"A good chef must always follow his gut. Maggot what does your gut say?" Maggot: "My gut, huh?" *Maggot lifts up shirt* "CAKE!"

I actually liked Maggott & thought he had a cool design. His powers were never really ever explained that well in comics, so the confusion might've thrown ppl off. Even writers wrote his powers inconsistently. At 1st it seemed like he could just cause Eany & Meany to come out & eat anything. Later on they started drawing him w/ blue skin, but never really explained it was a strength & durability boost from his "pets" feeding. Then his psychometric powers involved him touching the ground to "replay" events that recently transpired, via "psychic residue". I'm just discovering thru this vid that it's his "pets" which "play back the past" of whatever they ate. That makes much better sense. He was an interesting character, too bad he got killed, off panel (hopefully he returns in the MCU). I think he was kinda "replaced" by "Gentle".

Good info. It seems no one took the initiative to develop Maggot into a better character. Personally, I think he would've looked much better without the blue skin. It's too cliche in the MCU. I just read that "Nezhno was originally planned to be killed off by writers Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle, but they were not allowed to."

He wasn't in a lot of comics and, when he was, you could tell that they didn't really know what to do with him.

What was the deal with the hate on Maggot? Was it just for how, well, impractical his powers seemed? Or something else? He never really caught my attention back in the day. If I remember correctly, Maggot debuted around the same time that Marrow joined the X-men. Between the two, I definitely followed Marrow more closely. I've been a pretty big fan of hers since.

I think we all have a fondness for a couple of characters that everyone seems to hate. I feel that way about Silk tbh. I know a lot of her haters consider her a shameless Mary Sue and an example of SJW pandering...despite both of these statements being wrong on so many levels... I honestly don't know anything about Maggot other than the stuff you mentioned in this video. Didn't even know he was South African. But his powers definitely aren't as useless as haters claim if his maggots can eat almost anything to afford him strength comparable to Spider-Man's. That ain't bad at all. I'll have to familiarize myself with the character. I'm always down to support more underrated POC characters.

Professor Bill, I love you and what you do, so speaking as a Maggot fan, why him? I know he's interesting but is he making a comeback? You got some good news about him?

I saw that some people were messaging Gail Simone about wanting her to write a Maggott story and I thought, "Whatever happened to Maggott?" When I read that many stories about a single character it only makes sense to explain him. Plus, he's a great character that not a lot of people know. Why would I explain Superman? That's why I enjoy explaining the fringe characters, like our boy, Maggott.

Always been one of the oddly most influential powers. . . Think about his power seriously. Eeny and meeny, they xan ingest ANYTHING and transfer that to 'maggott' (btw i dont accept that name due to my statements from this point forward). - eating mjolnir. Nothing says thats not a potential prospect - eating ironmans nanotech. . . I mean, cmon - eating the gamma radiation spewn forth by the hulk? Not enough backstory to say they couldnt. Point is, this dude has as much potential as absorbtionman, even if its like 1000% cooler. Was legit his introduction and battlechasers that got me into comics, so admittedly im biased

Its like the tyrannids of wh40k. . . Sure it was cthulu-lovecraftian in origin, but it became its own immaculate theme of fiction. Same with maggott. . . Theres so much POTENTIAL with this dude. . . Eeny and meeny could literally be a new version of marvel zombies just from 'incorporation' alone

I'm pretty sure I have his first appearance, and I know I have the issue that details his origins. I really like him, and he had a lot of potential. But I have to say, in terms of powers he really drew the short stick.

Comic Book University That would have been cool. And it certainly have taken Cain aback. But I guess we'll just have to settle for one of them eating a bomb and completely containing a blast without getting a scratch. But I wonder, did Maggot get indigestion when the slugs returned to his torso?

  • @ComicBookUniversity

No, that's what's cool. The slugs take everything and only deliver nutrients to Japeth. I mean, they have to burrow through his belly to deliver that food, but no indigestion.
