    No Roland. We wonder why people put old aero engines into cars! Then many of us wonder how we can get one and do the same... As for wondering why Americans put unnecessarily large engines in their cars, we don't do that. What we DO do is look at the capacity and then the power output and laugh our tits off when compared to what OUR engines produce half the size of yours!

    It's really incredible and unbelieveable what speeds they reached already 100 years ago. Just imagine doing 180km/h in that naked Dirraq V8 or over 400 in that 6 wheeler Benz T80 in 1938😱

  • @VisioRacer

    CORRECTION: The Mercedes in the video isn't the T80, unfortunately, it is other land speed record breaking Mercedes with a completely different engine. Really sorry about this situation. Besides that, the Napier-Bentley wins for me. How about you?

    the T80 never run due to WWII. Ironically Hitler wanted to show up who is the best mechanic/engineer, by creating this vehicle with the intention to run in the area of 700km/h. Hitler suicided, but this masterpiece of 0,18 Cd survived.

  • @andyharman3022

    @andyharman3022

    Yeah, I was going to say something about that. The sound going along with the footage of the T80 definitely didn't sound like a 2000 rpm aircraft engine. It sounded more like a Mercedes Grand Prix auto racing engine from the same era. The speed record cars were basically their racing cars with more aerodynamic bodies. But they did run on exotic mixtures of nitrobenzene and alcohol.

    Okay so it's not the T80, but at 7:59 at the bottom of the screen there is some kind of streamlined speed record car with some kind of giant forced induction aero engine running on a science fiction formula of synthetic liquids, generating thousands of horsepower and capable of running at hundreds of miles per hour. And at the top of the screen, there is a cart being pulled by a horse. The '30s must have been incredibly weird.

  • @argh1989

    @argh1989

    7 жыл бұрын

    The Bf 109 used DB 601 and later DB 605 engines, they weren't as big or powerful as the 603. 400 mph is about right for a late 109, but that's at something like 20,000 ft altitude, where the air drag is of course much lower. I doubt they reached more than 320 mph at sea level.

    Yes, it was still just called Gran Prix then. Yes, the "mighty" Brits held most land speed records then. Yes, that engine normally used in a Messerschmitt was build by Daimler-Benz. Yes, that car isn't the T80. The video poster already left a comment correcting that. It doesn't change the fact that racing was very popular in pre-war Nazi Germany and that Mercedes and Auto-Union basically had government backing. You're quite the multi-tasker. You can split hairs and be an asshole at the same time. I'll give you my cookie.

    Yeah, aero engines usually have something around 7:1 even naturally aspirated. Don't ask me why, that's something I've been searching about for a long time, maybe ram air effect, dunno. If someone with knowledge about aero engines could enlighten us that would be awesome.

    probably because in an areo engine, you must keep parameters far form conditions that can cause preignition and damage to the engine as these engines are used in a variety of conditions and some of these are favorable to preignition as dry warm air, the quality of fuel, the degree of carbon accumulation in the combustion chambers, overheat, etc... usually they use a turbocharger to compensate the low compression ratio, this way, is is feasible to adjust running parameters to cease detonnation in flight if this occurs and safely bring the aircraft to destination in aviation, the safety is the prime factor of any design

    because the aero engines usually had a supercharger, and as a super charger is set at a constant boost the engines needed lower conp to not detonate, some had higher comp ratio and would get further on the same amount of fuel but they had to go with less boost from the supercharger which would result in an overall power loss, witch in the WWII era may be the difference between life or death.

    Testo d hegenplo They don't rev aircraft engines too high. That thing probably was done at 2000rpms. Most of the standard "normal" aircraft engines don't go much over 25-2800, 3000 is outta sight! Once you turn a propeller faster than the speed of sound, it stops working.

  • @Stale_Mahoney

    @Stale_Mahoney

    7 жыл бұрын

    MrTheHillfolk say WHAT? you now they run low rpm's because the engines are set up to produce max power at low working rpm and need to be reliable. A high revving engine is not likely to stay reliable as a aero engine use about 75% of the engines max output when they are cruising, something a car engine never needs to as you use far less energy to keep a car moving imagine sitting at 4k rpm in your car with the gas pedal mashed to the floor while going down the highway, every day hours upon hours. Besides the theory you got about propellers going faster than the speed of sound makes them stop working is beyond stupid as strong engine can drive a bigger propeller to provide more speed, and a smaller engine would use a smaller prop, and the angling on the prop is also a factor. think about it, a turbo has the same job as a propeller, to move air, if a prop stops working at higher rpm's how come a turbo work at 100 000rpm?

    I can't say much about the displacements but judging by what I see with most of them I'd say the power numbers are grossly overstated. The Mercedes T80 0-60 of 1.32 seconds? dream on, no way.

    The Darracq is water cooled as well. The V on the front is the radiator, and the brass torpedo atop the engine is the coolant header tank. Unfortunately the owner, Mark Walker, had an engine problem at Mallory Park a few years ago. I believe he is in progress of repairing the block etc. I also have a few videos of the Darracq, Napier Bentley and the Beast of Turin on my channel. Just short clips from different events.

    I believe that the Handlye was built by the guy who bought a motorcycle from me many years back, at that point the car was close to being finished. As I recall he said the engine came from a Hawker Hurricane, which was another of many many aircraft that utilized the Merllin. He said he got hold of 2 engines and using the best pieces from both built the engine that's in the car. I can't remember the timescale but it was in the order of 10 years or longer in the making.
