I only know the BSL alphabet, but my friend who had profoundly deaf parents taught me it when we were around 7 years old. I'm now 28 and remember it, its come in handy (pardon the pun) working in pubs! I'll always be grateful for him teaching me this.

It'd be the best thing to get petitions to be taught a country's sign language from the earliest school level or for all babies, whether deaf, hearing, blind, etc.

Fully support what Jazzy said and agree about learning BSL. BSL is a beautiful language as well as my first language (profoundly deaf) and it could break the communication barriers between hearing and deaf people.

I think this is so powerful, it's true learning sign really helps us to break barriers, thank you for sharing these points. A goal of mine is to learn sign language completely.

I have tried and failed to learn BSL numerous times in my teen years, I struggled because I had no one to converse with and practice with and I had little resources however, enough last week I decided enough is enough and I need to make it work. sorry in advance for the long message but here is peoples reason to learn sign: This is because I was working (I worked at the sealife centre) and I love having asking the kids about their fave animals were ect. but I had a deaf family come into the store last week and I felt awful. I felt awful because I couldn't converse with them and I couldn't do my best to give the little girl the same experience as every other child, I know she wouldn't think of it that way and that she was probably none the wiser as she looked like she had a great time but I knew I had failed and that I didn't give her the experience that I try to give everyone, so to me it mattered. She didn't even come up to the till to purchase her stuffed toy, her father (also deaf) did instead and I know she might just not have wanted to but a small part of me can't help wondering if she didn't bother coming up because she knew I wouldn't be able to speak her language so she didn't see the point. I know some basic signs so I did my best with her father and said thank you ect, but the interaction felt empty and like we didn't make a connection (if that makes sense). I want that connection with every guest that walks through the doors so if I feel like I have run out of resources for learning or like I want to give up, I will remember how I felt when I couldn't give that little girl that extra bit of the experience and I will use that to spur me on! I always had the desire to learn but I never succeeded and this time I will at least get to a conversational level!

How is it going as of now?

I’ve been learning dgs (German sign language) for about three years now and it’s really fun. It’s interesting how fast it became natural. When someone in another room / across the room wants something my first reflex is to sign my answer instead of calling over until I remember they don’t how how to sign. I absolutely don’t regret going to those courses !! More people should learn their countries sign language in my opinion ☺️

When I Was Three Years Old I Went Incredible Learned Swedish Sign Language Basic At First Then Growing Into Interesting SSL Categories. Now Currently 19 Years Old And Been A Native SSL Speaker Since Then.

Finished today's BSL class at 5, opened KZread, and this is at the top of my feed 😍

Those videos of you as a child are so precious 😊 especially since you so often hear of deaf (and hard of hearing) children who aren't being taught to sign at young age. I don't know BSL but have been studying Swedish Sign Language for almost 2 years at university now. Having studied other spoken languages before it has really been amazing and eye opening to learn a language in a different modality. It's the same learning process, yet so different. I'm positive it has changed my brain somehow 😄

Love this! I learned the alphabet in ASL when I was a little kid, and that made it a lot easier for me to learn some ASL as a teenager when I got the opportunity to take classes with a Deaf teacher! Now I'm learning some BSL too :-) I wish more schools offered sign language classes for everyone! So many benefits, plus it's fun.

Thank you for sharing this. I started learning sign language a few days ago and realised that it's International Day of Sign Languages today. What a coincidence. I really agree that it it is something that seem very overlooked from my experience and it feels important to stay inclusive. I love your video and hope I can keep it going and learn more. I work at an airport and while I sign in SSE and I can translate BSL to SSE i just can’t seem to get the grammar into my head but my customers love when they come check in and I start even just trying … even had one tell me that even tho I was communicating with SSE they were glad to at least get access to more information than just handing back and forth notes .. it’s also encouraged me to learn some ASL for our international guests as we have a lot of American and Canadian guests that travel through my airport!! Its amazing to see the looks on their faces when they see me a hearing person try!!

It's so incredibly convenient to be able to ask or say something easily when the wind or music is really loud or communicate through window like you said. 😃 I also completely agree with the point of the confidence, i feel it's really good to exercise being more expressive with you face and gestures this way and showing more emotions might be helpful for people on the autism spectrum understand you better.

You could add a bonus point/reason... you'll never have to turn the subtitles on again! 👍😊

Hi Jazzy! I am hard of hearing born into a hearing family so when I was younger I went to mainstream schooling from elementary through high school and I had taken a lot of speech therapy for I can communicate with others and I have never learned Sign language because my mind was on other things but I am glad I am learning Sign language now as a young adult!! I love Sign language, I am learning PSE which stands for pidgin signed English it takes ASL signs and use them in the English sentence structure 🥰🥰🥰

I’m deaf myself (recently within the last 3 years after 10 years of deteriorating loss) and I think the problem is there’s lack of recognised boards, schools, online training courses that don’t charge a big fee. I understand people have to make a living but I think the costs of even trying to learn put lot of people off. I’ve started learning BSL and so far I’ve spent close to £500 and I’m nowhere near fluent. For me this isn’t a problem but for s lot of people who may want to learn this makes it impossible for them. Learning resources for BSL should be free to access in my opinion that way it’s accessible for everybody.

I'm trying to learn Thai Sign Language but it's so difficult to find it, don't have a lot of online courses. Also, mostly it's in university, but I'm still in high school. I don't have other choice so I learn from KZread or with interpreter screen instead.

As the demographic of someone who wants to learn sign language, because I don't know it... This taught me nothing :(

i have been trying to convince the secretary of state for education that our kids should be learning sign language in all our schools as it would help in so many situations later in life like if you meet someone whos deaf if you yourself become deaf which happens a lot with age and other causes . please can someone more forward than me start up something to get bsl in our schools for our future generation.

I am hearing impaired, I can only hear certain voice pitches and certainly not if the speaker is behind me. I can't wear hearing aids as I am allergic to whatever they are made of, probably latex. my wife used to hear for me in shops and supermarkets and pull or nudge me if I was in someone's way alas I never learned sign, but do rely quite a bit on lip reading. However my dear wife passed away 7 1/2 years ago and I have been finding it tough going, especially with accents and ignorant people in shops and supermarkets , ok they may have asked me several time "excuse me" as I may be in their way but instead of being polite or maybe "getting the hint" no I am shoved and pushed, and on two occasions been literally knocked to the ground. Despite being a senior citizen and having walking stick, damn ignorant, well to be honest both times it was huge women! Blind people get white sticks or canes, deaf people just get grief! Being totally alone in the world does not help much either. I miss the dawn chorus, and little things like that ,but hey ho I have life and that's precious, although sometimes I just wish to be with my wife.

I'm sorry do you think if I learn bsl another person that is not from Britain could understand me or is better if I learn American sign language?

Can you hear your own voice or do you hear nothing at all? Do you even know what words are supposed to sound like or even what the British accent is like? Your hearing sister speaks normally with a British accent. When you spoke on some videos it sounded like a deaf accent and it was hard to understand what you were saying. Were you sad at the Queen’s passing? Now her son Charles is king. Do you think in sign language like how hearing people have an inner voice in their heads? When you read, how do you perceive letters and words if you don’t know what they sound like? I live in the US, How is BSL different than ASL? The US and England both speak English as a spoken and written language, but sign is different than English. And British English has different words than American English for some things. Like a truck is called a lorry in the UK.

I don’t mean this as a negative at all but your face looks really orange in this video...I hope you’re okay ❤️
