10 Poorest Places in The UK
What are the poorest places in the UK? The last thing that’ll come to mind when the UK is mentioned is poverty. It’s not among the countries you’ll associate poverty with. This should be clearly noted as we begin. Yet, not every part of Great Britain has the affluence of London, Edinburgh, or Glasgow. Some places in the UK are poor. We’re here to show you the 10 poorest places in the UK.
These places are the same neighborhood with the biggest shortages of basic social infrastructure and facilities such as playgrounds, parks, pubs, shops, and sports centers. You’ll find some of them among the areas left behind in England, Wales, and Scotland. Authorities have to do something about these 10 poorest places in the UK.
10. Newport, Wales
We’re starting in Wales. One of the poorest places in the UK is a city and county borough in Gwent in Wales. We are referring to Newport which is situated on the River Usk close to the river’s confluence with the Severn Estuary. It is 19 kilometers northeast of Cardiff. Newport’s population of 145,700 at the 2011 census notwithstanding, all is not going on fine with the city. It can’t get past its nagging poverty.
Imagine this: of Newport’s 95 neighborhoods in Newport, 23 currently rank among the most deprived in Wales. Do the math, and you will find out that this is about 24 percent of the authority. That’s the biggest percentage of deprivation in the country.
9. Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland
Wales doesn’t have a monopoly on poor places. Scotland has, at least, one of the 10 poorest places in the UK. You’ll find the ninth on our list in Inverclyde. This is Greenock, a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area. The town with a population of 44,248 is located in the west-central Lowlands of Scotland.
As proof of how gripping the poverty state of this town is, its population reduced by almost 3,000 within 10 years. In a report that shows how poor some parts of the nations are, Greenock tops the list. In the Scottish Index of Multiple Deprivation for 2020, Greenock has the highest number of deprived areas in Scotland.
8. Halton, England
England too has some of the poorest places in the UK and the first of these on this list is the eighth poorest place in the UK, Halton. The district and unitary authority that registers its name on this list has a borough status in Cheshire.
When you consider its ranking as one of the worst areas in England and Wales by a global children's charity that also ranks Halton as one of the worst areas in England and Wales to be a girl, you will understand why Halton slipped into the rank of the 20 most deprived areas in England. Other indices like life expectancy, children poverty which is 25 percent, health inequality, and unemployment rates are not in a positive light for this district.
7. Merthyr Tydfil, Wales
We’re back in Wales to find Merthyr Tydfil, the main town in Merthyr Tydfil County Borough, as the seventh of the 10 poorest places in the UK. The town administered by Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council is about 37 kilometers north of Cardiff. Often called Merthyr, the town believed to be named after Tydfil, daughter of King Brychan of Brycheiniog, has a population of 43,820.
This town seems to be hitting above its weight as the go-to place for those looking for gloomy job news. As of March 2018, the unemployment rate was 5.7 percent. Even though it's an iron producer, poor transportation service is the bane of this town that makes it so poor.
6. South Elmsall, England
South Elmsall is a small town and a civil parish lying to the east of Hemsworth with a population of 6,519. When it comes to safety, this town is among the most dangerous of small towns, villages, and cities in West Yorkshire. It’s faring badly in income deprivation, employment deprivation, education, skills and training deprivation, health deprivation, and disability. The 2021 overall crime rate in South Elmsall was 111 crimes per 1,000 people Living in this small town, you will be on a downward spiral of ill health and at the risk of premature death or the impairment of quality of life caused by poor physical or mental health.

I can see Jaywick was a nice break away from London back in the day, but when times get hard, the usual thing to do, is sell the holiday home to keep you're main home. Moving from bricks n mortar to a place not supposed to be for full time living is a false economy, especially when there are very few jobs nearby. Now those few jobs can only be found even further away.
It's not just this selection, the whole of the UK is in terminal decline.

Alas life is not fair so we have rich people who never have to worry about a thing, middle class who can afford to live and then the lower classes, who (most of them) have mental health issues or have been let down by parents, schooling, the government etc etc and have fallen into bad situations which are almost impossible to get out of. In truth, the real enemy is the casino-capitalisation of the West, which put me out of a job, and destroyed the communities near me, and has created haves and have nots all around the globe. And the haves are becoming monstrously powerful and rich, and laughing at the rest of us, or could not give two hoots, so long as they are alright. It became much, much worse after Thatcher, who handed the rich our infrastructures and silverware, so hard to see a way back now. I always said it would lead to WW3 between East and West, then anarchy would break out in the West too. I still think that this is how it all ends. Will we ever have a good society? I go there on a regular basis and have family living there. To lump GY as one whole deprived area is absolute nonsense. I was there 2 weeks ago, spent a whole week in a campsite near the front, and had an absolute wonderful time, walked around the different areas with much fascinating history, visited a couple of museums and galleries, ate in several decent eateries, rowed on the boating lake, had top quality coffee sitting enjoying the restored Venetian Gardens. The working age members of my family there are in work from ordinary jobs to high level ones. Some relatives receive great GP and hospital services. One problem is for them to get hold of decent trades people to do work, but as for everything else made out as an almost over whelming negative, basically it’s cods wallop. Yes there are issues, a high level of benefits claimed, obvious people with addiction issues, a cross section of “interesting” examples of the human race, but overall I would have no issues living there.

There is. This is my argument when they go on about how poor people are in the UK. We have a very very generous benefits system over here, so generous in fact that my single parent sister who worked 15hrs a week in a shop could afford botox, fillers, had a clothing allowance of £400pm & £100pw for socialising. This was after her mortgage & bill payments plus her dental care & prescriptions were free. I’ve been to America, & I’ve seen the poverty. I couldn’t believe that in a country so wealthy people were living in conditions akin to being in a 3rd world country. However with the cost of living currently it’s those NOT on benefits who are suffering. Those on benefits get taken care of generally.
@joolsn5823

I call BS! There is no such 'clothing allowance' or similar paid to anyone under the UK welfare benefits system. Mortgages are not paid, bills (ultilities, fuel etc) are also not paid for claimants. Bills must be met by the claimant from their welfare allowance from the DWP. Rent and healthcare are (mostly) covered for some claimants. I was a benefits advisor for a charity. Our benefits system is not 'very, very' generous but it is civilised for the most part and avoids people having to literally beg in the street for food. Many European countries have similar or more generous systems. Either your single parent sister had another (very intimate?) source of extra income or you are just talking utter bollocks!

Honest journalism.
Im surprised Birkenhead wasn't on here considering all big companies have moved elsewhere and the small businesses barley stay open for a month before shutting down and moving elsewhere. The streets are full of drug addicts, homeless, litter and more. While everyone else is living in a rented house with kids on the brink of being kicked out and also earning very little benefit money for food and bills. Most of the houses have been bordered up and sometimes used as a drug house too. There can be some nice spots but once you drive even just 5 mins out you back in the craphole Birkenhead is known to be.

Exactly. About 95% of the UK is in poverty and deprivation. From Scotland to York to parts of London.
Blackpool, Haverhill, Gravesend, Workington, Wolverhampton some parts?, Wrexham, Rhyl, the list is endless. I've been living in the UK for 17 years, all over the country, I visited many places. Thanks for your comment. One question, Where would you go if you were to die today? Seek the Lord and saviour Jesus Christ before it's too late. John 3:16 “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” Hell is real and Heaven is also real. You don't want to spend an eternity in Hell torment without God. The only way to escape Hell is to follow Jesus Christ our Lord and saviour. Study the KJV Bible to know more and pray and seek until you find Jesus. Don't delay tomorrow might be too late. You are not promised even the next minute. Do it now

In the thumb nail of this video, they showed a place and I realised it was Jaywick. Many years ago an Uncle died who had lived in Jaywick for a few years. My husband and I went to the funeral, and we were shocked at the place (we were living in Devon at the time). It was so run down and shabby in general. So many homes there which have been cobbled together which bits and pieces. No planning permissions required. Some started out as holiday chalets and people just started building on to them to make them bigger and it seems the council didn't care at all. A lot of them were falling apart. We had to stay in the area overnight and honestly there was not one decent B&B or hotel to be had. It was just awful. We counted ourselves lucky to be living in Devon; we were in fact Londoners who had moved out of London in the 80s.

@@JK-cf4rz yeah Cumbernauld is atrocious now. And Motherwell. I grew up in East Kilbride and back then it was amazing. Such a quiet place with a town that had everything you ever needed. I still love Glasgow and I always will. I honestly can’t believe Falkirk isn’t on it 😂 it has for to be one of the most shittest areas in central Scotland! I’ve not been to Edinburgh for a long time. You would think as it’s the capital they would consistently keep it revamped.
I grew up in South Elmsall. No longer live there, my dad managed to break the norm for the town and got a good job and we moved to one of the villages next to Pontefract. Elmsall is a shithole, but I really miss it, and I love going back to see my primary school mates and feeling like I'm 8 again walking through the town centre 12 years later.
many towns in the UK are dying. there are islands of wealth like the cotswolds here and there where village life may be clinging on with a bit more vibrancy, but generally with an aging population, the closure of community services and migration of infrastructure and industry to big cities, the modern british economy is sucking the lifeblood out of all of these places. in a few generations there may be nothing left in the countryside but housing and supermarkets; as a consequence more people than ever are suffering with mental illness and addiction to hard drugs, which generates further crises of homelessness, poor health, and generational neglect/abuse. our environment has changed beyond recognition in 100 years and I think we're really struggling to cope with it.
Shame the unrelated photos don’t match the inane commentary.
