Great video, I have been photographing bubbles with all my students since the summer and now I can't wait to photograph bubbles in the winter. @Christine Turner, as a Vancouver resident myself I've found winter temperatures in the Lower Mainland aren't quite cold enough. I've tried to freeze bumble on numerous occasions near -5°C, without any success. I've also found that the relative humidity can impact how successful freezing bubbles are: with less humidity being more desirable 👍👍👍

That’s beautiful and well explained and demonstrated. My biggest problem is I HATE cold weather. Nevertheless, I find this quite compelling. In ten more months, northern Illinois should have suitable conditions.
I've photographed frozen bubbles in only -2 degrees celsius. And here in Denmark you can actually get bubble solution in the shops year round 🤣. Try backlighting with colored christmas lights, and fully open aperture. Depending on the lens you get the most beautiful bubbly bokeh. Pun intended!
Well done.... :)

@Prontip Larson this is super helpful and something I wish I'd known - thanks for sharing 👍👍👍
Try cross polarization. I have a linear (or circular) polarizer on my lens and a linear polarizer beyond my subject. Polarize the light illuminating the bubbles. I purchased a whole 50" by 19" (127×48 cm) sheet of polarizing film decades ago that I use pieces of for my ice crystal photography.
Wow I didn't even know this existed. Sadly we don't have snow in this parts. Btw those Frost formations look dope. Great video. Also did u get the D850 or what? Are U gonna upload frequently?
@neilfisher
6 жыл бұрын
+Zaber Ansary I suppose freezing anything would be a challenge in your neck of the world. 😛 I don't really have the need to move to a Nikon D850 - the Canon 5D mark IV does everything I need it to. Additionally, I'm too heavily invested in the EF lens system to make migrating systems even slightly financially viable.
LOve IT!!!!!!!!!!

I don't know if it would work, but a small hole drilled in the surface with a tiny colored LED light, might make a pretty cool light source. Will post if I ever try it.

Hmmm... interesting idea @Joe Hurly 👍 You'd probably want to cover the hole while the bubble is freezing, so that it remains "air-tight".

Thanks +sandani shaik ... it's just some free KZread music - nothing to extravagant. 😀
great tutorial - any idea how much wind is too much for most bubbles to work - what wind level on your gadget have you found to be the limit generally speaking ?
Thank you so much for this awesome video. You are ridiculously likeable and easy to watch. Your bubbles are gorgeous (and I didn't even mind the background music - which is unusual for me). Your explanations were very, very good! Super video! I have one question: if you literally BLOW the bubble, doesn't the warm breath heat it up too much? In the video, it so often looks as if you're merely touching the end of the straw to/near the surface, then pulling away (but I can't imagine how that works, either). I never seem to get weather cold enough to try the bubble blowing, but I'm still hopeful 🙂 Thanks again!
@neilfisher
2 жыл бұрын
Many thanks @Shutterbeetle 👍 Appreciate the feedback😃😃😃 Yes, I regret not including more in depth detail in to how the bubbles are actually created. You're correct in that the end of the straw doesn't need to make contact with the intended surface - you can even have a bubble freeze on the end of a straw... provided there's zero wind and you have a steady hand.
A wonderful instruction video! Thank you! Do you think using glow-stick liquid would work in the bubble mixture?
@neilfisher
4 жыл бұрын
Many thanks @Oli Munnery 👍 The glow-stick liquid is a brilliant idea - though you'll have to experiment with it and mixing soap to maintain the bubbles. Let me know if it works.

@Poczciwy miłek, without glycerin the bubbles are more likely to pop if disturbed by the wind 👍
Can this also bee done by pouring soap water over a crystal sphere or lens glass?
@neilfisher
5 жыл бұрын
@J. E. to my knowledge the only way to have the bubbles freeze before they pop, is by exposing them an ambient air temperature well below freezing. Hope this helps. 👍
Why do you use glycerin?
@neilfisher
5 ай бұрын
Good question @andreabalzarini6615, it helps thicken the bubble solution - making it a bit stronger and resilient against wind 🌬️ 🍃

Ok I’ve had my bubble out in -7C for over 10 minutes Why isn’t it freezing? Would it be the solution
@neilfisher
3 жыл бұрын
@Oksana Posan it could be that -7°C isn't quite cold enough. I've tried to freeze bumble on numerous occasions near -5°C, without any success. I've also found that the relative humidity can impact how successful freezing bubbles are: with less humidity being more desirable 👍

@neilfisher
5 жыл бұрын
@sushil shinde I suppose it's possible to reproduce the necessary environment in a controlled setting, but it would require some rather extensive resources. The air temperature is the most important aspect of bubbles freezing - and the colder the better. Good luck. 👍
