10 Sophie Scarf Alternatives | Aussie Knitting Podcast Ep. 4

Hi, I’m Nadine (she/her) of ‪@YourKnittingBestie‬ In this video, I chat about 10 alternatives to the Sophie Scarf, for those who are still loving the mini scarf trend but craving something a little bit new and different.
I have been OBSESSED with the Sophie Scarf recently, even though I can never seem to style it to my satisfaction. I somehow remain optimistic that I'll figure out how to wear them (and must therefore have one in every colour). I think it's a great process knit, an amazing gift knit, and so handy to work through your scraps.
Here's a link to my Ravelry bundle for these scarves, which I'll keep updated as I see more! I have actually already found a new one since I filmed this video.

I have also made several Sophie scarfs and also the Italian Summer Scarf which I enjoyed more because I didn’t have to worry about counting rows- using the eyelet row to measure.

I know what you mean about the Sophie scarf. I've just finished my third one in about two weeks. Someone recommended the Workday scarf. It is a free pattern on Ravelry and I think it is just really pretty. I plan to use an icord on the straight side. I plan to start it tonight.

Great vlog, well the Sophie scarf is a definite hit, not wishing to be all of my 50 years of knitting, but as they say, they all come around again, and indeed this is one of them. I literally have dozens of these little skinny scarves, I find them along with socks the ideal handbag project for those unexpected delays. Long before scarves were an accessory, they were a must wear for warmth, (UK), and a greta left over yarn to use up. I think it is wonderful that younger or new to knitting are re-making these small, perfect and highly achievable projects. Great information, thank you for taking time to share.

Thank you so much for leaving a comment for me, it's great to have your insight! You're so right - little scarves are perfect to shove in your handbag. It sounds like you have a marvellous collection of them. Sometimes I wish I was in a colder climate like you, so that I could pile on the knits! But I'm sure once the cold really settled in, I would be missing our hot weather. I'll have to stick with just wearing my knits in my air conditioned office at work ;) Thank you again for dropping by.

Greetings from Olympia, Washington. I watch a lot of knitting content while I knit. And I must say yours is wonderful. You get down to business quickly and I don’t find myself fast forwarding through endless, boring chatter to get to the knitting content. I’ve made 6 Sophie scarfs most for gifts. Thanks for these ideas on similar scarfs. I love wearing scarfs and am going to get a couple of these patterns for something different. Thanks for this….well done!

Thank you for your lovely comment - I was so excited to see that my video had reached someone in Washington (wow)! The Sophie scarf really is a terrific gift knit - I'm sure the recipients of your gifts were over the moon. I'm so glad you liked some of these patterns. The videos where I talk about my current projects might have a bit more chatting in them but I will always try to keep these 'topic' videos nice and concise. Have a great day!

Just found your channel :) You have such a gentle way about you. Please do not worry that you feel you are being to forward in your knitting thoughts personally I have actually refused to buy the Sofia scarf or shawl because I can tell it is something I can easily figure out myself if I ever wanted to. But I also struggle with petite knit patterns in general because I feel that she does take one basic shape or design, tweak 1 thing and then re-release it as a new pattern. I have many of her patterns and have knit a good number of her baby patterns but I have determined not to knit her patterns anymore due to the above as well as I struggle with her pattern writing style. The novel type of pattern writing just confuses me I need a sort of check of box system, simple directions line by line so I can glance at my pattern and run with it. I know I am in the minority and I am ok with that but it is hard to voice your opinion these days, even when you say it gently, without fear of backlash or cancel culture.

I had never heard of the sophie scarf but I really like the look. I've knit something similar though a Drops pattern called "notions of spring" which is knit in moss stitch with a picot edge, they have some more patterns for these small shawls (for free) just look for garnstudio by drops yarn. I added two tassels at the ends because I felt it was missing a little something 😁

I'm excited about trying out a few! I am also pleased that you added the Estuary pattern by Tin Can Knits to your Ravelry bundle. It is such a beautiful piece. I'm so glad to have found your channel! It is so hard to be a knitter in HOT climates and to be obsessed with things that are hard to style or just plain impractical where we live. I am in Texas and knitting a great sweater or cozy scarf here is ridiculous. Last summer my city had 80 days with 100F-degree heat, 40 days with temperatures of 105F degrees or higher. It's also very humid here and some days just walking out of the house is like stepping into a sauna. I see knitters in Canada, the UK, and northern states in the US making such lovely cozy sweaters and fluffy cardigans and know those won't work for me. I'm about to knit my first sweater and it's a Tee pattern I'll use sport weight cotton/linen blend to knit.

Thank you for the roundup on the Sophie Scarf alternatives, my favourites list on Ravelry has a few more patterns now. Love the Scarflette (I love lace designs as well as cable design) I haven't seen that one before. I can add a design, is a bit on the longer side, but can be modified to be smaller, is the Estuary by Tin Can Knits. I loved making that one. Thank you for another entertaining episode, looking forward to the next one

So glad that this video was "recommended by KZread" - thoroughly enjoyed it. Will go back and watch your other episodes. The Quintet Shawlette by Amber O'Brien has a similar shape, I used it (with one colour) because I fell in love with the neat edged that I saw on the project pages. Knit it twice ..... first time in garter stitch, 2nd time in garter stitch alternating with ribbing. Both were incredibly satisfying knits. I'll knit it again for sure. It was fun to see that quite a few of the patterns you mentioned were already in my favourites. My Little Lace Scarf by Lisa Hannes looks good as well, I purchased that one and got side tracked with Amber's pattern.

I visited this channel today for the first time because it was recommended in another knitting podcast and I'm so glad I did. Thank you for this awesome presentation, this was such a joy to watch and you have definitely inspired me to pick the Minou Scarf as my next project. It's so gorgeous! I will make a light fingering weight version of it though. Also, since you are from Australia and in a mild climate as you mentioned I guess that I perhaps could find some inspiration for lighter garments here every now and then. I live in Europe and everyone over here is knitting warm garments for a big chunk of the year and those make up the content of podcasts as well. But I'm constantly hot and two warm sweaters are all I ever need so I yearn for people who are more into light sweaters, tees, tops or slipovers. Anyway, you have a new , happy subscriber from Germany.

thanks for the recommendations! i must admit i've never made a sophie scarf because i think i would also find it hard to style, but as it's such a small project maybe i should just jump in and make one and try to style it once i actually have it rather than in my head. if it doesn't work out i can always gift it. my mum sometimes wears those square silk scarves tied around her neck so i think she might like one, so i'll pick a colour that we both like so she can wear it if i end up not liking it on myself.

Thanks for watching!! 🩷 It’s such a quick little project, I totally agree it might be worth just casting on. If you figure out the trick on how to style it please let me know 😂 I found that the slightly longer ones I made were a bit easier to style for some reason - maybe it gives you a bit more to work with when tying it up? Perhaps your mum can give us a masterclass on how she wears her silk scarves, for some inspo 😆

I live in Canberra and it definitely gets cold enough in winter to wear a Sophie Scarf. I’ve made two, and enjoyed the simplicity and speed of making them - plus I paired them with amazingly soft yarn, so it was a delight to knit. CadyJax Knits Podcast had some awesome suggestions on how to style them. I enjoy wearing one as a headband - it keeps my ears warm in the cold weather, but I don’t overheat like I would with a beanie.

Hi Nadine! I really enjoy your vlog. I have a well paying job (which, I assume, so does a lawyer in Brisbane... ;) ) so I often buy patterns from indie designers even if I don't make the project. I am stoked to help them. I think you should commit to more than ONE gift knit! Do the Minou *and* the other one you like. I haven't made a Sophie but, yeah, the internet is a little crazy with the Sophie. That makes me, Miss Mary Quite Contrary, want to do something OTHER than a Sophie, so this episode was really timely. I'm still not sure which one I'll do (though last week I was looking at the Grab & Go pattern and one other whose name I can't remember. I'm knitting Hermione socks as I "watched" your podcast, so I'll have to go back and study your 10 scarves more carefully. (I did see your textual disclaimer about not buying reverse-engineer-able patterns, and I can see that point, but still...) Are you familiar with the really amazing creator, Handmade By Caroline? She lives in Perth, so she's not particularly close to Brisbane (I'm impressed that I know that without looking at a map. lol), but she is a master creator. She sews and knits *all* of her clothing and even makes her shoes. Check her out! handmadebycarolyn.com.au/. I also really like Almost Knitting, who is a vlogger in Australia. She's a high school math teacher, and I can't remember where she is, exactly, but it might be Sydney.
