10 Questions about the Holy Spirit

Is the Holy Spirit an impersonal force? What are some common misconceptions about the Holy Spirit and what are some vital truths to know to live in the power of the Spirit? Sean and Scott Rae speak with fellow Biola professor Fred Sanders about these questions and his new book The Holy Spirit: An Introduction.

Since the holy spirit is a force, it cannot be seen . That is why a visible sign was given to show that God had anointed: Jesus. A dove. The disciples at Pentecost. Tongues as if of fire. This showed onlookers that something had come upon these individuals which they couldn't see.

Sometimes there are people who write books who add nothing to our understanding. This is one of those cases. So many books out there which already say these things. In my life i have learned that some things become clear when we experience them and some things blow our theology when we experience them. I am currently reading Eusebius and asking the question how did the martyrs suffer with such joy. My guess is that it is a powerful indwelling of the Spirit. Something i experinced when dealing with a tumour on my spine. I found then that it is possible to endure something beyond anything description with joy. Only experience could teach me this fully.

Just to clarify where I’m coming from. I’m spirit filled born again christian who speaks daily in tongues. In my view we miss the holy spirit and one of the central messages of the Gospel as long as we see the holy spirit as a person. We need to go back to the old testament hebrew language of Ruach i.e. the breath and presence of God. Because of the language, the israelites in the old testament never came to their mind that the spirit of God is a person. How is your breath a person. In semitic language it only means you are very near to God when you feel his breath. The holy spirit is the presence of God. Wherever the spirit is there is God. We are the temple of God and our heavenly father lives in us, that is makes us his resting place. That’s the image of the dove resting on Jesus and that’s the image of God resting after creation and that’s the main reason why the 7th day sabbath is declared holy. God living among and in us, that’s the central message and that happens when God rests in his temple. The dove, the spirit of God, finds a resting place

They answer the question about praying to the Holy Spirit. What about worshipping the Holy Spirit? There are scriptures where people worship God (the Father), and some where people worship Jesus (the Son). But I can't find any scriptures where people worshipped the Holy Spirit. Maybe I just didn't see them. Are we ever encouraged in scripture to worship the Holy Spirit? And if not, would that change the way we think about the Trinity?

YHWH Elohim is ONE. The LORD our God is ONE. When we pray, if we believe in a triune God, we are praying to Him (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). Yes! We want to look at scripture as our authority and follow the example of what we see in prayer (and all things). At the same time, can we say we may lack more examples of prayer to the Holy Spirit because most of the content of scriptures is dated prior to Acts 2? In the end, if we want to be technical, we can say: “I pray to the Father, through and because of the work of the Son, by the power of the Holy Spirit.” This was very interesting to listen to.

Sorry Sean, I am all about "representing" the Holy Spirit correctly, but it does seem that the speakers do not understand the symbolism in portraying the Holy Spirit in specific ways in art and literature, e.g., Him wearing green. It is a symbol. The artist did not think that the Holy Spirit wears green clothing. Belittling an artist's or writer's portrayal without considering symbolism comes off as petty. Is it right to make an artistic representation of the Spirit? Well, thats a different question.

New Covenant Whole Gospel: How many modern Christians cannot honestly answer the first three questions below? Who is now the King of Israel in John 1:49? Is the King of Israel now the Head of the Church, and are we His Body? Why did God allow the Romans to destroy the Old Covenant temple and the Old Covenant city, about 40 years after His Son fulfilled the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34 in blood at Calvary? What the modern Church needs is a New Covenant Revival (Heb. 9:10) in which members of various denominations are willing to re-examine everything they believe and see if it agrees with the Bible, instead of the traditions of men. We need to be like the Bereans. It will be a battle between our flesh and the Holy Spirit. It will not be easy. If you get mad and upset when someone challenges your man-made Bible doctrines, that is your flesh resisting the truth found in God's Word. Nobody can completely understand the Bible unless they understand the relationship between the Old Covenant given to Moses at Mount Sinai and the New Covenant fulfilled in blood at Calvary. What brings all local churches together into one Body under the blood of Christ? The answer is found below. Let us now share the Old Testament Gospel found below with the whole world. On the road to Emmaus He said the Old Testament is about Him. He is the very Word of God in John 1:1, 14. Awaken Church to this truth. Jer 31:31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: Jer 31:32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by husband unto them, saith the LORD: Jer 31:33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Is the most important genealogy in the Bible found in Matthew 1:1 (Gal. 3:16)? Is God's Son the ultimate fulfillment of Israel (John 1:49)? Why has the modern Church done a pitiful job of sharing the Gospel with modern Orthodox Jews? Why would someone tell them they are God's chosen people and then fail to share the Gospel with them? Who is the seed of the woman promised in Genesis 3:15? What did Paul say about Genesis 12:3 in Galatians 3:8, 3:16? Who is the "son" in Psalm 2? Who is the "suffering servant" of Isaiah 53? Who would fulfill the New Covenant promised in Jeremiah 31:31-34? Who would fulfill the timeline of Daniel chapter 9 before the second temple was destroyed? Why have we not heard this simple Old Testament Gospel preached on Christian television in the United States on a regular basis? Once a person comes to understand the New Covenant promised to Israel and Judah in Jeremiah 31:31-34, which is found fulfilled by Christ during the first century in Hebrews 8:6-13, and Hebrews 10:16-18, and specifically applied to the Church in 2 Corinthians 3:6-8, and Hebrews 12:22-24, man-made Bible doctrines fall apart. Let us now learn to preach the whole Gospel until He comes back. The King of Israel is risen from the dead! (John 1:49, Acts 2:36) We are not come to Mount Sinai in Hebrews 12:18. We are come instead to the New Covenant church of Mount Zion and the blood in Hebrews 12:22-24. 1Jn 3:22 And whatsoever we ask, we receive of him, because we keep his commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in his sight. 1Jn 3:23 And this is his commandment, That we should believe on the name of his Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as he gave us commandment. 1Jn 3:24 And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us. The following verses prove the Holy Spirit is the master teacher for those now in the New Covenant. Jer 31:34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. Mar 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost. Joh 14:26 But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you. Act 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost. 1Co 12:13 For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit. 1Jn 2:27 But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him. @SpotterVideo Excellently said, my friend! How rare is it to find someone who surely knows and is willing to speak the truth! I was once so confused & entangled with all these false doctrines/teaching, but the LORD spared my life 2 years ago to bring me closer to Him than ever before in my life. The Holy Spirit led me over a few weeks late at night, to pick my Bible up from where I kept it on the floor beside my bed. I hadn't really studied it in decades & even then, I was under questionable teachers. I then, due to several health issues, had lost the ability to retain what read. Therefore, I left my No. 1 hobby behind. When God was speaking to me, I was in disbelief thinking I could no longer read. He not only gave me back this precious gift almost instantaneously, He gave me a hunger for the Word of God still building. He let me walk free of walkers or cane, now almost perfect blood sugar, chf almost normal, no longer need glasses to see (cataract surgery), have lost 75+ lbs, and He's still working on me! In this journey I have learned all about the damnable dispensationalism & it's effects on everything/everyone surrounding us. I've incorporated history of Christianity, wars, societies, a nation's history, and a deep dive in America since before Christopher Columbus. I've done a deep study on Revelation, Isaiah, Ezekiel, & Jeremiah, esp. God's promises to Abraham were fulfilled even according to Joshua's last address to the congregation in Joshua 14-16 with him even really saying that they were going to ultimately lose their land. Jeremiah, where the "divorcement" of Israel & Judah could not have been made clearer even though they would be allowed to again return (a few) to the land (not ownership). This was so the real Promise of tge Messiah would be fulfilled in line of David. Afterwards, they still wouldn't repent, He gave them 40 years, then annialated all. You are absolutely right that modern churches have got things so backward and refuse chastisement whatsoever, in fact, it just keeps getting worse, just like He said it would! There is a young man on YT named Tudor Alexander with channel "The Dance of Life " that does a great job teaching. He is a teacher not video streamer-not going for theatrical. His programs are long but extremely interesting for the few who really want to learn. He does have a Calvinist slant which I'm still researching scripturesbeing raised Baptist. I'm spot on with him on Everything else he's taught. Hundreds of videos. He's only 1 of teachers I've encountered over the last 1.5 years that gave helped me, but my main teacher had and will be the Holy Spirit. Thank you so much for your post. I'm going to share with all that will listen.

The word SPIRIT means several things as used in the Bible. However, God's holy spirit is a force that God has at his disposal to make things happen. That is why it is referred to as God's holy spirit. Something that belongs to God. It can be pour out (Acts 2:16-18). It can be given as a gift (Luke 11:13). Jesus and others used this holy spirit to do miracles. Logically, nothing can happen unless some force acts. Newton's first law.

It just goes to show how ppl love to insert their own ideas about God into the text. The Bible doesn't even remotely imply that the Father looks like an old king. Just because Daniel says His hair is like wool doesn't mean He looks like an old man. Rev. 1 describes Christ as currently having hair like wool, and yet none of the false portrayals of Him in art ever depicts Him as looking like an old man.

So why would it be wrong to say the Holy Spirit is the Father's personal spirit poured out and actively at work in believers? That the spirit is personal but not a separate person. 1. Jesus had the spirit and said the "father was in him" and prayed the same for his followers, and said the father and son would make their abode with us. 2. Matt 28:19 is not about the nature of God, it's about our baptizing into new life and all examples in Acts say baptize "in the name of Jesus" 3. Nearly all cases have a neuter pronoun used of the spirit, and the He is a liberty taken in translation. 4. 2 cor 17-18 says the Lord is the spirit. 5. 1 cor 2:11 says it is the spirit of a person who knows their thoughts, not the spirit of another person, and it directly relates this between God and man. "For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. If the spirit is the Father's spirit, then it is how we have fellowship with the father and son. We have access through christ in one spirit. God's spirit, from the father, through christ, in our hearts.

Father , Son, Holy Spirit .. When the righteous requirements of the Old Covenant was fulfilled at the moment of Christs water baptism .. is when the Holy Spirit was now with Christ or fully anointed him to begin his earthly ministry by fasting for forty days in the desert as His final prep. Here's food for thought .. The Father gives the command - John 10:29 / The Son carries out the command - John 15:9-11 / John 14:6-7 / The Holy Spirit empowers the command - John 3:33-35 / Only through being washed in the blood of Christ can one be indwelt by the Holy Spirit through the confession of faith as our bodies become the temple of the Holy Spirit. He has come to draw attention to Jesus , not himself. be blessed .. 1 John 5:6-8 🐑🍷🍞✝🕊💖🙏

The support in Scripture for seeing the Holy Spirit as a person is weak. No reason to be biased toward reading it the way Fred Sanders said we should, except for tradition. The Holy Spirit does not have a name. The Father and the Son have names. The Holy Spirit never sends greetings. The Father and the Son send greetings. The Holy Spirit is never characterized as a person in the OT, and it is a stretch to claim that is so in the NT. Flimsy arguments presented.

Trinity claims that 3 = 1. Makes no sense at all as 3 is 3 and 1 is 1. When Christians pray, who are they praying to? Father, Son or Holy Spirit? Also not a single verse in the entire Bible where Jesus says he is God. I believe in monotheism but not Christianity.

You almost sound hostile... You are not Christian? Consider, Isaiah 55:8 “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." You think, "making sense," in human terms as being so highly important. Perhaps, God sees this all very differently.

I'm pretty sure we are only able to understand God as He has revealed Himself to us. He is a mystery in many ways. In the case of the persons of God, we can see there are three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This is where the word Trinity comes from. You've probably heard this before. I'm pointing out the obvious. If it isn't obvious then perhaps another reading of the Bible would be helpful.

There are lots of verses in the Gospels with the context that Jesus claimed to be equal with God/ God. I’ll just give you 2 examples, the Pharisees wanted to stone him, Jesus asked for which good work do you want to stone me for, they replied not a good work but for blasphemy, claiming to be God John 10: 31-33 Jesus confronted again by the Jews, about seeing Abraham, responded, before Abraham was born, I am. Same I Am God the Father said to Moses. John 8: 48-59. The truth is there my friend, I hope you find it. ❤️

@@glassworks4850 Muslims are the only Non-Christians that believe in Jesus. It is more logical to say Jesus was a prophet of God as the Muslims claim. Jesus prayed in the Bible. If he was God, who did he pray to? Himself? since he is God?

Since the Holy Spirit isn't a name it must be the only holy spirit in Heaven or elsewhere. Some think it is the feminine part of God and that does make some sense given the fact there is a saying "Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned." The bible says you are chit out of luck ifn you piss it off.
