10 Reasons to NOT Get Dreadlocks

Let me tell you ten reasons you should not get dreadlocks. I usually say all the wonderful and amazing things about locs but the truth is there are some reasons why you should not get them. Maybe they will stop you and maybe you will think they are no big deal but either way you are armed with knowledge before you start your journey and make the commitment that dreadlocks are. We will discuss everything from the pain, to the money, to the haters, to the time it takes to wash them and even cultural appropriation. (Yes I go on and on a bit but I think it is an important topic within the community that should be discussed.) These are 10 reasons you should not get them but I swear I could do a video on 100 reasons why you should get dreadlocks!

Thank you so much for touching on the cultural appropriation aspect. Acknowledging it and really recognizing that when white people get dreads it gets treated differently than for people of colour is so important and you didn't try to ignore that. I've found a lot of white folks with dreads sorta ignore or just refuse to speak on it as if it's not a reality. Thank you for saying we need to listen and respect when people ask us about locs and that topic. It's not the time to argue it's a time to listen and maybe explain if that's where the conversation leads us.

Absolutely. I never want to skip over the topic because I’ve seen too many people have silly debates over it in dreadlock forums and I think most of the time, the point is missed. Thank you so much for your support and words. 💕🙏🏻

You did a great job! that last one was the big one! Culture! Im from a christian family and they frown upon dreads however Sampson in the bible had 7 Long Locs! I also read that people used to knot their hair (dreads) to keep their soul from leaving through the crown of their head. They believe having locked hairs would make it harder for the soul to leave the body. Fun facts! haha

I definitely know that my mom and people respond to me differently and with anger, especially my mom, when I have my dreadlocks. However, I’m a cosmetologist and I’ve known so many people with dreadlocks that it’s more worth the investment to the point where I don’t even have to think.

A lot of real talk here, things I gained (even with struggle) were patience, and the timeframe for washing and drying. I ended up gaining patience, and bought a secondhand salon drying chair for wash days (game changer). I love your videos, keep up the great work Liza!

I really appreciate you touching on the culture aspect. I think you handled it perfectly. It just comes down to intention and understanding, from both sides. When I see a white person with dreads I try my best to think that they have good intentions and I try to understand why they made the decision to get them. I also think its important for a white person to understand what we go through for having the same style, and understand where a black person is coming from when they are skeptical.

I know that you and your locs have gone through a big transformation since this was made, but just wanted to say, I think the look here is so beautiful. Love the length and the loose hair, this is similar to how I wear mine :) I agree about the cost of maintenance, and will add, it is worth every cent. My hair is fine, and my loctician consulted with me and worked very carefully, always with attention to the health of hair and scalp. She helped me with things I didn't know about dreads, so I am grateful to have her. That and a high quality shampoo, equally important!

I love your vid and I love my locs. I love the conversation they create and all the questions and even the ever present talks about "cultural appropriation" even though locs are world wide and all throughout history. I'll talk to anyone about them and even hear out abuse and then discuss said abuse...... But touching them is not on. FCUKOFFANDDIEFORTOUCHINGTHEM I scream to my self and politely encourage them to stop while backing away for their safety. Mine.

I agree with everything you said. And yes 11... they can be heavy!! Specially wet! And this is one of the reasons I got dreadlocks: make myself accept my hair as they are - no dye, going grey! I do not regret any of my choices. I feel so much better with myself. And my scalp thanks me for not coloring my hair anymore!
