    Facebook is literally one of the most cancerous businesses in the space. I agree, I am surprised nobody else has come along and taken their torch… I assume most people are just worried the next company will end up just as shady. And these days I would also assume that the majority of Facebooks active users are either aging people who recently figured it out, or underdeveloped countries where they appreciate being able to connect with people all over the world. I personally don’t even feel comfortable with facebook/instagram anymore, theres no point in using stupid social media apps that enable shady individuals to rake in billions.

    Most Americans have no idea how popular Whatsapp is outside of the US. It's *the* default communication app for _everything_. When I lived outside the US, it was how everyone communicates; not just with your friends, but also the landlord, work communication and calls, the bank, the tailor, restaurant reservations, even government communications. No one even asks if you have Whatsapp, its just assumed.

    I moved to a new state and I don’t stay in one place. But FB was telling me to prepare for new coming elections in my new state. Took me a while to figure out how they knew since I never updated anything on my profile. Then I realized they kept record of my credit card transactions from marketplace. To top it all, they blocked my account a few months later and requested me to submit my driver license or passport to prove it’s me. I think it was a blessing. I deleted the app. Did the same with instagram and wish I could do remove WhatsApp too. But have too many customers there. Phone battery last twice as much now.

    I admin a couple Facebook groups. It's the most broken software on the internet. Nothing works, the interface design is pointlessly inept, the community standards AI is a literal 90s era straight keyword lookup list with zero capacity for context, most of the official boilerplate has basic spelling and grammar errors, and if you're a spammer you essentially have free reign. Marketplace is essentially 100% scams, and even their advertising platform is dysfunctional to the point of being actually quite unsafe. Meanwhile hate speech runs unchecked and the platform is implicated in current ongoing actual warcrimes because they don't want to pay for the staff required to prevent any of this. Every group and page admin is pretty vocal about how much we'd love to quit the platform entirely, our communities in tow, the millisecond any viable alternative becomes available. The only thing FB does well is be a monopoly. I can't wait for it to die.

  • @neilbakangmodise232

    @neilbakangmodise232

    @@thatsguy1111 I don't necessarily see it as a decline per se. Facebook has probably hit the peak of its market share with about 3 billion users. Concerning the younger crowd, it's true that 19-year-olds aren't active on Facebook daily, but that doesn't automatically mean a decline, the appeal is not just there. But, Facebook is still in a way capturing that demographic in Instagram which I think we can all agree is not as popular as it was before, but non the less you get my point. There are numerous factors at play in the Facebook machine, and it's doing better than ever. Just look at their ad revenue, which is thriving despite the drop in usage among the younger demographic.

Balance sheet is still good until it’s not. Users move fast nowadays, no real moat. Disruption imminent. Zuck’s ‘determination’ is a liability. The problem with the idea that Zuck will gain an advantage in the metaverse space by using generative AI is twofold. Firstly, the prohibiting factor is still and always will be adoption. The initial adoption will be too slow and the upgrade cycle for consumers will likely also be too slow (outside of enthusiasts). Secondly, their advantage is not an advantage cause their competitors are not social media companies, but actual game companies with access to the same technology. Zuck absolutely cannot compete with game companies since they attract some of the most highly skilled generalist designers and engineers in the IT industry. Neither on quality, nor on cost.

If their goal is to provide an immersive social platform for VR (metaverse) they are in direct competition with multiplayer game developers. Game companies have been working to create these types of social spaces with hooks to keep people coming back for as long as there have been multiplayer/MMO games. There are regular MMOs, there are MMO games like Second Life, there is VR chat, etc. which aims to provide an immersive social experience. We can text our family member and we can send them photos via phone or email. I don’t know why us humans rely on these platforms in order to do so?! Baffles me and makes absolutely no sense🙄 Furthermore, family does not even care about this yet we keep saying that? Most people fail to grasp the true potential of Zuckerberg's metaverse strategy, but it is not a mere gamble. The fact is, human connection has the power to drive trillion-dollar businesses, and Zuck understands this. The new Quest 3 boasts impressive augmented reality capabilities, including gesture tracking like Apple's device. While many focus on the visual aspect of the metaverse, Zuckerberg recently demonstrated with Lex Freedman a method for creating avatars that are indistinguishable from real humans. Though scanning avatars currently takes time, this is just a computational challenge that will be resolved. Once lifelike avatars are integrated with other AR tech, businesses will be willing to pay huge amounts of money for the ability to have virtual and in-person teams in the same room.
