it becomes a special thing for me once again.

YES exactly!! It's not that having nice things is in any way a bad thing or goal, but it's also okay if it's something we work for & towards, and honestly makes it so much more meaningful! Thank you for your comment, you said this so well!

Great video and reminders! It is a physical gift but I bought Aesop soap this year for friends when they were welcoming us to their home. It’s more than they would probably spend on soap for themselves but it feels super luxurious and it’s useful. Would love other ideas though!

You know what helps me stay away from buying mugs (and any other thing)? Living in a small apartment. The bigger a room is, the more stuff we tend to accumulate in it. And if the house is big, you are gonna have a lotta crap there that you are gonna forget about. I notice when I go back home. There were 6 of us living in that house, now there is only my mother and brother left and it is just way too much space. "I'll leave it there for now" turns into years and years of rubbish put away somewhere and then my mom wonders why she is so overwhelmed all the time.

I always laugh when people say they have "invested" in things. It is just a way to make you feel better about spending money. I guarantee none of the 10 things you are "investing" in in 2024 will appreciate in value or earn you a profit.

New to this channel, and I’m glad I came across it - great list and will definitely subscribe and watch more! Inspired me to make my own too, as I agree with alcohol, mugs, fast food, and mid-range items. One thing for me, is buying new tech items or gadgets. I’ve been finding refurbished, second hand, or eBay items for just as good. Some good non physical gifts could be interesting subscription services like MasterClass, gifted stocks from Stockpile, or bonds from Worthy.

hi- great decisions-as someone a tad older than you, permit me to just add, dont go over board on any 'investment ' pieces until you have had children or decided you really dont want them-even the best behaved kids and 'antiques' or 'investment' pieces dont really go together unless money isnt an issue :)

While it’s very good to reflect and check the things we are overbuying, since in everyday life we don’t even notice them, at the same time we need to make sure we don’t fall in the trap of being consistently trying not to buy those stuff. I ackowledged this in myself. For example, instead of putting my energy in looking for new stuff and buying new stuff, I was putting my energy at controlling the things I was not getting. The solution I found is just to redirect my energy somewhere else. If I start new hobbies and/or start enjoying more my simple daily reality, I won’t even think of these things. I will be fulfilled much easier. And still saving money at the same time 😊
