Seriously, that hit me home. I didn't know my rights and wasn't really interested in studying my rights on how to deal if ever stopped by police because why should I, I am a law abiding citizen, until one day, two bastard cops decided to tackle me to the ground and hold me at gunpoint for one hour for no reason because I was getting my bus pass from my pocket but the thugs lied that I was reaching for a gun that I never had. I raised my hands up, and the pigs still tackled me to the ground claiming I had a gun in my bag and said that I attacked the officers with a gun even though I had nothing on me besides music and books. They held me at gunpoint for one hour, never checked my ID, nothing, and after they released me, they couldn't stop laughing. I am so pissed at myself that I didn't know my rights because I could have sued the pricks for millions. Now my rights are not useful because cops only assaulted me once in my life, was about 10 years ago. I would love this to happen to me again because now I am so ready and know exactly what to do, so my knowledge of rights such as, not to talk to cops, record them if possible, don't consent to illegal searches and remain silent, and always consult with a lawyer would be so useful. Stupid me didn't report them back then! I would love this to happen to me again!

Most excellent. Retired 44 years of public safety service. Bad cops make us good cops like us look bad. We good cops understand that the public safety is our job, but how we effect it is up to each officer. We realized that the public pays our salary and benefits. We are public servants. We must treat people as good as we can. Give benefit of the doubt to people. We must keep our emotions in check no matter what. We are the example to the public. In 1978 we knew this and were Adam 12 type cops. Not perfect but honest and truthful and owned our mistakes and offered apologies to anyone we offended or somehow did wrong by error. The public was quick to accept our apologies and understood we were people just like then. We gave respect 🙏 and we got it 98% of the time. The other 2% were normally thugs but we still gave respect and all ended good. God-bless you and your families 😊 Chief Jones

Love the "Report Misconduct". Unfortunately, I've run into a situation where I was LITERALLY turned away from 3 precincts when trying to file a report. I was held in my car for 1 hour 42 minutes with 6 squad cars surrounding me. I didn't get a ticket and I explained why I was parked where I was (legally, keys out of my ignition). I was writing a sympathy card to my best friend who owned the home and had just lost her father. Apparently, a neighbor didn't recognize my car and called 9-1-1. I was polite. Had no weapons. Handed over my DL even though I didn't have to b/c I was not driving. I'm also a grandmother who is white but drive what I was told is a gangster car(?). I doubt many gangsters are driving around in school bus yellow coupes, but whatever. They wanted to search my car. I asked why. "We just do." I said no. I think the young female officer who arrived first called for backup for some reason. After all the other officers came with lights flashing, it seemed she started looking for any thing to "get me on". I asked several times if I could leave my car and go into my friends house. Nope. I was told I was NOT detained BUT their police cars literally had me pinned in and they wouldn't move for 1 hour and 42 mins. One officer stayed leaning on my door to keep me from opening it and getting out. I had bare the brunt of a young officer being over zealous I went to the appropriate precinct to file a complaint and got the rum around and sent to two other locations. At the third place, I was sent back to the first precinct. If this is how they treat an old grandmother they find fully and legally parked writing in a sympathy card, I can't imagine how they treat young minorities. This little yellow convertible was my mid-life crisis car, I suppose. After the above happened, I got pulled over once every 3-4 months -- never cited. Three years ago, I got a vanity plate that is "LAWRUP" and haven't had a single stop since.

Other rules include: Nothing is "Off the Record," Police lie all the time and claim stuff is off the record when it's not, Police can legally lie to you saying they have a warrant or probable cause when they don't, and yes, the police are specifically looking for trouble (makes it easier to give you an arrest or citation). Don't give it to them. Also, the "good cop/bad cop" dichotomy is a tactic itself. One cop will specifically act warm and friendly to gain your trust and cooperation as well as to distract you, while the other will be up to something and/or waiting for their moment to intimidate or arrest you. Cops never betray each other, and sometimes 1 cop alone will take on both roles to throw you off. Remember this is a game to them, and especially in poor areas, cops sometimes challenge each other on who can write the most citations, make the most arrests, or pull the most people over.

I was in a really bad relationship for years and one night he became very abusive and a neighbor heard the struggle and called the police which I was actually thankful for UNTIL..... They knocked on the door and asked to come in... I said sure.... Once inside he asked if he could look around a little... I didn't realize I could say no and wasn't really worried about it.... 20 minutes later there are three cops tearing apart my entire house... And threatening several times to '' bring in the k9 crew'' I was like... Bring it on.. I was angry... No dogs showed up but after about 45 minutes they came across a bud of weed about the size of my thumbnail in a drawer.... I was handcuffed and taken to jail and my boyfriend was set free because it was My house and even though the weed was his... It was on my property.... So I got beat up by my x.. Then raided by the police whom I thought were there to protect me.... Then arrested handcuffed and booked... I fought it and tge charge was reduced to disturbing the peace.... So fucked up.. I've never again in 8 years... See cops as protecting and serving... Lost total faith... Id like to mention I had no prior record besides a dui from ten years before when I was just 21...my boyfriend had a long rap sheet...

If you're in a vehicle, a rearview mirror cam and dash cam are enough to record you. Also, you're allowed to whip out your phone and record a police encounter while an officer is on duty. If you're in a state that has private citizen consent laws, then you'll need to announce to bystanders that you're recording an incident, so that legally you're protected from being accused of filming people without their awareness. Otherwise, an officer is not legally allowed to stop you recording or to take your phone from you. They might try to claim obstruction of justice, but you're well within your rights to keep recording and to let the officer know that if in fact you are obstructing, the video will act as evidence of that fact. The officer knows full well that a judge will throw out the "obstruction" excuse, bc it doesn't hold water. Stand your ground, but do not resist if things do escalate, as your safety is an absolute priority. Make sure you have an app that stores deleted videos or photos in a secret backup folder, in case an officer tries to confiscate your phone and erase any evidence within it. An automatic backup to a cloud is also another option, but just be sure to consider having an app as backup, bc clouds can fail to upload or may not be able to save any data if memory is full.

16 was my first poor interaction with an officer. Traffic stop. Pulled me out of my vehicle, put me in the back of his car, and threatened me. Gave me a warning on paper as well. When I went to complain they apologized, and said it happened before. They made it sound like he wouldn’t be working any longer. I am not sure if anything was done. I didn’t really have parents, but I’m glad I was strong enough to at least go in. There was another time Christmas Day. I was pulled over for running a stop sign 🙄I did not. He then asked me at 7a with my daughter in the passenger seat if I had been drinking. That’s when I got upset. Here I was a broke ass single mom, in my beater, after my 10th 12hr third shift in a row. Didn’t get a warning or a badge number that day. None of us are safe, but I’m very grateful for the good officers.

So I noticed a few things here that weren’t mentioned. When the guy gets pulled over (in the “good” example: 1. Doesn’t keep his hands in sight and on the steering wheel. 2. Makes sudden movements when reaching for his ID/Licence. 3. Reaches behind his back to pull his shirt up when he steps out the car door. 4. Stands with his hands behind his back while speaking to the police officer. I’ve seen enough cop videos to know people have been shot by twitchy cops for much less than that. ALWAYS keep your hands in view and make slow, calm movements.

Cops, real cops, actually do act in real life, and yes there acting may be as bad as a sales rep in a clothing store who says hi to you like they've known you all their life. Too many people fall for the Good Cop friendly banter. If there weren't schmucks in the world the cops would different tactics. People who are friendly are people I never trust. You don't have to be friendly with a real friend, and you don't have to say thank you when they let you borrow their car. Friends don't need to use these verbal contrivences. Too friendly = what do you want from me. They go after the low hanging fruit. Most Bankers on Wall Street get off with a bribe, I mean a fine. How long did it take for the serial rapist Bill Cosbey to go to jail. And what about the Catholic Church child abuse scandal that has lasted over 2000 years, and is what inspired the Marque De Sade to write his novels which would be considered child pornography if they weren't of historical, cultural, educational value; and a part the Western Cannon of Literature. You can't stop history from happening. That was two senstences ago.

O: I'm going to need to see your ID I obliged O: Would you have anything to do with it? M: No, Officer. O: Do you mind if I look in your bag for any items that may have been stolen? I had a bowl in my bag. M: I'm sorry, Officer, but I do not consent to any searches. O: It's just to clear your name as a suspect. M: I'm sorry, Officer, I'm not consenting to any searches. O: What do you have to hide? M: I respectfully decline to answer any more questions without a lawyer present. Am I being detained, or am I free to go, Officer? O: Have a good night. M: You as well, Officer, I hope you find him. Then I left. Could have been arrested for the paraphernalia had I let him search my bag. There was also never any article in the newspaper about a burglary that night.

I was once stopped at a bus stop by police in the late evening. Was fully cooperative. They checked my ID, then thoroughly searched me, including every bit of my purse. Then they interrogated like why am I being here at this time in the part of the town where I don't live. I had to explain everything and was very stressed. Couldn't imagine that I'd have to give them reasons for simply exercising the freedom of movement. It can get very intimidating if you start answering questions. I was totally clean and sober. They let me go, but it was pretty stressful. So drawing a line to interrogation and searching would be probably a better option.

I want to say thank you to you Mr. Murphy, a few years ago I came across this video. A few weeks later my sister was driving me somewhere and we were pulled over. Even though my sister is six years older than I am she freaks out when authority is in her face. He told my sister that he had pulled her over because our license plate was missing. I informed him that the license plate was on the dash and since we had gotten into a wreck it was a little bent but we were told by another cop it was alright. He told me to shut up and that he wasn't speaking to me, I respectively told him that he didn't need to be rude. He then pulled his gun from the holder and told us to get out of the car, he then told my sister that he would be going through the car. I told him that he had no reason to do so and that and he did not have permission. I asked him if we were detained and if we could leave. He decided to tower over me and told me to sit down and shut up so he could speak with the adult. I repeated that he did not need to be rude and if we were allowed to leave. Through this all my sister was freaking out and shaking because a very tall big man stood over us with his weapon pulled. The whole thing was very scary but with your rules I was able to handle the situation in a way that we were able to get out of there without getting our car torn apart. So thank you very much :)

Rule #11, NEVER go to the station to try filing a complaint! All that's likely to happen is you're given the run-around, and from that point on the cops will make it a point to harass or even outright terrorize you... even going so far as to arrest you on false charges!

This video is very informative and helpful and I will definitely try to remember these tips, but it still doesn't solve the question "why do we have to act this way in the first place?" I'm second generation Japanese-American. I visit Japan every 2-3 years due to all my relatives residing there. There's a 180 degree difference on how Japanese police treat the public and how citizens treat the police. I've been stopped before by a Japanese officer because I flicked my cigarette butt. He said "I'm very sorry for the intrusion, but you cannot flick cigarette butts. It's against the law. I'm sorry may I see your ID?" An officer in the states would've said something like "HEY! Why did you do that? You didn't see me standing there? Show me your ID!" I said I don't have a Japanese ID but I do have my US driver's license and passport (he then looked a little confused because I speak fluently and look 100% Japanese). He checked them and asked me what I was doing in Japan. After his very polite police interrogation, he gave me a 5min lecture on how cigarettes are bad for you and that he used to be a smoker. The encounter ended him asking if I knew my way back to my aunt's condo. To me he was the textbook example on how police officers should approach and treat the public. He never gave me an order, he asked. I know police officers in other countries act like this too. Police in the US really needs to learn from other countries.

The answer to your question is right in your post "and how citizens treat the police" People are terrible to US Police officers all the time: they waste time asking stupid questions they already know the answers to, they refuse to provide their identification, they argue, they lie, they act like a-holes, and they try to kill the police officers just so they don't have to go to jail.

This is one of the best videos I have seen on this. Be polite and cooperative, but it's also important to know your rights. Too many people either go to one extreme or the other. They are complete jerks to police and end up creating unnecessary problems for themselves. And then you have other people who are far too cooperative. They make incriminating statements or consent to searches when they shouldn't. As for showing an ID, just show your ID if asked. That's not the hill you want to die on. My bank teller requires an ID. I'm not going to be worried about showing it to a cop. But definitely file a complaint concerning misconduct. As for them coming to door, you might want to answer to find out what they want. But don't invite them in unless you need their assistance, and don't consent to a search. And be very careful about what questions you answer. If they are trying to interrogate you or are trying to accuse you of a crime, exercise your fifth amendment rights and end the conversation. If the police enter without your consent, don't resist them. But make it clear you are not giving consent. If you are uncertain whether they have the legal right, this might help you later in court. Evidence illegally obtained can be thrown out.

But you raise an interesting point, you have made a false statement which you believe is true because you based it on the perceived power of said government. You have been brain washed into believing the government is so mighty that it could not only find, but also track and arrest the poster of a message within an hour. They are not that powerful, not even close. But, they are trying to become that powerful. They want 24/7 surveillance of absolutely everything, and it's getting close, but this is why we're waking up and seeing that it is in fact a police state and doing everything we can to reverse the tides of this degenerative change.

Madeline, Dear, you are not quite right, your & my(65) age get's NO Respect from these corrupt slugs. I watched 3 cops in Montana, surround a 110lb. disabled woman in a wheelchair, knock her around so that she fell out, and when she managed her way back in the chair, she accidentally ran over the foot of one of the "stormtroopers"/city police. They charged her with felony assault and lied about her actions. It was only my incensed testimony (from a window watching the entire thing, next door, that saved this poor woman, who was aged 62, on SSDI. They finally dropped the charges with my testimony. However, they started coming after me, and I too, am disabled, after I did that. ALL Cops are SOCIOPATHIC and CORRUPT. I agree, that your grandfather was a cop when most were humans in the USA. Eastern Canada checking in with this vid and I must say I have written down the replies to say to the RCMP or police so it is handy just in case. Just tonight a police officer called and then called again, I screen my calls mostly due to sale telemarkers that waste my time, and the police used the "sense of urgency for me to call him back combined with I would like to sort out this feud today because we all have better things to do with our time." NO, I did not return the call and knew that I was not obliged to talk to the police. In his second call he said that if I did not return his call he would be sending out an RCMP officer to my home to have a discussion. Again, the deceitful attempt of the police officer to get me to feel the sense of urgency. So, living in the peaceful country side we have a chain across our driveway to prevent visiting tourists from turning in or unexpected visitors. This light chain should send the message loud and clear to any visiting RCMP officer that he is not welcome or allowed unless he has a warrant. I reviewed this video and a few others that were Canadian tonight to refresh my memory and get in the right mind set. What a bizarre world we live in and I never would have thought in my life to be involved with this sort of situation; dealing with the police and or RCMP. But, youtube and the internet are so helpful and bring clarity for a better peace of mind. Cheers during Covid pandemic.
