That's not true. That's what the media and their elite owners want us to believe, but Australia is a very class-divided country, egalitarianism is a fallacy. Just have a look at how some of the Indigenous people live in the centre of Australia and then in harbourside areas of Sydney. That's the extremes, but disparities exist throughout every city and town in Australia and always has existed. Australians also have a long history of racism and hostility to foreigners, so that throws the egalitarian myth out the window.

That's why we watch these videos mate. I have seen similar from others - this girl is refreshingly smart and easy on the eyes comparatively deserving a sub from me. After watching numerous videos of hers I have admittedly gotten a little teary at some of the points she has made - is that weird? Do I have issues I wonder. Or is this some alien semblance of pride I am feeling?

As new arrivals in Brisbane from Unzud, my wife and I were moving into our new house, busy unpacking when a head popped around our open door. "G'day, you folk moving in, eh? I'm Sam. How's it goin?" "Hi, nice to meet you Sam. I'm Michael and this is my wife Jenny." "Good to meet you Mick. You too Jen. This here's me missus Rhonda, but we call her Rhon. You need a hand? You wanna beer?" And on it went. That was in 1980, and Sam and Rhonda are still our best mates even though they moved back to Melbourne mid-80s. Cheers, enjoy your new life and discoveries in Oz.

My wife is American, she migrated here to Melbourne from Washington State & we are getting ready to celebrate our 10th wedding anniversary on the 2nd of Feb. We got married on a beautiful flawless Summer day. It feels amazing that we have reached our 1st 10 years married, our 1st milestone. Of course we are gonna be doing something special. You probably never noticed some of these things because she's GENERALIZING.... she literally compared the strength of aboriginals with Europeans that came over and just lumped everyone together 😂 I Love Australia, I am an American just like her.....the only difference between us is I realize there's ALL KINDS of different types in BOTH Countries.... these videos that talk about "this is this and that is that" about Americans OR Australians is a little corny.... and probably offensive to some people. Not me, she can say what she wants, but an aboriginal or an Indigenous person from the states might take offense. Anyway, take care! 😊

I'm an Aussie, living in Brissy. You talk about Australians being laid back... I heard my son say that I am so laid back, if I was any more laid back, you'd have to look for a pulse! And yes we love to joke. My mum always said you can't laugh at other people unless you can laugh at yourself, and frankly, I love to laugh at other people, so yes, I can laugh at myself too. Interestingly though, I was making a few self deprecating jokes on a chat site that had a lot of South Africans .. my friends said to me that it looked like I was seeking attention. No, we seriously like to laugh at ourselves every now and then...

Great video about Australians. Thanks for coming here and embracing the culture with open arms. Yes, we don't get dressed up unless it's what is considered a special occasion. Some people like to wear makeup and we also support people's individuality. So, if you like red lipstick. We will also defend your right to choose how you dress etc. No one has the right to tell another person how to live. But Aussie's will voice their opinions. Then if you agree go for it. If not wear or do it anyway. It's your life. Make it a good one. ☺

Listening to this, I tried to relate it to my own life and yep, most of what you said absolutely applies. Life is about living and not trying to keep up with the Joneses. Great vid as usual.

You have fairly well nailed it! I would probably add in the spirit of volunteering. From volunteer firefighters, marine rescue and ambulance, right down to the volunteers in hospitals and community organisations. My parents came out from war torn Europe and my siblings and I were all born here in Aus and they loved and embraced the Aussie way of life! Thanks for this great reaction! You are definitely becoming an Aussie... I actually survived stage 4 metastasised Ovarian Cancer 2 .5 years ago and my specialist said I was one of the most resilient people he had ever met! I wear that as a badge of honour.... I couldn’t have got through it without my amazing mates and community!

I think you've described Australians as we'd like to believe ourselves to be. Sometimes I wonder if we ever lived up to the hype, but it sounds like we still give it a pretty fair crack.

Kaitlyn, thanks for taking the time and learning to love us Aussies. I think our irreverence helps keep everything real here. We don't like or appreciate "tall poppies" here, try that on, no matter who you are and Aussies will quickly bring you down. Some famous Australians have found that out for themselves and have been brought back to earth pretty quickly and even our Prime Ministers are called by their first names e.g Kevin (Rudd) Bob (Hawke) or Albo etc. I think that is where the US gets it wrong, once a President always a President, no not here!

I am enjoying listening to your view of us Aussies and our country Kaitlyn. You mentioned how strong we are, mentioning the convicts. Paul Hogan had a comedy skit show here back in the 1980’s, and one of the episodes was a send up of the arrival of the convicts. They bordered the ships in the UK with cockney accents, got off the ships in Sydney Cove with Australian accents, and any convicts that got off the ships with cockney, Irish etc accents were pelted with rotten fruit etc until they spoke with an Aussie accent, usually 5 minutes after getting off the ship. Lol. The strength and resilience comes from not only the hatred the convicts had for British authority, but also the very difficult life the convicts and free settlers endured. Australia is a hard country, unforgiving if you don’t learn very quickly to respect her. There is a poem called ‘My Country’ by Dorothea McKellar which explains our land very well. One line goes “those who do not love her, will not understand”.

I love Americans too. Thanks for the kind video. I married an American and loved my experience when living in DC. She and her two kids have now lived with me in Australia since 2019. Thank you USA.

This channel makes me smile. I am also an Aussie with an American wife who arrived over here about 20 years ago...I take the kids back to see their grandparents, their mother stays home here...Americans with a university education usually find it easy to get a job.

I LOVE the way that the 98% of our students who are either 1st or 2nd generation immigrants embrace our values, interests & culture ... my students are loving their journey to become an "Aussie" ...irregardless of the colour of their skin, their country of origin, their religious beliefs, or the language they speak at home, they all so much appreciate the fact that they had the chance to come to Australia!!! Many of our families fled from war torn countries with nothing ... yet they have arrived here and are prepared to learn English, work hard, assimiliate into our culture, and make the most of the fact that they can become Australian Citizens!! I have students whose parents were doctors, engineers or teachers in their home countries ... but because their qualifications are not recognised in Australia they cannot work in those fields, and are working as labourers, painters or gardeners!! However, they are still prepared to work a fulltime labouring job and a part-time factory job while upgrading their qualifications at the same time!!!! And I can't believe how many of our parents pay for extra Maths & English tutoring for their children!! It is sad that the US has such a bad attitude to immigrants !!!

A wheel dropped off my trailer the other day and they just came out and got me going again . Good stuff mates.

It still amazes me as an Aussie how easy it is to create a working bee with a carton of piss.

Thanks Kaitlyn. We certainly are all those things. I’m known for my quick wit and my American friends love it. I visited my American friends in Spain. They moved there to get away from the Orange Cheeto back 2016. I had the best time staying with them. I have a tradition I started with my family and friends. Anyone who a buys a house gets a house warming gift. But the gift is the worst thing imaginable. It generally comes from an OP shop, trash or treasure market and costs about $2.00. It has to be displayed for 12 months. I have found the most frightening gifts for people….. Hilarious. I got them something just awful and was helped by another friend of theirs from Switzerland. She said it was the funniest thing she had ever done and will never go to the market without laughing about it. She is also adopting my tradition ha ha ha. Have a good day everyone.

I am Australian my husband is of Greek decent and my late father-in-law welcomed a widowed Vietnamese lady and became a substitute grandfather to her 2 children. This family is valued as part of out family. This is how I look at Australia we are multi cultural.

I am so glad you have had a great experience moving here. I do think its easier if you have an Aussie family that you become part of because you get help - I think its tougher if you move as a couple. But I am really glad that your move has been a success.

Your videos really make me appreciate this country. It's easy to get caught up in comparisons with what you don't have (home ownership being foremost in my mind pretty much all the time) and forget that Australia is a pretty great place to live in.

You could call it a cultural thing with me personally. My Finnish Grandma taught us how to be a Lady, but she was always telling me "Get dressed up to go to town!". I'm an Aussie born and bred. It's taken time for me to be comfortable with going to town without make-up. I have an ongoing health problem, but if I'm well enough I'll definitely wear nail polish, make-up, jewellery with good casual clothes. But however you dress is just fine over here and I love that. Well I also have a dramatic streak and am definitely a bit of a kooky, off the wall type. I like showing it in how I dress, but I don't go for weird personally. But generally yes we're Ladylike and Gentlemenly in how we treat others. Only really getting upset if someone else is being treated badly. But I do have two set of Four Times Great Grandparents including the British Explorer John Oxley and I have mixed feelings about. What happened to our Indigenous population back then sickens me. They're on the maternal side of my family. But Mum's parents certainly weren't racist. Her little sister used to play with an Indigenous little boy back in the 40's. They certainly didn't care about raised eyebrows. They're still family friends to this day. His daughter and I have been Close Friends since our teens in the 90's. I had three Close Friends instead of one Best Friend, we're still close and anybody could/can hang out with us. I would pretty much spend time with anybody at High School without it being awkward, thanks to my personally. I've always managed to alt least leave a good impression or make new friends wherever I go, without trying.

We do appreciate the simple things, but it's being with our mates that we appreciate the most. I don't need to spend a cent to have a great time, as long as I'm with my mates - laughing heaps, taking time out from the daily grind, forgetting my worries. You can only do that with mates. Let's face it; being with your mates is a huge part of what makes life worth living.

I liked listening to you speak well of Australians. It was very accurate. I've had quite a long life so far and so much of it has been characterized by 'laughter'. Something like one long Seinfeld episode - minus the stress. I love that we're a classless society - or that the classes all speak the same language or treat each other like neighbours - for the most part. I spoke to several random people in the city of Melbourne today. Two I asked 'are you ok?', one I asked 'are you happy?', about four I made some comment on what they were doing, and another was a homeless man who I bought some food and drink for. Oh and there were several I waved to. They 'all' smiled in response. Yes, I hope we never lose our friendliness. Maybe Australia can become the world's Shangri-La. Or already is.

Another great video Kaitlyn! Further on Halloween. It's a lot more popular now than it was when I was growing up. Where I live in the inner west (Drummoyne), nearly every house gets decorated with spider webs and Jack-o-lanterns. The local Real Estate throws a barbie for the locals and we close off our street so that the kids can dress up and have a safe space to go trick or treating while the adults stand around eating and having a beer... 🙂

Spot on observations. You can really tell the difference in the observations from someone that genuinely lives here versus people who spent a couple of weeks here on holidays. Yeah most office have "smart casual" drsss code. Unless there is a meeting on or you're in a certain profession or hold a certain high position. I used to wear make-up when I was younger, these days I rarely do. It's usually just a tinted moisturiser with sunscreen and a lip balm - sometimes one with a rose tint. If its a special occasion then I'll make an effort. I think our climate plays a part too, especially in summer. I don't want all that crap on my face. Just let my skin breathe. But everyone is different and some women love make up and that's also absolutely fine. No one should tell you not to wear your lipstick or anything. You should always do what feels right for you. Personally I think you look good either way. So you can't lose 😊. I have to say I'm "un Australian" in one way, sports lol. I don't play sports and I don't really follow sports. But I do like doing being out in nature, the beach, going on walks and hikes etc. I think Aussies are very connected to nature, we're outdoorsy and crave that regular connection. Even if it's just going out for a walk for some fresh air. We don't tend to jump in the car for every little thing the way a lot of Americans and Brits do. We'll often walk instead if we can. So true about the casual chat and conversation even with strangers. Mostly it's nice but sometimes, just sometimes it can be hard to get away when you're in a hurry haha. Mateship is the word in regards to helping each other out. In times of need, it times of natural disasters etc. People that don't get us think we are scared of our government and oppressed.🤣 (As if. You know how we feel about them. No one drags pollies like we do). For example most complied with pandemic restrictions in the early days, to protect each other and our healthcare system and workers. We are for the most part, able to respond and think as a collective and a community when needed, in dire times. As opposed to staunch individualism over community. Of course Australia like anywhere, isn't perfect, in regards to the place, the government and the people. But seeing your list of positive makes me stop and remember, yeah we are lucky for the most part.

Aussies are lucky because we have such great Outdoors to be outdoorsy in! Who wouldn't want to walk down to the local shops if there's lovely weather to do it in? Scared of our government and oppressed? How ridiculous. If sensibly listening to the government in order to take precautions about things like bushfires and Covid is "being oppressed"... seriously, what is it that they think we are being oppressed over? Compulsory voting? That's not oppression, that's civic duty.

Sport is also a great social foundation that keeps you fit. Many people play a scratch match of soccer or touch footy on their lunch breaks. You should try mixed indoor netball - you don't have to be good to have fun. And Mark would like it too, I am sure. It's funny that you get comments about wearing makeup. I'm sure they just want to let you know they like you the way you are. I hope so at least.

Your remark about makeup took me all the way back to about 1971, when I was working for a US construction company on the building of the Tom Price - Paraburdoo rail line in the Pilbara of Western Australia. There was a part of the camp at Tom Price that was made up of demountable houses for the company bosses and their families. A mate of mine worked on the camp maintenance crew, repairing all sorts of things around a big camp of over 700 people. One day he went to a house in the "Seppo" part of town to repair something. He couldn't find the problem, so he knocked on the front door, which was promptly opened by a young American woman. She listened attentively to his problem, but then suddenly clasped both hands to her face and shrieked, "Oh my God - I don't have my face on!" and slammed the door and disappeared back into the house! He never fixed the problem because he never found out just what it was and he never saw the young woman again, with or without her "face" on! 🤣

The laid back thing is something we should not take for granted. I’ve lived in many countries and places over many years. Celebrity politicians are the exception- we need to stomp on that fast.

You're so right about the diversity thing. We'll be happy to have a few drinks with you on 4th July, so long as you have a few drinks with us on Australia Day. We'll be happy to accept an invite to an Eid al-Fitr celebration if there's a bbq with some good lamb chops up for grabs, and we'll return the favour by making sure we have some halal food on the menu next time we have a bbq on the weekend.

Australia has been pretty much multicultural from early in our history. Even in colonial times we had migrants from the British isles, Mediterranean countries like Italy, Greece, and Yugoslavia, as well as countries like China. Following the Vietnam war, we had an influx of Vietnamese immigrants fleeing the communist regime. From the 80s onwards we've seen our diversity expand, I had friends in my primary school classes with ancestry from countries like Pakistan and Sri Lanka. In the 90s we took in refugees from the war in the former Yugoslavia. In Australia, unlike in the US, we don't have communities or neighbourhoods of a single ethnic group. We don't have black neighbourhoods or white neighbourhoods, we all live side by side. We are a very welcoming people who don't care what your skin colour is, you treat us fairly and we will treat you fairly. One last thing, we are fiercely loyal and protective of our mates and loved ones. You come here, we will welcome you with open arms and fight anyone who thinks that they can hurt you.

Kaitlyn, I'm a 72 year old Australian Male, and, by heck, you are bloody fabulous!.

I think the most important one is the Aussie sense of humour when it comes to connecting with others. I lived in the States for a couple of years, a couple of decades ago. The only time I really laughed was when I was with other Australians or British people. Add to that, my humour seemed to offend people and unfortunately I found that Americans take themselves far too seriously, but it seems you're fitting in rather well, so welcome!

Yeah we are pretty casual. I remember once on the program Q&A when the Prime Minister at the time Kevin Rudd (in 2013 I think after the leadership challenge - not his first time as PM) was on the panel and a member of the audience asked him a question and started with something like "oh hi Kevin ...." One of the comments that appeared at the bottom of the screen (Q&A were showing comments viewers send in in reaction to the content of the show) said something to the effect of 'Australia - the only place in the world where you can call the leader of your country by their first name'. Those weren't the exact words but it was something to that effect - I'm very proud that we as Australians feel comfortable to call our leader (our Prime Minister) by their first name but also sad that this isn't the normal thing in many other countries - whether you are the King, Prime Minister, President, or whoever else, you are at the end of the day just a human being like everyone else and we are all equal.

5:59 I make Jelly for the kids. It is the most healthy treat and they love it. jelly is one thing that must be made at home as it does not have a shelf life and in the heat up here it would turn to water. Great for hair and nails.
