Indeed. Mandolin is one of the instrument the stereotypical Italian play, at least in the eyes of the foreigners. Germans usually say "Italians, pizza, spaghetti, mandolino" (the more sophisticated throw a guitar in it) and indeed the mandolin was invented in Italy, almost at the same time both in Naples and in Lombardy (the region where Milan is, home for example to the Stradivari violin makers - sorry if I sound nerdish and know-it-all).

Cool! You have good technique! Thee are also thousands of pieces of classical music. None are bluegrass. Lol! I love Bach, Vivaldi, Händel, etc. Baroque dounds great on mandolin. Beethoven wrote 4 or 6 pieces for mandolin for some gal he was in love with. Mozart also wrote some music for mandolin. There are a lot of superb turn of the 20th century Italian virtuoso mandolin pieces such as Munier's Capriccio Spagnuolo. And the list goes on. Anything written for violin is good for mandolin since mando is a plucked version of the violin I need to taste something besides classic as I've had a hankering for something more modern for just the last month so I really like your offering here. Very nice! Hahaha! Perfect coincidental timing for me. I have two mandos. One flatback and my favorite, my bowlback. Thanks for posting this!

One of the songs I used to teach myself mandolin, transferring my knowledge over from guitar: “Here Comes The Sun.” George Harrison actually used a capo way up on a guitar, to get it into a mandolin register. The song came and went Like the times that we spent Hiding out from the rain under the carnival tent I laughed and she'd smile It would last for awhile You don't know what you got till you lose it all again Listen to the mandolin rain Listen to the music on the lake Listen to my heart break every time she runs away Listen to the banjo wind A sad song drifting low Listen to the tears roll Down my face as she turns to go A cool evening dance Listening to the bluegrass band takes the chill From the air 'til they play the last song I'll do my time Keeping you off my mind but there's moments That I find, I'm not feeling so strong Listen to the mandolin rain Listen to the music on the lake Listen to my heart break every time she runs away Listen to the banjo wind A sad song drifting low Listen to the tears roll Down my face as she turns to go Running down by the lake shore She did love the sound of a summer storm It played on the lake like a mandolin Now it's washing her away again Listen to the mandolin rain Listen to the music on the lake Listen to my heart break every time she runs away Listen to the banjo wind A sad song drifting low Listen to the tears roll Down my face as she turns to go The boat's steaming in I watch the side wheel spin and I Think about her when I hear that whistle blow I can't change my mind I knew all the time that she'd go But that's a choice I made long ago Listen to the mandolin rain Listen to the music on the lake Listen to my heart break every time she runs away Listen to the banjo wind A sad song drifting low Listen to the tears roll Down my face as she turns to go Source: LyricFind Songwriters: Bruce Hornsby / John Hornsby Mandolin Rain lyrics © Sony/ATV Music Publishing LLC, Warner Chappell Music, Inc, North Star Media Feedback Videos

Hi my name is Austin and I was just wondering what kind of Mandolin I should buy. I have never played before but seeing videos like this one are the reason why I am giving it a shot. What do you think a good price range is for an entry level mandolin and if you have any specific suggestions that would be cool

Austin Lieto Hi, Austin. Glad to hear you're looking into playing mandolin. I love it! I always recommend the Kentucky KM-150 as a place to start, and if you don't have a local Kentucky dealer, I recommend the bluegrass shack in Illinois. There are other good choices, too--good luck, and happy picking.

Tried to find these on your website and would love to get the TAB for your version of the REM song - which also isn't listed in "Get Started on the Mandolin!". I was ready to pull out the plastic!

Never would’ve thought of Linus and Lucy. Maybe a loop pedal to lay down the ostinato to keep it going, and then layer in the melody. Also enjoyed your rendition of “This Is My Father’s World,” one of my favorite overlooked hymns. Would love to hear a full rendition. Keep it up!

Nope, never learned Linus and Lucy on the mandolin.....till now. Thanks Andy! How's that K+K pickup working out live? What kind of preamp do you use with it?

The K and K is okay. I don't use a pickup unless there are drums on stage, and I don't play with drums anymore. I used to use a LR BAGGS DI (the old one), and was happy with that. I'll take a microphone any day, though!

I really appreciate your talent and the song examples you have played! It appears you are using Steel Wound strings and they sound very, very nice. Are they Gibson monels or? Thanks for sharing your great talent! Dan

Where are Thomastik mandolin strings found ?... I've never heard of them ...Are they made in another country ?...Out of the USA ?...LOL.....I guess that was a stupid question....EVERYTHING is made out of the USA anymore..... I've been using D'addario ....All the locals tell me they are best...but I've never tried anything else.. Your mandolin does really sound great ! ..Is that a Gibson mandolin ?
