Afghanistan followed the Zoroastrian religion from 1600BC. The Zoroastrian religion was the first monotheistic religion and became the state religion of ancient Persia. The Zoroastrian religion influenced later modern religions like Christianity and Islam. Fire is an important symbol within the religion, very much as the cross is a symbol in the Christian religion. The Zoroastrian religion is definitely not about 'fire worship'. The prophet Zoroaster was said to have been born in Balkh. The two most holy days in the Zoroastrian religion are Yalda and Navroze. Navroze is the Persian New Year and the first day of Spring and is a very important Zoroastrian holy day celebrated by Zoroastrians and people of Persian descent worldwide. Today Navroze is celebrated in Afghanistan, Iran and Central Asia. In the 7th century AD the Persian empire was conquered by the invading Arabs and the population was forced to convert to Islam. However, the population still managed to cling on to their Zoroastrian past by celebrating certain celebratory days, like Navroze, within an Islamic context. Although Afghanistan is one of the most dangerous politically unstable countries today, during its time in the Zoroastrian Persian empire, it was a world leading centre of art, cultural, literary and scientific advance. Ironically, it was during this time that according to the Zoroastrian religion, men and women were equal and the concept of a declaration of Human Rights was introduced by Cyrus The Great.
