10 Things I Love About MALAYSIA 🇲🇾 (as an Aussie expat)

I'm an Aussie expat living in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for 2 years. In this video, I tell you why it's one of the best decisions I've made in my life.
I've explored Malaysia (& South East Asia) and have much to say about what I LOVE. Here are the top 10 things I love about Malaysia as a country and a place to live (including Malaysian culture, lifestyle, people, and of course, Malaysian food!)
If you're a foreigner, this video will help you decide if visiting or moving to Malaysia is right for you.
If you're local, this video will help you understand an expat's perspective of your beautiful country.
Check it out:
0:36 - WEATHER
1:44 - COST OF LIVING
2:36 - RENTAL MARKET
4:09 - SUPER APPS
4:44 - TRANSPORT
5:41 - 'WOKE' CULTURE
6:43 - MALAYSIAN CULTURE
7:18 - DIVERSITY

2:35 Yes, true. But being from one of the Malaysian Bornean State, we now can get nice commercial rice wine. Sarawak even has our own beer - 1602 craft beer. I'm no drinker myself but once in a while, I would like a sip or two too. This is probably not known to you because expats don't visit the other side of Malaysia except for the beaches and diving in Sabah, so their impression of Malaysia is peninsula-centric.

One thing foreign youtubers always fail to mention or more likely take for granted of is how english is widely used in Malaysia especially compared to countries like Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam or even east asian countries like Japan, S. Korea, China etc. Pretty much everything important is written in english (signboards, apps, instructions, restaurant menus etc plus there are even multiple english speaking radio stations too). U can also go to hospitals, police stations, government agencies etc and use english there without much issues. Hey, I'm a local, and my english is ok right? 😅

Amazing review. We wanna “Thank You” as a Malaysian. We honor positive vibes that You carry as of changes the atmosphere on social media, spreading the good news on Your platform. I live in KL past 28 years.I am native indigenous from the East of Peninsula of Malaysia so called “Borneo LIMBANG Sarawak” very closed to Brunei. I am in love with KL CITY .Amaze with the skyscrapers.Shopping Mall just amazing. I’ve visited Langkawi Island,Pangkor Island,Tioman Island,Cameron Highland,Genting Highland,Perhentian Island, visited Singapore,Thailand and Bali. Those were the days We touring around town to Ipoh. From Petaling Jaya to Kelantan longer hours driving 20 hours! back and forth to Langkawi and Penang Island,Taman Negara Pahang. We love travel and camping. Malaysia fantastic place to live, dream that I would never taught. I’ve met lovely,so friendly people here in KL,make lots of friends. There are also negative side and I choose to speak about the positive. Take a walk and a leisure time in the afternoon, cuppa of tea at Mamak Shop,The Masala Tea amazing. Feasting up to supper. I enjoyed the bus ride around KL City so much included out of town. Frequent travel with AirAsia for many years. “THANK YOU” for choosing MALAYSIA to live, explore the inner side, the beauty of mix cultures between so many races living in harmony. I served in privates health care services far too long, love seeing all kind of people.KL has the best public transportation. Glad You choose MALAYSIA 🇲🇾 as Your home. #TRULY ASIA ❤ 🇲🇾

Malaysia only has 2 weather (no winter by the way, and never snow) which are sunny all year round with occasional rain. There is a rain season which you may want to avoid. It could rain several times in a day (20-30 minutes long) or in some areas it may rain non stop for several days instead . Unless you do like to walk in the rain.

You are absolutely right. I plan to make another video just about healthcare. It is WAY better than Australia. I was able to see a specialist, get an MRI scan and see the specialist again a few hours later, for free. In Australia this would take weeks (or even months) and cost a lot of money.

Fun fact: Singapore might be the most expensive country in the world for the last 9yrs and is about 4 times more expensive than Malaysia (esp in rental market & car ownerships),but u forgot the salary part!!!🥰😁🤭Singapore has the HIGHEST avg salary in asia & is in world top 3 highest, slightly higher than ur Australia❤. Singapore avg salary is about 6X higher than Malaysia & Singapore has one of strongest currencies in asia. So in that sense, U actually get more value & saving in ur $$, much more than Malaysia. Also even when everything so expensive in Singapore, Singapore still has cheap food options cos we have thousands of street food/hawker centres & food courts. If u are observant, u’ll notice the pricing not much diff from Malaysia. Singapore offers similar food like Malaysia since we had share similar history before❤❤U earn higher salary in Singapore & u get to save more $$ too. That explains why there are over 1 million Malaysians been working in Singapore. U should try visit the border one day & see for urself how thousands of Malaysians cross border daily to work in Singapore🥰🥰Those are the ones usually still have home in JB Malaysia & work in Singapore.🤭 Singapore also has world class infrastructure(ranked as world no.1) & best MRT subway system that started in the 80s, the 1st one in Southeast Asia.❤The buses are linked to the MRT system & super efficient that come in so frequently every few mins. U can check out all the buses arrival time through the app too.❤❤❤

Great comment! Yes, I have been to Singapore many times and I do love it. The infrastructure is definitely the best & I'd live there if it was possible. Unfortunately in my situation it's difficult to get a job there that pays significantly more than what I can get in Malaysia at the moment. I highly recommend SG to anyone who can afford it, or is able to get a fantastic job there. Thanks for the insights!

Nice video Mate... I am not sure but did you mention the #1 ease about Malaysia is the fact of the English language spoken and used widely. 😊 It helps tremendously with assimilation compared to countries like Thailand, Indonesia, etc in South East Asia. Especially for bureaucracy issues as well as hospital visits. The ability to express yourself on a daily level whatever your activities are makes living in another country much easier when ones Mother tongue language is also spoken. 😁

Haha appreciate that. I'll give it some thought but I'll tell you one negative now - people get very defensive. It's hard to constructively criticise anything without getting in a fight. Though this is the same in most countries now.. including Australia, so it's not unique to Malaysia!

Paid AU$1000 (RM3000) per month for a Unilodge room in Canberra for 3 years. I can rent two decent condos in KL with AU$1000 ( using my brothers rental condo at RM1400/mo partly furnished).

Absolutely on points🎉 People really need to travel around to gauge the reality comparisons. Still, it depends on individual luck and fate. Many might not have such capacity to work it out. But for those who can, why not travel more and choose while they have choices in hand. When, a person is financially free and capable basically most countries around the world are good(i mean those good countries - most Europe and some Asian countries) to live but they lack of cultural diversity and tolerance like Malaysia and Singapore. Then, why Malaysia? Simply put - abundance of fresh products where you need not to worry about like people in other parts of the world. Able to live a bit lavishly and quality life but at a very discounted price. Boring? Just take a week or month to get wild in Thailand or Japan or Indonesia or elsewhere ... And back to Malaysia for a good relax and recharge ❤ - a dude from Melaka

it's easy to calculate the difference in living profit in malaysia through the difference of your currency with the malaysia profit as much, if UK in malaysia the difference is 6x times. if usa is different 4x. if Australia is 3x different. UK citizens are very fortunate to live in Malaysia with 6x more profit than living in the UK by enjoying better facilities than the UK and Malaysia is more modern than the UK

Jack.. thanks for ur positive comments... Any country in the world will have it's up's and down.. I believe since ur working in center of KL... Due to convenience, time and travel factor u put up at ... KL... There are so many low rise accomodations.. around greater kl which provides.. scerene environment.. that most expat dont know... When they hit Malaysia it's bout city center... Give me million i wont choose anywhere around that damn twin towers😄... I rather choose places like country heights in Kajang... Do check out bro... Life needs to be less hectic

What advice do you have for westerners, I'm from the USA, lookng for work in Malaysia? So far I haven't had much luck so any useful insights could be really hepful.

  • @JackAlderton

    @JackAlderton

    3 ай бұрын

I'll try to help. I didn't actively seek work in Malaysia, it found me. Having said that, it's pretty obvious to me that Western education and even being a native english speaker is highly praised. I would try to find a writing job or something related to english language, you should be a shoe-in if you're from the USA. The hard part will be the wages, you might have to accept a fair bit less money unless your skillset is similar to the above.

In recent years, expatriates coming to Malaysia must be very satisfied, as the depreciation of the Malaysian Ringgit makes it very affordable for them. However, for us Malaysians, traveling abroad is becoming increasingly difficult.

Thank you, appreciate you watching. I work for a finance company as a writer / content producer. Design I am not an expert in but I would suggest trying Jobstreet (like Seek in Aus) and probably LinkedIn will be your best bet. You could also research some larger design companies in Malaysia and reach out to them directly with your portfolio. There is a HUGE market for home improvement here, especially since pretty much every condo comes furnished. Check out 'the makeover guys' would be perfect for you!
